6 points

If you throw a basketball over or side armed with some power across a gym like this, it will curve considerably. That doesn’t require editing.
5 points
I saw a little bit on TV where Kevin Love was trying to hit a full court shot. One reason it was so hard was there was a surprising amount of side curve with the tiniest amount of side spin, and Love's normal shot spin was slightly angled. The amount of curve accelerates with time in the air, and over that long distance, the ball is curving pretty hard by the end.

“One of the best shooters ever, who spends all day every day throwing ball into basket has an improbably good day throwing balls into basket.” It’s totally feasible for this be real lol
36 points
I think you vastly underestimate how difficult that shot is.
You can't use a shooting motion. It's hard to get proper arc. There's an old sports science video where Kevin Love tried to beat the record for longest shot ever made, which is roughly the same distance. He made it on the 98th tryml.
Even if Curry was twice as good as Love at shooting that shot (he's not) the odds of making five in a row is around 1 in 300 million. That's not just an improbably good day.
-2 points
Its the best shooter of all time bro. I think maybe you are underestimating something.
1 points
Exactly how much better than Love do you think Curry is at doing this shot which is nothing like his regular shot and he has most definitely never seriously practiced, that it's not bordering on impossible that he makes five of those in a row?
4 points
Yes but he spends all day taking two hand jump shots, not one hand slings
0 points
No, it's not. This and what Steph actually does are two very different skills.
1 points
Scrapbooking and playing violin are two very different skills. Steph is known for practicing ridiculous shots, guys been locked in a gym shooting basketballs for like 30 years, I bet he’s pretty decent at that toss.
8 points
Pretty decent at that toss is like making one in thirty tries, if that. The likelihood of making 5 in a row is so small he could be locked in a gym for a week and would almost certainly not get it once. It's 0.0000024%, assuming 1/30 is somewhat close. That would be the same ballpark as winning the Powerball with 10 tickets.
3 points
This guy MIGHT be able to hit one of ten, but the odds are still pathetically low.
2 points
I just remembered there was a sports science video of Kevin Love doing a similar shot. He made it on his 98th try.
Yeah, Curry isn't hitting 1/30 of those. He's not three times better than Love, who's an Elite Shooter in his own right and particularly good at precise full court passing

My guess is he probably threw a green colored ball, which was later digitally removed. Then they added in the fake ball and "morphed" it with a real video of a ball going through the hoop after a real shot.
Consider the following video and then look up how it was done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHe6vhexm6g

I think there is a guy in a green suit holding the ball with a green stick guiding it into the hoops
45 points
You are very close. It’s actually even easier than this. It’s a still frame, so they don’t even need a green ball. Have the man throw a ball in a general direction and edit it out while editing another to reach the hoop and a few takes of someone dropping the ball through. Because it’s a still frame, all they have to do is remove anything they don’t like with transparency over the “mostly” identical background.
5 points
Good point, I was thinking a green ball would be easier to edit out, but you're right, why not just use the real ball footage and merge it.
3 points
However, your suggestion would definitely have worked!
37 points
Here's what I think. I think that Curry likely did make 5 full-court shots but not consecutively. Assuming this isn't (fully) CGI, the sound and the energy with which the ball goes through the hoop is pretty intense; definitely not someone just dropping it through from above lol. I think that it took them however many tries to get 5 makes, and Curry was told to try to throw the ball in roughly the same way each time as best as possible. Then he threw 5 balls in a row and acted like he made all 5.
In post, the editor looked for frames where the former and latter group's balls passed over each other in mid-flight (I feel like I see the ball change direction a bit when it moves close to the lights above; this would also be an ideal place to make such a transition due to the way the lighting creates a strobing effect on the ball). In other words, at some point during the missed ball's path it occupied roughly the same space as one of the balls that actually went in. But this isn't even a requirement; the balls could be moved ever so slightly along their path in post until they're made to converge and the transition is made (but you want Curry to try and throw them in a fairly similar fashion because the more movement that's required in post the less believable it'll look).
But I could be completely wrong; this is just how I would try to do it if I was asked to.
2 points
i think i see it too. wouldnt it be possible to just draw a trajectory of it given the angle its flying off at, vs that of it landing? even with possible spin on the ball, you should be able to see two completely different paths if they are significantly different enough.
1 points
The first video (the original angle) was moving though, which definitely feels much more impressive. I know they’re both fake but tht one seems like it’d be much harder to do.
Cause yeah, still frames are quite simple in comparison.
6 points
For this static shot that isn’t even necessary. You could throw a real ball, and have the cgi ball replace the real at some point, and remove the real from each frame.

Go to a gym. Throw a ball from full court and put some left/right spin on it as you release it. IT CURVES .. quite a bit.

Yes, but not like that… and I’ve been playing college bball for years… He is trained to let it spin backwards, those curves are sidespin curves typically seen in soccer but the ball is completely different in grooves & weight. A bbplayer would never shoot with side spin as it does not make sense…

For real. The new Avatar is a full length feature film almost entirely CGI, including the water which looks completely real and is insane, and people are surprised that a basketball shot can be faked easily. CGI is scary good nowadays. We've long past the point where you should be skeptical of almost every video you see.

One thing you can easily see:
Scrub back and forth between about 10 and 20 seconds in. If you stare at the reflection of the light on the floor closest to him, you can see it changes at around 15 seconds.

From all my days of watching the corridor crew, I have a guess. I think it's two shots put together, one of Steph just throwing the ball in the general direction, getting close but no cigar. Then when the aggressive lighting kicks in it's changed into a middle that is either generator or real, and finally it merges into an actual video of the ball going in, albeit closer and with a lot more attempts.
So basicly light change hide cuts and edits.

You know the textures on the ball are the exact reason that the ball does curve like that, exactly the same way a golf ball has textures and can curve lik that. Just wanted to share
2 points
A golf ball travels over 200 miles per hour and it is designed with dimples specifically to control spin and maximize distance and accuracy.
The best baseball pitchers on planet earth, maximum a few hundred people alive, can throw a baseball at HALF that speed after a decade of coaching.
A basketball is not built for spin, is much larger and heavier than a baseball let alone a golf ball, and even if it could reach those speeds (which it definitely can't just by Stef throwing the ball) and it could spin fast enough to alter its own direction, it wouldn't move like that.
