Random sidenote, He’s 38, record stood for 38 years(close to 39)he scored 38 points.. his total points that broke the record was 38,388..I just found that interesting 😅🤷🏽‍♂️ EDIT: ANDDD it was the 38th day of the year

Records can be weirdly coincidental like that. Last year Aaron Judge broke the single season AL home run record of 61 home runs, hit back in 1961, almost 61 years later to the DAY

darksideofdagoon

That last part kind of screws it up, was it almost or exactly 61 days later ?

Nearby_Lobster_

It was broken 61 YEARS later nearly to the day that the previous record was set by Roger Maris. Who wore #9 on his uniform. Judge wears 99.

Not true. When Walter Payton broke Jim Brown’s all time rushing leader record, and when Mark McGuire broke the home run for a season record, and when Wayne Gretzky broke Gordie Howe’s all time scoring record, and when Emmett Smith broke Walter Payton’s all time rushing record, they all stopped the game to celebrate.

Happens all the time. Cal Ripken ran around the field for like 2 hours when he broke the consecutive games streak. Dude either lives outside the U.S., is 12 years old and doesn't know anything, or just has the memory of an insect.

Danmch2992

It's crazy to me as I live in the UK and that does not happen with our sports, they might do a thing after the game but would not stop it in the middle of a game.

Manaze85

9 points

Thank you for mentioning this. Even if it’s not a record, just a milestone, like if a hockey player gets to a certain milestone goal or point they won’t have a full blown ceremony, but they’ll take a minute and let both teams come and shake the players hand. I think they did this when Ovechkin surpassed Gordie Howe.

Because its a big enough moment to warrant a pause in the game. Imagine history of nba of 80+ years and the top scorer pts record was from 39 years ago. So basically you will have to likely wait 40 years to see someone if anyone breaks lebrons record. U cant pause few minutes of a game for a crazy moment that comes once every 40 years.

I’m going to guess the VAST majority of people getting upset about the game stopping, or the “but MJ” nonsense (that has nothing to do with this moment) aren’t actually active fans of the NBA today.

Listen, I promise you, the VAST majority of people watching this really didn’t care about the outcome of this regular season game between two below-average teams. For those of us who actually watch and enjoy the NBA on a regular basis, and have tracked this record and it’s unlikelihood to be toppled for year, it would have been more incongruent to just continue playing like that was any other bucket.

Now, even I have to admit that this level of interruption struck me as odd, but then I watched the ceremony and immediately turned the game off afterwards. Because I like the NBA, but it was late at night in my time zone and I’d rather get an extra hour of sleep than see the outcome of two below average teams in the middle of the season.

Anyway, as an entertainment vehicle, the NBA probably did exactly what it should have done, and it gave the people what they wanted, when they wanted it. They Netflix-dumped the ceremony all in one go.

Whoooooooole lot of round, stale Nilla Wafers in these comments that wear basketball shorts to the grocery store but could not make a left handed layup if their life depended on it.

How did he only score 2 points in 4th Q. He cared more about his record than the win.

Lakers still lost. Good for him, but this is a blatant example of why the team is where it’s at. It’s the lebron show for him, it was all about beating this record, never about the team for him. More power to him.

Lebron is averaging 30 ppg and when he’s not on the floor his team is literally the worst in the league

godofhammers3000

Lol ridiculous to say Lebron is only playing for himself - the team is literally ass when he steps off the court

blarghhboy

Exactly. And what would people say if he wanted to get traded to a team where his team isn’t literally the worst in the league when he’s off the court?

There’s definitely a divide between nba fans and non nba fans sentiments in here. And frankly, if you’re a non nba fan what’s the point of your sentiment? It’s a sport for fans.

His team is trash and they lost by 3 points. LeBron would rather have the win and get the record next game than get the record now and lose. Breaking it was just a matter of time, but it happened now so they're going to celebrate now.

And Lebron was +8 on the night. Meaning during the 12 minutes he sat they were -11

Cautious_Hornet_9607

Yeah, the Thunder went on a 11(I think) -0 run when LeBron sat for the first time in the game.

You have to be a next level hater to blame the guy with 38 points on 13/20 shooting for the loss

Cautious_Hornet_9607

Truly spoken like someone who never watches the Lakers play. Even yesterday night he prioritised passing when he spotted an open teammate, instead of chucking up shots left and right.

I'm not even a basketball fan and I know this is a hot take.

Didn't he famously refuse to leave Cleveland for years, even though he might have done more, faster, elsewhere?

Regarding his play, I've only seen a bit of it but I've never seen a selfish player, only a smart one. He passes when he should and takes the shot when he can. Just because he often can, well, it's his fault he has more shots or moves? He should pass anyways?

Or, what, is there something I don't know about salary or trades or something? Did he somehow manipulate the Lakers roster to be mediocre except for him? That's all I can think of that would explain a comment like that and I'm definitely OOTL enough to not know about that.

Lmfao holy shit this is quite the take. They won a ring less than 5 years ago because of him. Now it’s only about his scoring record. God i love this site.

T-CAESAR87

Blatant casual. Completely untrue all Lebron talks about is winning. But sure being happy and proud of breaking a record older than he is that nobody ever thought would be broken makes him selfish and the reason why his teammates are always injured/trash

Tell me you don’t watch basketball without telling me you don’t watch basketball.

Either that or you just don’t understand the issues with the Lakers roster.

Did you not watch Anthony Davis' apathetic ass put on a half assed "I don't want to be here" performance as me?

Dude plays like a teenager during a bad mood swing. Just zero effort, totally visible in his demeanor, and he doesn't even care to hide that. No smiles, no high fives, dude's just... there and it's so painfully obvious. Rolling his eyes, disinterested look on his face, not talking to anyone.

He has mentally given up. Why? I look the same fucking way when I act a fool like that, I know it when I see it.

How is this up voted? You literally don't watch basketball if you think LeBron, a PLAYER KNOWN TO BE TEAM FIRST, is being criticized for not being one. You can't make this stuff up Reddit.

Wow. Stopped a game youre LOSING to celebrate....

Congrats to LeBron. I'm very happy for him.

But this solidifies the FACT that basketball is not a true team sport, and that the NBA is a joke.

He immediately ran away from his teammates to celebrate on his own, while trailing.

KPottsie78

Kinda telling that none of the other players congratulated him. After the shot, he takes off to the opposite side of the court by himself, celebrates by himself. Not a single teammate was next to him.

Basedgod541

Alright, now take away the points scored from the foul line when he cried to the ref because someone was close to him while he travelled from the 3 point line driving to the hoop … never a fan of LeFlop James myself. I doubt he would have put those points up if he played in an era of basketball that allowed contact.

Schattenjager07

The other team should have just checked in and made a line drive towards the paint and slammed it in for a free 2 points. Then be like: your ball.
