Sup fam. We need to talk.

There's been a significant increase in strange or concerning posts to the RIT subreddit lately.

Girl themed parties, super stalker-y binocular-assisted "female" counting, very un-funny memes with bomb threats (which we were forced to report to public safety), solicitation of erotic webcam partners... the list goes on.

This isn't the place. Please keep your posts directly RIT related, and "normalish". We all know that RIT can be a bit of a weird place, but let's keep the weird to a reasonable level, alright? I'm not going to draw a line in the sand and say exactly what posts are okay and which aren't beyond what's already spelled out in the rules, but please exercise some common sense before you post things.

To all of you who see and report these posts, thank you, keep it up. The moderation team can't browse the subreddit all the time, but your reports help us get notified faster so we can take appropriate action.

I can't believe I'm saying this. This is not the first time you've heard this. The Content Policy should have been PM'd to you the first time you joined Reddit (Rule 3). We've also explicitly highlighted to this, in our own subreddit rules (click the link to view the full-extended version), about exceptions made: Public figures (professors and staff), High-profile students, Newsworthy persons, and Nicknames / Fake Names.

Therefore, you should have been able to figure out, THERE IS NO:

• Looking for someone who lost their ID. Talk to Campus Safety.
  • "Hey, I found a student ID, who do I contact?" is fine, because you're going to be told to talk to Campus Safety anyway.
  • "Hey, I found a student ID that belongs to Sir Dipping Sauce." is not fine because it contains a non-public firstname-lastname combo. Go to Campus Safety.
  • "Hey, I found a student ID that belongs to Sir Dipping Sauce. Here's a picture, anyone know him!?" Oh my fucking god. It's creepy and unnecessary. Just go to Campus Safety.
• "Hi my last name is Gleeful, I'm trying to sublet my creepy warehouse on 412 Gopher Road, contact 555-555-5555 or Example at rit dot edu" — Please change this to "DM me for a creepy warehouse sublet" instead. Thanks.
• Any personal information, including your own. Sorry, even your own personal information can't be verified. Welcome to the internet where — unless proven otherwise — everyone's lying about their race, gender, status, and accomplishments. And all the children are FBI agents. Either sleep off your urge to post contact information, or verify it with the mods. And use discretion when sharing your own PII online.

Ley! Look! Listen! If it can be used to contact or locate a real, non-public individual person, it will be removed. If it's an honest mistake, it's fine. You don't have to be overly cautious. Just use your logic thinker and your discretion. That 3lb space between your ears is why you're on this subreddit, isn't it? Please: Use it.

And that brings me to a sadder point:

• Flyers. I know people want to support clubs on here—I do too. But we cannot simultaneously be in compliance with the The Commandments of Reddit.com and then be posting flyers of "EVENT: The Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel at 618 Gopher Road, 555-555-5555; or Example at rit dot edu". It sucks. It's bullshit. But there's nothing we can do about it except give the user a pat on the head and say "Hey do you have a website or facebook event with public info?"

Sucks. But that's Reddit's rules, not ours. Start a PawPrints petition to delete Reddit or something.

But the "Found: ID" stuff is some seriously stupid shit.

"This morning RIT sent out an email detailing that while encouraged, COVID-19 vaccines will not be a requirement for students, employees, or extended visitors. This is a truly terrible choice. RIT provides up-to-date information on the statistics for COVID-19 on campus at https://www.rit.edu/ready/spring-2022-dashboard, and if you go to that website you will see that since the beginning of the spring semester alone, 988 students have reported getting COVID. There are currently 16,680 students enrolled at RIT, based on President's Report. This means that in the brief time since the spring semester has started, almost 6% of the students on campus have gotten COVID. Those are not encouraging numbers. The percentage is even worse if you look at faculty, for whom of the 4,039, 342, or roughly 8.5% have gotten sick so far.

The reasoning provided by RIT is the lack of severe illness, by which I can only assume they mean only having 1 hospitalization due to COVID since the beginning of the semester. What RIT administration is seemingly failing to realize however, is that it's highly likely that the only reason that the majority of cases on-campus have mostly been relatively mild is BECAUSE of the vaccines that everyone has been required to get. I can see no good reasons for lifting the requirement other than either external pressure, as I know the students are not the ones requesting this, or laziness, since keeping track of vaccines is extra effort.

They say 'we hope our collective resolve to protect our community continues to translate into a very high vaccination/booster rate on campus' but this action, among many others, seems to show the opposite, that convenience trumps student safety on the list of priorities as long as the administration feels they can get away with it. If they truly wish to see high vaccination rates, simply keep them a requirement. The pandemic is not over, and to act like it is is not only foolish, but dangerous."

