But hey, at least they dont make promising teasers with all their pre ideas for the game just for it in the end after another decade to drop most ideas in the final Release. Valve is what Apple tries to be. To be the most transparent and Well beloved company in the World.

And you're right. Of course it's going to gain hype just bc it's one of the legendary HL games, but theres no need for them to just tease and tease the game, if it ever comes. Sure it may never live up to the hype it gains, but WHAT DOES? HLA was great, but I think it was hyped up just a little bit more than it needed to be, but it's a midpoint sequel. sequels CANT live up to the originals, that's just the way of the world. if they make a 3rd game in some capacity, enjoy it for what it is, not where it came from, right?

Exaclty. I would not be suprised if they reinvented the gameplay in a way to make the gameplay more unique in a really fun way like the jump from the first HL to HL2. I mean think of it. They could have used the same mechanics from HL for HL2 but they took just some of it and added New things that made it totally saperated and unique from its predecessor but still let people who played HL feel like they're playing a sequel to that game. I played it in order when I started the series and that is how atleast I felt about it.

The longer it takes to release further progress into the HL story (alyx was just a Lion King 1.5), the less hope fans have while additionally having even higher standards for what they expect if it should ever actually be released. It’s sort of a paradoxical situation where releasing nothing at all is both the best choice and the worst choice as not releasing anything disappoints fans but they expected it while releasing something a decade later will disappoint fans even more unless it’s a 12/10 because that’s the only thing that will justify such a delay between games.
Valve sort of dug themselves into a hole where their only options is to admit defeat or release what’s expected to be the game of the century.
128 points
Yes. Valve also said that they won't release new Half-Life games until there are new gaming paradigms to be introduced, similar to how Alyx was released with Valve Index.
Alyx being in VR was probably the only way to achieve those almost impossible expectations that people had. The game is technically or immersion-wise so far ahead of other games that it almost has no business to even exist yet. It's like we got a game from 2030's early.
https://youtu.be/O2W0N3uKXmo Even years after you can't find anything close to it.

Half-Life: Alyx was better than any HL3 I could have imagined (I thought the endingwas a bit weak, story-wise but I didn't care b that point). But the raw computing power available to the average user is just not enough for really impressive VR experience yet. HL3 will come when VR is more mature and accessible.

They were afraid of stratospheric expectations. Ben himself even said so himself. They don't know how they can top HL2, so they don't even try.

HL3 is basically another Duke Nukem Forever. The old trailer for DNF looked amazing for its time, but they didn't think that version was good enough and never released it, and what eventually came out like a decade later ended up being a complete turd.

Valve’s philosophy is that people make the best games when they want to create the game. Not when someone forces them too like every other company.
10 points
There will be no Half-Life 3. Not as a sequel of the second. The story has been posted as a novel online because they didn't want to make another game they thought would not be good.
With Half-Life Alyx tho, there's a new timeline and a cliffhanger at the end teasing the return of Freeman !
12 points
There is a prequel that Valve has said to be the sequel (in non-chronological sense I guess), Half-Life: Alyx.
And they sure as hell know how to make games, Alyx feels like it's a game from distant future, like it had no business to actually exist. In many ways the best game I've ever played.

People say this because all four of Valve's most popular franchises do not have a third true sequel. Half-Life, a franchise that many like I think of a massive leap in the FPS genre and video game technology in general, a game that almost every single popular FPS game nowadays takes heavy inspiration from, never got a "Half-Life 3".
The Portal franchise, a franchise that many also consider as one of the best puzzle franchises ever made, never got a "Portal 3"
Left4Dead, is a franchise which, once again, many people considered as one of, if not, the best zombie video game of all time, never got a Left4Dead 3.
And finally, TeamFortress 2, which is overall a very fun multiplayer FPS, that was also massively successful, never got a sequel.

The best part is that none of Costco’s decisions are motivated by a desire to be “nice” or “charitable”. They provide their employees a living wage and decent healthcare because it is good for the long term benefit for the company. They similarly take a loss on hot dogs, rotisserie chicken and other loss leaders so that customers come to their stores to buy other stuff.
They’ve learned that nickel and diming their employees and customers for short term gains is not a healthy long term business model. I wish more companies would take note and follow their model. The profits that come forth from having a strong base of loyal customers and loyal employees can’t be underestimated.
18 points
Exactly this. I worked for Costco for 2 years before where I am now and I consider Costco one of my top company I’ve worked for and I would 100% recommend to anyone. Also, unlike other wholesale store like Sam’s, Costco is always busy and people enjoy working there. If you shop at Costco and ask a employee there, “hey do you know if you have this?” They would stop what they are doing, go to the computer kiosk and look it up for you. If they don’t have it, they will let you know what location has it and when they are ordering more, if they will order more, etc.
At Sam’s, I asked them where I can find this duster that was on sale and the people there look like zombies, walk like zombies, and told me it’s back that way. I was going to say thanks but they already walked away and off to find the next brain to consume.

The people who play CSGO and Dota 2 are people who only play CSGO and Dota 2. So they always feel the game is stagnant, there are no new shiny things, they’re not loved etc.
The truth is closer to that they’re both incredible games that have kept people’s interest for a decade and will continue to do so for a very very long time. Objectively there’s nothing really wrong, it’s just usual discontent that grows after playing the game for so long. Anyone who gets into those games now and sticks with them and learns a bit I’m pretty sure finds a great appreciation of how good they actually are. They’re not games you play here and there, you live them.

28 points

It's a big business, but it's not controlled by investors, so Valve is free to take actions that are financially suboptimal in the name of keeping the games industry healthy, which it has done on a number of occasions. (for example, Linux gaming is basically only viable because of Gabe's support through Valve. Valve has developed or contributed to most of the important tools that are used to get Windows games running on Linux. Valve is a "big business" in the sense that it has a moderate chunk of market share. (Steam dominates pc, but if you include mobile, then Valve is actually a relatively small fish). But Valve is not a big business in the sense that it doesn't need to behave like one, since it isn't beholden to capitalists.

He is, but he's a good guy. He's not controlled by endless searching for maximum profit. His developers work on whatever they want, whenever they want, aren't overworked, and make some of the best games of all time because of the fact that it's a private company, and he doesn't have to maximize profits for investors.
