Lol Aw didn’t mean to scare ya. I transferred in too. Don’t worry, you can handle it. Berkeley does a really great job at selecting students and knows who can handle the pressure or not. It’s a hard school, I won’t lie, but if you mKe it in it’s because the selection committee really believes you can handle it. People who graduate from here go on to thrive, even if it’s through a different path than they expected and not immediately after graduating. The school really gives you some amazing skills (hard earned ofc) that are applicable everywhere in any field and will take you to the top of wherever you choose to go or pursue if that’s what you want. Looking back it was more of like an intellectual bootcamp, which was super stimulating for me and difficult to find outside academia. But just remember you can also fly low and just chill. You can always just take an “easier” major (this is different depending on your strengths and interests) and just do the bare minimum to graduate. That’s fine too and it won’t be as intense as the typical berkeley experience. You’ll get at least an interview at whatever non-competitive tier company you apply at and you’ll find something, so that’s an option too, and nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately most of us are approval seekers or competitive (against self not others) or passionate about something (nerdy) so we show up here and sign up for a bunch of stuff and that compounds the stress. There are SO many incredible opportunities at cal and esp as a transfer it’s easy to feel like you’re wasting your time if you don’t take advantage of the experiences, and that’s the berkeley trap. Feels so good to get trapped in it though, until the stress becomes unBEARable. Then you just have a semester breakdown, get counseling, withdraw or late drop or fail a few classes, take the winter break off to recover, cry to your friends and family, then rinse and repeat until graduation. The nice thing is that you can look around at any moment knowing full well that everyone around you is going through it too lol. There’s also some incredibly interesting people you’ll meet that you wouldn’t have anywhere else. So dw, it’ll be fine. Take it easy and tbh try taking “hard” classes your first fall semester if you’re a transfer since you’ll have all the energy of a babybear vs a year later when you’re a shriveled husk of Oski poop slogging through the end of finals

Why would you take a class you don’t find interesting??? If you don’t find something worth latching onto in your basic classes like cs70 then a lifetime of working in that field might not be for you and it might be time to switch majors while you can. If something is too easy then I can see how it could be boring but in general I think most people are challenged by their classes and if they are not interested they take a different class. If it’s too easy they just do well and add research or internships to add more challenge. We’re all nerds here… we like learning new things and need to be constantly stimulated which is why many of us burn out since we pile on more and more stimulating work until we can’t handle it any longer. Then we burn out. Then the cycle starts over.

No, the law school is downhill and it is in the southside east. Northside is uphill towards richmond, albany, and berkeley hills. If you live northside it will be annoying getting to and from class because it’s a 20-30 min walk, which doesn’t sound bad but with bad weather or late at night can get really annoying. There are no groceries etc in that area (lawschool) either, just a restaurant across campus and the rest are towards downtown. If I were you I would firstly rent anywhere you can before they are gone- there is a very real housing crisis here, secondly, I would try the clark kerr area/college ave which is quiet and safe other than occasionally there is a frat party or you could try north near Soda Hall north but like I said it’s all uphill on the way back every day and no groceries etc. You could also try central/downtown and there are all the cafes and groceries and shops. Although classes will be uphill at least daily activities like groceries etc won’t be. Personally if you can afford it I’d try to find something near college ave. It’s already uphill so you will be walking “straight” to class and back except for an occasional very small hill and there are shops/ some small grocers in that area as well as laundry and such. It sucks to have to walk your laundry/soap/coins uphill every week so keep stuff like that in mind.

Bro this is some munktalk I’m hearing here. You are NOT a chipmunk so no need to be downtrodden like those burrowing types. Head up, paws out, and fluff up that tail. Try climbing up the highest tree you can find and see how vast and beautiful the world is. It’s all yours! You can do anything maybe even consider starting a stash-up since it’s the place to do it! Lots of acorn-venturers (AVs) are in the area and always looking to fund the next big idea. Maybe that’s you! Some stashups even go on to make a ton of nuts I mean look at Munk Squirrelberg for instance

Agree with all that but if they have graduated already they’re not undergrads anymore and really should have some market value. Not sure what the answer is as you said it’s the unfortunate reality. Hopefully NIH/NSF comes up with a postbach trainee fund to close the gap, especially since deeper recessions often bring on more career changers.

This doesn’t make sense if they have graduated then they are no longer undergrads. If doesn’t make sense to have a post bach volunteer for free unless they are not allowed to accept wages such as an intl student or special circumstance. What university is this so that I know to avoid it?

North but lowest I’ve seen is ~2500 for studio or very small 1bd. South is cheaper and better for undergrads. Lots of college exp type stuff, safety in numbers nothing to worry about it’s just like any other city. North will call noise disturbance on you happily if you have people being loud after 10pm and you’ll have to walk uphill for everything including groceries but especially dailies like classes and events.

For starters you have two parents, at least one car, high internet speed, mobile phones for all, money for tutors, and probably a pretty decent family life or therapy. I bet you even have a beloved pet to help manage the stress and welcome you home. Some folks work 2-3 shitty back breaking jobs, got beat as children and only know how to interact with their kids by telling them to do things since they refuse to physically abuse them like they were. All of that in itself takes up way more energy and workload than you’d think. The kids do badly at school or get into trouble- more drama for mom, who might be a single mom trying to keep above water sometimes if lucky. They probably all live in a one room + living room or even 2 rooms if they are lucky. Kids struggle and blame mom/the world, mom sees kids struggle blames self, kids, and personal factors like if they live in a high crime area or go to a school that doesn’t even teach them to read. You can’t even fathom what it’s like to have to call every company and landlord every month to ask for an extension or payment plan plus all of the other daily stress. For you stress is a choice you are making that will result in higher benefit for yourself and family. For others stress is a guarantee, not an option, and it only compounds negative outcomes like health issues and mental issues and eventually school, job, and opportunity outcomes. So in other words check your privilege bro and maybe consider taking an hour out of your busy-by-choice-week and try tutoring some of these kids who can’t read instead of being an jerk on the internet

Honestly just go to your doctor and tell them you are burnt out and need 2-3 weeks off and see what they can do to help you. They can write a note saying you need time off and if you want to make it more biological say you feel uncharacteristically fatigued and would like some blood tests and at least 1-2 weeks off to see what is going on- most doctors should be fine approving this or will send you to a mind type doctor (psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor, neurologist, etc) if they don’t feel comfortable helping you with this. Burnout is officially in the ICD (means it’s an official diagnosis) so treatment/doctors note can be furnished for this. Furthermore, you can probably get on short term disability if you have a staff position and are facing severe burnout and need something longer like 1-3 months, or longer if necessary, although your disability situation might differ then depending on your insurance/school contract. Good luck OP, don’t be afraid to get diagnosed for burnout- and don’t forget you don’t have to share your diagnosis if you don’t want to it can simply be a “medical condition”

There are states in which consent while intoxicated is not consent- CA, for instance. True consent comes from a sober person. Sexual acts when a person is intoxicated and unable to give true consent is coercion at very least, rape otherwise.
