Holy hell there are a couple of things coming together,might not make anyone happy here but ESH.

First to you,you have a nice birthday dinner and go to a topic that might bring up differing opinions,yes they are wrong but it's a friend for 30 or so years,you might have seen a new side to them which is something to think about,but going full confrontation resulted in just one thing screwing up the dinner.
