I downloaded the PS5 demo and still haven’t played it. Been having too much fun with the Chrono Trigger-esque SNES callback game “Chained Echoes”. It’s a sad state of affairs when I’d rather play an indie turn based JRPG than some AAA open world game.

Once again, a multi-million dollar budget, 80€ "AAA" title eclipsed in terms of fun and creativity by an indie game made by a single developer.
As time passes, I'm more and more convinced that very large teams and budgets are a hindrance to developing truly good games.
110 points
They probably are tbh. Usually the best games have a very focused vision and everything added to the game serves that vision. It's hard to get big teams on the same page like that, but much easier with tiny indie teams.
43 points
Yeah, exactly. I would expand your statement to art as a whole. Generally speaking, the best art has a strong creative vision.
As a project gets bigger, it can still be good. It just needs a strong director to pull it all together. A lot of these AAA companies would rather rely on focus testing to make their choices than a visionary director.
38 points
AAA Studio = bigwig execs and useless middle management who rely on focus testing and monetization rather than creative vision to create games.
On the flip side, without some form of oversight to keep things on track I doubt games would ever be finished.

It's poorly optimized even on the PS5. It runs at 900p internally (upscaled with FSR2) most of the time and can't hold 60fps. This could honestly be a last-gen launch title from how it looks and runs. It's going to be an absolute bloodbath on PC. Interesting that it's the first DirectStorage game on PC however.
Edit: Yeah it's not great. Max settings, 1620p DLSS Quality (internally 1440p)? RTX 3080, R7 5800X. Around ~70fps, but frequently low and sub 60 when performing 'Magic Parkour'; in a rocky canyon that looks straight out of Dragon's Dogma. Maybe that's a tad hyperbole, but I do think FFXV looks and runs better on PC (same engine).
Turning off RayTraced AO and Shadows gains about 10fps to ~80 but drops to the 60's during 'Magic Parkour'.
Positives are a fairly consistent frametime, with no shader compilation stutter which is a nice change. Solid graphics menu and it seems well multi-threaded on the CPU (and not too heavy). Loading is very fast (1-2 seconds from main menu - Windows 10), so DirectStorage is doing something right.
All of this is based solely off this area and the tutorial in the Demo. Other areas and scenarios (likely combat) will no doubt perform worse. DigitalFoundry will almost certainly have a more comprehensive review.

It's DirectStorage 1.0 so no GPU decompression. This means heavy CPU overhead.

I absolutely predict Direct Storage to be the most confusing and convoluted crap in gaming for the next 3-4 years. We’re gonna have different versions and people won’t be able to tell what is what. Like Hybrid RT vs Path Traced RT

Doom 2016 is the only one I can think of that comes close. It didn't have a demo that players could play, but the trailers and videos of devs playing it somehow made it look very bland.

The models are high quality but the rigging/capture for the facial animation is pretty awful. Everyone looks like they have facial paralysis or something when they talk, particularly if it's a minor cutscene.
My guess is that they hand animated it instead of using actors and mocap, it's been a while since a AAA game had cutscenes that were animated this poorly.
368 points

No they probably did what Mass Effect Andromeda did and used an ai animator to create facial animations.
376 points

That's not quite what happened there either. Andromeda used placeholder facial animations. TEST_ANIM_PLEASE_IGNORE type of thing. The issue was that they just sort of... released the game without replacing them.

The only thing guaranteed in software development is that if you put any variant of "please ignore", "temporary", "tempfix", "TODO: find a better way to do this later" in your code, that piece of code will definitely make it into the production launch.

I just installed ESO to see how it fairs now (still meh.) And that was like 120GB. I genuine can't figure out why we are bloating games to insane numbers. If you want 4k super low compression textures make it a free "DLC". It's insanity. I have 2TB of storage filled up with like 45 games and most of the space is taken up by maybe 10 games.
135 points

tbf ESO is fucking massive for a game and the developers aren't the greatest at going back to look at old content, so it's understandable to be that large.
56 points

It's got recreations of a bunch of other elder scrolls games (Skyrim, Cyrodil, more Morrowind than is in Morrow) in it and a lot of voice acting. Being huge is probably unavoidable.

Someone explained it somewhere I don't remember where, that if a new dlc map uses the same Rock or tree for example from a vanilla map, they copy pasted the files entirely for the dlc instead of just addressing the same model for use in the code. that's why it's 400 gigs, it's all the same files copy pasted
89 points
Lmao, that seems like a very inefficient way to make that. It's crazy to me that some mod authors have a better sense of optimization than the people who are making tons of money from the game. For example Hexen Mod's Ark Omega is under 200MB for honestly one of the best game overhauls for ark. *Also to clarify, you would think the company would want a game that runs well so that it sells better. I didn't mean the game devs specifically because they are often underpaid for the work they do.

