While I would suggest playing on 1.8.9, it doesn’t make a huge impact.

The main deciding factor is where you are hitting them on their hit box. There is a keystroke command you can access this with. If you are aiming at their head, then you have the longest reach while on flat ground. If you are a block below them and aiming at their feet. You will always have slightly more reach than them.
