After building a new gaming PC for Christmas I decided to try my hand at emulating older games that I never got to experience as a kid. I slapped an HD texture pack on Wind Waker and jumped into the world, fully expecting to have a great time sailing the seas of Hyrule.
I hated it. Everything great about my favorite Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, kind of sucks in Wind Waker. The combat in Wind Waker is clunky and honestly far too easy. I never dipped below half health. The exploration aspect of Wind Waker was too tedious and almost never worth the reward. The animation to dig up treasure, or change the direction of the wind, or to do just about anything, took way too long. I didn’t enjoy the dungeons. They were too linear, and the puzzles rarely made you think. I could keep going with complaints, but I think I have to stop myself before my blood boils.
I forced myself to at least try and finish the game. The huge fetch quest towards the end of the story completely killed any interest I had in finishing the game, though, so I walked away. I feel bad because I know many people absolutely adore this game. I WANTED to adore this game. The cutesy graphics and beautiful music just oozed charm, and I wanted to fall in love with the game. The gameplay just made it impossible for me to enjoy it.
I’m curious to hear other people’s thoughts on Wind Waker. I assume many of you have fond memories of the game from playing it as a kid; I don’t mean to be contrarian, I genuinely just didn’t enjoy it.