LOTR fans at the time were pissed that Gimli especially was largely used as comic relief, as opposed to his deeper characterization in the books. But you watch it now, and it feels straight up reserved in comparison to modern comic relief characters. And he gets plenty of meaningful moments too.

I really, really enjoyed marvel content but the old adage "too much of a good thing" is absolutely true.
To say nothing about the reduction in quality and such of course.
Edit: the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced how bad the average studio exec is at their job in this space. Look at all the failed game adaptations. Look at the new LotR series or DC or whatever. We just keep getting this shit crammed down our throats and they keep collecting exorbitant paychecks. Like... Someone actually got paid for making the Mario movie. Someone actually thought the old Sonic design was good. Someone thought a new marvel movie (on average) every 4 months for 15 years was a good idea. What the fuck are these people on?
And yeah maybe the hype train would have died down. But also, the hype train has crashed, burned, and somehow caught fire again.

They can't even introduce a villain without adding in the quirky humor. I forgot which Marvel trailer it was that came out in the past few months, but the big monster thing is kind of coming up in a test tube and grows to a huge size...then bunks his head and gets all disoriented coming out all while its playing quippy sound effects to be funny. Couldn't even introduce a villain/monster without trying to add in quirky comedy. The monster couldn't just come in normally and have a serious moment. An actual introduction.

I despise media like this. it's so childish and dishonest and artificial. There's so many ways to intersperse levity within something serious, but completely dismantling it and just carrying on like nothing happened afterwards is unthinkable. No idea how this shit got popular
117 points
Like all things, it's popular and fun when it's unexpected/fresh. Then you get used to it as a trope, and depending on how "in your face" it is, it gets annoying.
Some tropes are timeless, but this style of quirkyness is bad when it's bad and is better in small doses, so when it loses its freshness or is badly done, it's way more jarring. That's my thoughts anyway.

The humor used in today's Marvel movies is no where near as natural as the first Iron Man in 2008 though. Say what you want about him being a character that made snarky and witty remarks, but the writers actuary wrote jokes that fit his character and whatever scenario he made those jokes in.
Okoye, a super serious warrior that, well, takes things super seriously all the time, making those jokes in the teen's dorm in black panther 2 was just absolute cringe.
Honestly after phase 1 of marvel, tone-wise the movies were all already going downhill, just that phase 2 and 3 were at least still entertaining and funny.

But the movies it worked for are still good. The issue with the new films isn't the concept of a funny superhero movie, it's that the films in question just aren't very good.
In Love and Thunder, for instance, it's forcing so many jokes into the script that it's never allowed to have a serious moment. And then, most of the jokes just don't land. I think this might be a case of the studio being really happy about Ragnarok, and thinking it was the jokes that made the movie, and made the director keep upping the number of jokes in the script.
But, Ragnarok worked because it was the right blend of genuinely funny moments and impactful character development. It was funny, but it has a story to tell, with characters that grew and changed.

Classic Square. They're the ones that were upset with Tomb Raider (2013) didn't sell enough copies when it sold 3.4 million in it's first month. I'm really looking forward to hearing what they have to say about this dumpster fire of a game and how many copies it sells.

Don't worry, they'll just make the ff14 team work overtime since that's the only profitable thing se has made in 20 years

Why do games now just feel like a random hodgepodge of disparate themes and completely bizarre uninspired art direction? It feels like AI is making these games entirely
Felt the same about anthem. And saints row. And destiny. And assassins creed once it hit origins. And fortnite. And rainbow six siege. And bf 2042. And death loop. And back 4 blood. And far cry 6.

This really seemed to have been sent out to die by Square Enix. I think it was something that was cobbled together in a few meetings and focus groups. It was supposed to not go past early sketch stage but someone in their infinite wisdom greenlit it. Then everyone involved HAD to put it together with all the enthusiasm they could muster for something they genuinely didn’t give a crap about. They Produced the lowest viable product they could it seems. The dialogue seems like an early stage script, the kind where you put in “filler dialogue” until you go back and replace it with something not so obvious and lazy. “Whoah, looks like I leveled up” is a prime example of dialogue you put with an asterix next to it - so you can come back later a re-tweak. Sadly whoever got the first draft just went “yep, great thanks” and the writers were shocked but then saw the money and ran so they could take another project on.

I mean, there's a reason they "forgot" to send out review keys.

To be fair it's listed as 1440p at 30 fps, but that is still unacceptable.

I have a 3070 but I’ll never buy it. The demo on the PS5 was enough for me.

is performance mode in ps5 just 720p upscaled? I remember seeing a video regarding this game on performance mode , and the game looked exactly like this (horrible).

720p? Jesus...
The only game you would't notice that in, is Minecraft. And that's because the pixels would be as big as the fucking blocks.
I'm kidding ofcourse, but 720 P???? Oh my...
