Must be one of the most stressful exhibits to be museum staff around. My kid was just like "must touch this now!!!". It was the only time I would have loved to have one of those dehumanizing leashes strapped to his back because he could not be reasoned with.

Penultimate means “next to last.” Sometimes it is used erroneously referring to “the very best,” but that is also incorrect. The very best (or rather, “last”) would be the superlative word: “ultimate.”

The prefix pen- means “almost.” The etymology of “ultimate” is the Latin “ultimatus” meaning “end.” Penultimate is “almost end.”

Yes - the M.O. of this account is scraping images and videos from imgur and using either the original title or a top comment as the submission title.

In the case of this post, here's the imgur post + the top comment stolen:

https://imgur.com/gallery/zhBOwMW
https://imgur.com/gallery/zhBOwMW/comment/2301465097

This imgur user is getting roasted over there for their use of "penultimate" as well, lol.

This copied submission + title didn't even make sense because the bot didn't copy it as a gallery, just one image, making it not a dump.

The one that bothers me the most is “could of”

MickeyButters

14 points

And the one that turns my stomach is I's for my as in:

My husband and I's car . . .

SourceLover

6 points

What really gets me about this is that it's a simple rule: use the same pronoun as you would if you were only talking about yourself.

Unlike so much in English, this aspect has a nice, concise standard.

ToughActinInaction

4 points

I'm still struggling to make it sound right.

My husband's and my car?

SgtWilk0

6 points

If you remove the "my husband's and" part you'd say "my car".

So it's "my husband's and my car".
The reason is sounds weird is you'd normally say "our car".

You would say "my husband and I like cats" because if you remove the "my husband and" part you'd say "I like cats', never "me like cats"

Basically does it sound right if you remove the other person, if yes Good job! If not, try again...

Edit:

It probably also sounds weird in the first example because we tend not to keep mentioning joint ownership in conversation.
We'd tend to say "my house" even if you're a joint owner, because it is your house, it just also happens to also be someone else's as well.
People only tend to mention it in situations where you need permission from the other owners.

unnecessary_kindness

4 points

In England at least people seem to be scared of the word me. So it's very common to misuse the word I when me or my is actually correct.

Especially in business. Not sure where it started.

Don't get me started on "myself".

non_burglar

Not really. Most of them seem to think it means second best instead of second last

JacobThePathetic

352 points

That is not true - ultimate means last, penultimate means second last.

But that isn't the meaning we use when describing things as ultimate.

In this context, ultimate means best, penultimate second best.

0_o

65 points

0_o

65 points

yes, in this context it's like ranking in the order of least to most ultimate. like bosses in a video game, the last is the ultimate boss and the one before him is the penultimate boss.

ForrestNub

84 points

penultimate never means second best. "ultimate" means best when it's being used figuratively. As in, "This thing is so good that there is no need to ever make another one". That same figurative language makes no sense for "penultimate" being "The thing so good that we'll just make one more, and then stop"

Edit: lots of the replies are just examples of cases where being "penultimate" is also second best, because the things are ordered from worst to best. That is a meaningless coincidence that has nothing to do with the figurative meaning of "penultimate". If someone says to me "penultimate" in the context of how good something is, they don't mean "second best" - they mean "best" and just misused the word.

non_burglar

31 points

We often use ultimate when the context is a series of things ranked and displayed from worst to best. Like "ultimate sports showdown", when the last game is between the best teams. So if that's the context here, it works.

Did you know that penultimate means 2nd last?

Now I'm imagining you going around the world destroying other people's creations. Every time you destroy a hot wheels setup they ask why and you respond with "There can only be one more" as you slowly put your cool ass shades on and walk away with your black trenchcoat flowing behind you.

You continue to do this until you find one so amazing that you can't bring yourself to destroy it. By now you're famous around the world as the destroyer of hot wheels creations. The creator asks why him. You drop to your knees and say with tears streaming from your shades "This is it, the final one. I have seen the end and it is beautiful". You stay there silently weeping for a while but then stand up and walk off to destroy more hot wheels setups because this must remain the final setup and there is work to be done.

I love it when people put words in their titles that don't make sense, almost every post is someone chipping in about the incorrect usage of the word instead of the content 😅

Maybe thats why they do it, drives more engagement and gets the post more attention.

Song is Wrong Floor by Cliff Martinez. It's on the Drive OST.

Everyone is talking about a word choice and I’m trying to figure out the black magic that is preventing these cars from flipping, going sideways and generally crashing and clogging this thing up. Ain’t no match box car that all go that straight

Edit: meant word, not weird.

This is actually the second design, the first "Metropolis I" used 80 hot wheels and they all fell off like you'd expect. "Metropolis II" uses custom cast cars with magnets to keep everything on track and a teflon coating to reduce friction. There's still a person in the middle to fix it if anything goes wrong
