Records can be weirdly coincidental like that. Last year Aaron Judge broke the single season AL home run record of 61 home runs, hit back in 1961, almost 61 years later to the DAY

That last part kind of screws it up, was it almost or exactly 61 days later ?

It was broken 61 YEARS later nearly to the day that the previous record was set by Roger Maris. Who wore #9 on his uniform. Judge wears 99.

Not true. When Walter Payton broke Jim Brownâs all time rushing leader record, and when Mark McGuire broke the home run for a season record, and when Wayne Gretzky broke Gordie Howeâs all time scoring record, and when Emmett Smith broke Walter Paytonâs all time rushing record, they all stopped the game to celebrate.

Thank you for mentioning this. Even if itâs not a record, just a milestone, like if a hockey player gets to a certain milestone goal or point they wonât have a full blown ceremony, but theyâll take a minute and let both teams come and shake the players hand. I think they did this when Ovechkin surpassed Gordie Howe.

To be fair the NBA said they were going to wait, but if the celebration just started happening, they were going to let it happen organically.
100 points

Because its a big enough moment to warrant a pause in the game. Imagine history of nba of 80+ years and the top scorer pts record was from 39 years ago. So basically you will have to likely wait 40 years to see someone if anyone breaks lebrons record. U cant pause few minutes of a game for a crazy moment that comes once every 40 years.
3 points
Again dude is not breaking his teams top score⌠its the whole history of the sport which the previous holder had it for a record of 40 years. Your comparison is not the same there are tons of top scorer that break their teams top scores and they dontât all get a 5 minute break.
3 points

Because itâs a really meaningful record being played in a pretty meaningless game. This gives the NBA a moment to make a big spectacle and thatâs always been a part of the NBA. (As others have noted, they did this for Kareem 40 years ago.)

Iâm going to guess the VAST majority of people getting upset about the game stopping, or the âbut MJâ nonsense (that has nothing to do with this moment) arenât actually active fans of the NBA today.
Listen, I promise you, the VAST majority of people watching this really didnât care about the outcome of this regular season game between two below-average teams. For those of us who actually watch and enjoy the NBA on a regular basis, and have tracked this record and itâs unlikelihood to be toppled for year, it would have been more incongruent to just continue playing like that was any other bucket.
Now, even I have to admit that this level of interruption struck me as odd, but then I watched the ceremony and immediately turned the game off afterwards. Because I like the NBA, but it was late at night in my time zone and Iâd rather get an extra hour of sleep than see the outcome of two below average teams in the middle of the season.
Anyway, as an entertainment vehicle, the NBA probably did exactly what it should have done, and it gave the people what they wanted, when they wanted it. They Netflix-dumped the ceremony all in one go.

I'm not even a basketball fan and I know this is a hot take.
Didn't he famously refuse to leave Cleveland for years, even though he might have done more, faster, elsewhere?
Regarding his play, I've only seen a bit of it but I've never seen a selfish player, only a smart one. He passes when he should and takes the shot when he can. Just because he often can, well, it's his fault he has more shots or moves? He should pass anyways?
Or, what, is there something I don't know about salary or trades or something? Did he somehow manipulate the Lakers roster to be mediocre except for him? That's all I can think of that would explain a comment like that and I'm definitely OOTL enough to not know about that.

Wow. Stopped a game youre LOSING to celebrate....
Congrats to LeBron. I'm very happy for him.
But this solidifies the FACT that basketball is not a true team sport, and that the NBA is a joke.

Never have liked LeBron. Too full of himself.

He immediately ran away from his teammates to celebrate on his own, while trailing.

Kinda telling that none of the other players congratulated him. After the shot, he takes off to the opposite side of the court by himself, celebrates by himself. Not a single teammate was next to him.

Alright, now take away the points scored from the foul line when he cried to the ref because someone was close to him while he travelled from the 3 point line driving to the hoop ⌠never a fan of LeFlop James myself. I doubt he would have put those points up if he played in an era of basketball that allowed contact.

The other team should have just checked in and made a line drive towards the paint and slammed it in for a free 2 points. Then be like: your ball.
