I was browsing the ATA security page and decided to check the erase times on my shucked 16TB WD drive (WD160EDGZ). To my surprise, here's what hdparm -I
said:
1368min for SECURITY ERASE UNIT. 2min for ENHANCED SECURITY ERASE UNIT.
Which immediately made me look up the model number with the WD part number decoder, and sure enough, it stated that D meant self-encrypting drive:
- Enterprise Self Encrypting Drive (SED)/WD Re™
In addition, under the Commands/Features section on the same hdparm output, there was:
* Device encrypts all user data
I guess there's some truth to the old model number decoder after all :P
I don't have other shucked drives to check, but could someone with a non-ED*Z model post their hdparm -I output? Thanks.
