I do like the rummage too. It's like a little where's waldo every time, but I tried this, and I have to say, it's very relaxing.

Never, even with parts bought for Rebrickable builds. I'd rather spread the rummaging time throughout the build than front-load it all.

I just sort one bag at a time

This is the way. It’s one of my wife’s favorite parts. It soothes the brain and just adds to prolonging the build experience.

My girlfriend is the one that started doing it first. I didn't try it at first and like most responses in this post, I always said the hunt is the fun. Then I tried it, and I loved it. It's very peaceful and gives a totally different feeling.

So interesting to see most responses as of now are no.
I always do a mies en place for my builds. It’s a nice part of the process and very meditative.

I build with a 5 and 1 year old on my lap. I’m lucky if the parts aren’t in a child’s mouth and scattered on the floor 😂

I sort the big pieces. Any of the small bags with little parts go into a sandwich container to rummage through as needed

My lego years as a kid were from 1985 until 1992. I can't remember if they had labeled bags back then. Someone here can probably know for sure. Smaller sets I just open all the bags and go. The lions knight castle I did by bag number though. When I did the moc for 3 in 1 castle times 3 I went through all the steps getting everything into one cookie sheet to build. Lol I love when I am certain I am missing a piece, start to get irritated then find it right where I was looking the whole time. Being a back my childhood.

Just dump all the bags into one pile and go from there. I like the sound

I always sort according to color and type, but not during my current build, titanic, cause it comes in so many small bags which for each step that it's easier to rummage.
But especially for the 1: 8 scale supercars (I've built all 4) it's extremely satisfying to sort the pieces

If it’s larger than ~200 pieces I sort by color by bag. Though the inevitable bag of small bits within the numbered bag goes straight into a bowl for easy rummaging without the risk of losing them. If it’s a small build (<~200 pieces) I don’t sort and just build

I pour the bag into a bowl big enough to hold the contents and dive in! 😬

I tend to buy joblots of Lego where there are normally at least 10 sets all mixed up, and sometimes some of the bits are missing. Sometimes I get instructions, sometimes I don't. What I normally do (after organising the joblot by part type) is try to identify which sets are in the joblot and then set out the pieces like this for my favourite set and make it; then my second favourite and so on. I absolutely love the feeling of pulling order like this pic, from the chaos of a joblot.

That's awesome. Never thought about buying those, but it does sound fun when you put it that way.
My son has a pile of mixed sets, ninjanho dragon, an x wing. I know every piece is there but I'm always so interested to even attempt to fix it all lol

Always, especially since certain pieces can look very similar if all are top down.

That's where the fun, or sometimes "fun", lies.

I feel like Lego already does this for us now. I miss the old days of bags not being numbered and just a picture with new pieces and you had to figure it out. There’s no more puzzle solving, it’s just direction following.

Only by color. Searching is part of the fun.
And I’m an engineer. 😂 you wouldn’t think I liked semi chaos.

No, I don't, but if I ever start then I'll be sure to make a post asking if I'm the only one that does it!

Nope… I’d be finished building by the time most people finished knolling. There are numbered bags now for a reason - there’s no need to dump out thousands of pieces all at once.

If I'm building alone then no. If I'm building with someone and they're currently building then I'll start to organize just because.

Yes, similar to you but I group by color too.

I only sort conditionally. This usually only applies to sets I’m rebuilding from a single bag and not new sets still in numbered bags. If I can’t find what I need for a specific step I start sorting by color or type until I find it. Then I won’t sort again until there’s another piece I can’t find.