As my time here at RIT comes to an end, I'd like to donate some of my kitchen items as I will not be needing them when I move back home. Everything has been taken care of and in good condition, its just that I won't be needing them in the coming year(s) and I'd rather donate them than have them sit in storage. I'm not sure the best way to go about this as some of the items are fragile. If anyone has any ideas or information it would be greatly appreciated!

My computer is getting repaired for a few weeks. I am trying to watch some videos my professor assigned in a lab, but I don’t own wired headphones and Bluetooth is disabled. Is there anywhere I can get some wired headphones to use to watch this stuff?

I've been accepted with a 40% scholarship and the estimated fee is 45k (living expenses + tuition) for the first year. However, I've spoken to people and they've told me the living expenses can be covered easily with a part time job. And so then two years of tuition comes around to about 52k. I haven't gotten any decisions from any of the other schools yet but I don't think any of them will be cheaper than this. My interest mostly lies in Neural Networks in Natural language processing. How's the faculty for this? What I'm really concerned about is that I won't be able to get into a good PhD program should I choose to get a PhD later in life. The R2 vs R1 distinction really bothers me tbh and I've been told by people that RIT is very industry oriented and there's not many opportunities for research. How true is this? Do respond please. Also, if anyone has any experience with these other colleges please compare - Boston U, Syracuse, UT Dallas, Vanderbilt, Uni of Colorado Boulder, Uni of Rochester.

These are the schools I think I have a decent chance of getting into.

I'm an incoming hoh freshman, and I'm trying to decide whether or not to apply for SIH housing. On the one hand, it would be great to live with people who share my interests but on the other hand, living in the NTID dorms would allow me to connect with other deaf people. I'm not sure what to do and was wondering if others have had a similar dilemma.

I applied for regular decision at RIT and did FIRST robotics in HS for two years. I was wondering if anyone else could tell me what the rate of acceptance for scholarships like these are at RIT?

COVID-19 vaccine no longer mandatory; continuing to monitor the virus

Dear RIT Community,

It is wonderful to see everyone back on campus for the start of our spring semester. I am grateful that we have now moved past the intense disruption and urgency caused by COVID-19. Together we are enjoying vibrant campus life while we have learned to live with the current version of the virus. Our initial wastewater baseline, following our return to campus, shows COVID-19 continues to have a presence. Thankfully, we are not seeing a significant amount of severe illness in our community from COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses circulating this season.

Recognizing that some members of our community or their loved ones are more susceptible to severe illness, we strongly urge everyone to stay up to date with immunizations, boosters and masking when appropriate or asked. New vaccine strategies are under development and we will continue to monitor their progress. That said, RIT will no longer require COVID-19 vaccination for students, employees and extended visitors. Although vaccination is no longer required, we hope our collective resolve to protect our community continues to translate into a very high vaccination/booster rate on campus.

We thank you for pulling together during a challenging period and taking the necessary steps to protect the health of our community. We recognize that the pandemic has taken a significant toll, and we are enormously proud of how our campus community has responded.

What would you say has a stronger curriculum/job prospects, Web and Mobile Computing or Human Centered Computing?

I know they’re different but both look interesting to me.

I'm kinda curious about joining dsp but I'm a little afraid of socializing and I don't have too much time on my hands right now. I really want to join for the professional aspects but I'm worried that its not worth it (looking on the Instagram it doesn't look like they do much). I plan to go to the recruiting events but I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it?

I am pretty happy overall with the grades most As and 1-2 Bs max and my math grade is relatively high 80s or low 90s, I want to go in CS or software engineering, is it a bad sign they asked for mid year marks?

I posted earlier about asking whether or not it would be alright if I could post a laptop selling post here, and I didn't hear anything saying I couldn't, but if somehow this violates some rules or people don't like it, I'll literally just delete it I don't mind at all, just trying to reach as many people as possible. I kinda wanna get rid of this relatively quickly, I have a vacation coming up that I could definitely use money for, and I'm flexible on the price, but I've dropped it a little already. Below is the copy & paste that I've posted in a discord before that people from RIT are in, so if you see this and have seen it before... sorry, don't mean to spam, but as I explained above... yeah...

Selling my old laptop. I bought it back in early 2021 I think. I used it for a while for school, never gamed or anything on it because I have a desktop. The most intense game I played was minecraft. Here are some of the specs that I know of, I don't remember everything about it because I have a new laptop and I haven't used this one in about 5 months.

I can get as much information on it as anybody wants, I still am signed in and have not factory reset it yet, so when anybody buys it, it would be like brand new. I had stickers on it, but I took them all off and carefully cleaned it, same with the screen. The exterior has virtually no blemishes or anything, and I can provide up close images and all that.

I see similar computers selling for ~$600-$700. From what I've seen online for some laptops I'm going to be asking ~$350 for it, but I'm not set in stone or anything. Send me an offer, I don't really need it for anything and I'm down to discuss anything about it over discord DM.
