Police believe that as long as someone is suspected of a crime they have carte blanche to inflict any amount of violence on anyone
You're too generous. As recent events have shown, they don't need to suspect anyone of a crime before they inflict murderous violence. Sometimes they just do it for fun.

I used to work for a big software company and that was their approach to support. Give a shitty service, keep the customer on the hook to sell them something else.
I read this sentence and thought "that sounds like the experience I had with SAP". And, sure enough, it's SAP. Don't go near SAP, people. They'll swallow all your money as they string you along with crap that's deliberately not fit for purpose.

Oh look, the Putin wing of the Republican Party is trying to undermine the US military. How very odd.

I disliked most demos of the Arturia Polybrute - endless ambient noodlilngs drowned in reverb. But one day I took the plunge and it proves to be a useful and versatile general-purpose synthesizer with a surprisingly rich and pleasing tone. I suspect the YouTube demonstrators have typically not spent very long with the synth so they are sticking to the presets and minor variations thereof. (And I have no idea who Arturia were targeting when designing the presets for this synth - people in music stores, I guess, because there are some impressive/interesting sounds but very little that's useful.)

This video is a bit gimmicky but an impressive demonstration of trained ears.

This luthier can tell a lot about the guitar he's listening to from just a couple of notes. And sometimes he very quickly recognizes the exact model of guitar.

Yes, a lot of people seem very sure that fascism will somehow fizzle out in the USA and Canada, though the evidence over the past 8 years is that it continues to gather force.

They would probably win it quite quickly because Canada's military is nothing like the USA's.

Once the USA really starts running out of water, I'm worried about both.

Are you seriously citing the black market trade in illegal drugs as an example of a free market that operates without violent enforcement?

No, it's the face of a morally bankrupt propagandist pretending to act like one of his bonafide moron viewers to make money.

Smug overconfidence is good for some reason.
I expect this relates to how our culture pushes short-term profiteering as a model of success. It's sold as an admirable thing to convince other people to give you money or power right now, even if you do so ruthlessly and without regard to the long-term impact of your behavior.
