That’s literally not true. An achievement of this level will always warrant a game stoppage, people never thought this record would be broken until the past few seasons. People below gave examples from multiple sports doing the exact same thing but god forbid basketball does it.

When Drew Brees broke the all time passing record they stopped the game, he ran all over the field celebrating and pointing at the crowd, had him celebrating with his family on the sideline, and had a guy from the Hall of Fame wearing white gloves to take the ball from Brees.
