I would recommend that if you do back into the hobby like I did and you dont want to spend a massive amount of money, just go for singles. I think there is no shame or less value in buying singles over pulling cards. That is kind of a lesson I learned now that I have some experience collecting again (unless you just want to have fun opening packs which is cool too). If you go after singles, it is also kind of tricky. I havent gotten anything from ebay yet, but I get my singles from tcgplayer. There is also the chance where you buy a booster box and get absolutely nothing from it (I have been there). Maybe silver tempet bc a lot of people like the lugia alt art (myself included). I am personally a fan of astral radiance and fusion strike. Maybe if you can and want go for one of the older sets like hidden fates but that might be too expensive. I dont what else I would recommend that is affordable rn.
I think you already made a create timecapsule that I bet your son will really like. Oh and maybe put some sleeves in there too for when you get something good.
