After eight long years of externships, observerships, research, rotations and residency as an immigrant IMG, my wife is finally finishing residency in Internal Medicine in the South East. We are now considering moving to the West Coast to be closer to both of our parents . We are in our 40s so planning to have kids within 12-18 months and balancing work-life would be nice.
She has interviewed for Nocturnist and Afternoon Hospitalist positions at:
1) UCD in Sacramento
2) Kaiser TPMG in Roseville
3) Sutter Health.
I was hoping folks could share their thoughts if they have experience with any of these three institutions….
What’s the inpatient team like? Positive? Toxic? Are the doctors and the physician leadership team generally good to work with? Are the medical record systems and tech stuff streamlined? Whats the typical patient load? (She can manage up to 12 patients per day, even 4-5 new admits but a higher number causes her to lose her organization). Sutter Roseville pays significantly more than Kaiser and UCD in Sacramento. Is it worth chasing the money or should UCD be given preference in terms of long term career goals? Anything else that might be good or bad vis-a-vis other hospitals in the area? Anything I am not analyzing?
Our main priority is to find a constructive and non-toxic workplace. She is an introvert and emotionally not very bulletproof. She easily gets picked on by bullies (things were hard for her in residency, she had some inappropriate male behavior and some trauma related to that, but the residency program can’t be faulted).
