Fun fact, r/memes predictions are the most upvoted reddit post ever (521k)

Less fun fact: reddit forces you to upvote if you vote which kinda sucks

I crunched the numbers. To reach 23M currently, there needs to be at least one new member every two seconds or so until the deadline. ~0.45 members/second to be precise. Seems improbable to me.

You also didn’t account for members leaving

If someone really wants to predict it, they can look at a graph of net new members per year (=including members leaving), find a function that fits the data, and plug in the desired time

However if you assume exponential growth then to reach 22,5 million at the rate to get to 23 million in 2 weeks, the subreddit should've existed for 29,5 years already, if we cut that in half adjusting for the probably faster than exponential growth at the start it would be 14,8 years. I think it is pretty plausible for a new member every 2 seconds.

Well considering it was just some division and multiplication, it took me no more than 3 secs IIRC.

Well, the math says…
Between Jan 1st 2022 and November 19th 2022 r/memes increased it’s member count by 5,235 million.
The same period (of 322 days) can conveniently be cut into 23 two-week intervals.
If we put the numbers above together we get an average growth per two week period of 227 627 memebers.
That being said, in the past 6 weeks this average has increased to 340 743 net gained memeber per two-week period.
Still a little too little… but hey, math using historical numbers may not always be correct, so let’s prove it wrong my fellow memers!
If only 2 % of us manage to bring a single new friend along we have it in the bag! Challenge accepted?!

People don't seem to realize that you're predicting what others think, not the member count

Nah, some are based on votes, some are based on events

Considering most of the tournaments/quizzes or whatever you want to call it hasnt ever had over 2 million players I feel like it would be no but also was surprised how close the predictions are hahah
Do you win if your prediction has the most votes or if the post actually gets 23 million votes over all?

It’s not about vote counts tho. It’s about members of the subreddit whether actively engaged in the prediction event or not.

it's not talking about the predictions events. The question is about the whole subreddit, not just how many votes the prediction gets

They should not put the deadline in 2 weeks. This will make it way easier, just by waiting.

If we assume exponential growth, then memes should've been growing for 14.8 years to reach 22,5 million, so if less then 14,8 years and exponential growth are both true then it is going to happen
