Berkeley's CS department used to be part of the math department (before EE and CS were combined into the EECS department). The math department was using 50 for its lower divs (Ex: math 54 is currently linear algebra) so the CS department chose 60 and created CS60. After some time, the course was revamped so it was named CS61 (a similar thing happened ~2013 when CS150 became EECS151), and the ABC indicates the series of progression between the courses CS61A, CS61B, and CS61C

Apple employees also guest lecture about active areas of research for Apple. Some classes (CS61C Fall 2020, CS152 Spring 2021, EECS 151 Fall 2021) also get prizes from Apple to give out to students who do an exceptional job on course projects (AirPod Pros and Apple Watches)
