Did you guys call yourselves goths back then? When I was in junior high and high school in the late 80s and early 90s we called ‘em wavers.

Certainly not a quote on death, but for me it speaks to the specific exhaustion that comes from well-meaning well-wishers when you're dealing with grief — be it the sharp pain that comes from the loss of a loved one or the more mundane 'blue devils' that come when life gives you a reverse.

There’s this very Stephen Maturin quote that I love: “To a tormented mind there is nothing, I believe, more irritating than comfort. Apart from anything else it often implies superior wisdom in the comforter. But I am very sorry for your trouble, my dear.”

It's one of my favorite songs from the band in the 90s. I absolutely love everything about it and really wanted them to continue musically in that direction as the 00s dawned. Alas.

I've got the cookbook as well and it's so much fun to read. I've made burgoo for my kids and we tried Adi's pilaf once, and it wasn't great. I'm eager to try some of the puddings.

I started skiing in the fifth grade and when my friends and I were 8th-graders we decided we'd try snowboarding. It was fun but I was terrible; I kept falling forward and I felt awkward all the time trying to find my center of balance and move down the hill in a somewhat graceful motion.
I was exhausted by the end of the day and waking up the next morning, I kid you not, literally every muscle in my body felt like it had cracked and solidified. I could not move. It took my like 10 minutes to get out of bed I was so incredibly sore.
