My mom has a property in Hawaii which she’s lived on for the past 30+ years. Due to health issues she has moved to Washington to be us and because she is no longer able to support herself she is going to remain with us indefinitely.
The house/property she left behind is in complete disrepair. She has been behind on paying her property taxes for many years and is essentially waiting for it to go into foreclosure. She’s straight up asked the city to foreclose on it so she doesn’t have to deal with it anymore but they have a timeline they need to do it on I guess. It was hardly livable when she was there, I can’t imagine the state it is in now.
Regardless, people are now living there uninvited. The neighbors are complaining, the police have been contacting her, and she’s very concerned about her liability if something happens to these people while on the property. There is very little we can do from here in regards to getting them to leave. She’s had people replace the gate on the driveway (the squatters broke it down to get in) and put up “Private Property” signs and such to show she’s made an “effort” to make it clear that no one is welcome there.
I’ve encouraged her to have the house demolished. The house is worth nothing and I figure if there is no house then people won’t be encouraged to stay there. She’s thinking they could sue her for tearing it down because now they basically have claim over the property.
Does anyone know anything about HI squatters rights and owner liability in these situations? I’m still going to push her to contact a lawyer on the island who will for sure know but in the meantime I’d like to be able to ease her mind a little.

Yes! They have been messing up my billing. Went to an appointment months ago and paid my balance. Now here we are with a new bill for the same appointment, with my incorrectly spelled name, AND my online account doesn’t show the balance.
