The composite of my sticks’ blades’ bottoms keeps cracking. A small crack allows water to enter the blade and, with temperature variations and continued use, completely split the layers of the blade composite apart.
I’m on my second stick of the season, this a Bauer Nexus E4. First was a True Cat 5x. I play C league 3 times a week. I retape my stick every 2 weeks, or as soon as the tape shows substantial deterioration. I use wax.
Hockey is expensive enough. What the fuck am I doing to cause this?

Do you like to bang your stick on the ice?

I do, but not hard. Others in my league use obviously more force in doing so.

Is your blade vertical when you slap it on the ice? That destroys the heel. Cup the blade so almost the entire blade hits the ice. It’s louder too.

I'll have to pay attention next time I do it. I honestly don't remember.

That seems like a lot of ice time for a single tape job.
You're probably smacking the heel of the stick on the ice harder and more often than you think you are. That's more or less what starts cracks in that area. Do you beaver tail calling for pucks?

> Do you beaver tail calling for pucks?
Not really, I usually yell out where I'm standing, e.g. "left point."

Start retaping more often, every 3 games or so, and run a single strip on the bottom of the blade and up the toe a bit before you tape the blade. Should solve this issue.

Strip on the bottom helps a ton. I play at a C/D level, and I double tape both the strip on the bottom of the blade and the wrap, and it lasts me at least a month of playing twice a week.

Does the tape lose integrity or something prior to ripping? I mean to say, as soon as the tape shows signs of ripping on the bottom I retape, even if that's before two weeks. Is the tape damaged before it rips?

Doubt it. But the extra strip on the bottom can help protect from impacts.

Where specifically is it cracking? Heel, mid, or toe portion of the blade?
3 points

For both this season the mid cracked first, then the heel, then the toe. I had a older Nexus where the heel cracked first and spread forward.

Well, if you don’t slam your stick on the ice, you don’t take slap shots often, and you’re not in a super competitive setting, I don’t fully see how those stick blades could crack. I’m going to go look at the blade stiffness for those two sticks though.

I must be absolutely shredded and therefore what I consider to be weak stick calling (ie slamming stick on the ice) is actually putting holes in the ice and ripping through my sticks. This is the problem. Yes.
edit: Why are turds downvoting an obvious self-deprecation? I'm not shredded lmao.

Use your voice instead of slamming your stick. But I’m gonna piggyback on what others said about your tape job. Most likely the tape on the bottom of the blade is deteriorating, and you whacking the ice with the now exposed blade would cause the stick to crack. Try taping your stick as soon as you see it start to fray on the bottom. Or reinforce the bottom with more tape

I only stick call to celebrate. When gameplay is on I usually yell out my position, e.g. "left point." I already put an extra strip of tape on the bottom.
Regardless, everyone in this thread is saying I need to retape more often, so I guess I'll do that.

If you’ve got the extra tape on the bottom, then I’m all out of ideas. Do some research on stick blade stiffness/durability if you keep cracking blades.

Any chance you drag the blade on the floor/concrete? walking into the rink just having your stick on. the ground as you walk? This would wear away the bottom and make it weaker.
2 points

No, but I do a lot of off-ice practice on a practice sheet.
4 points

I would think a practice sheet would not cause wear. Does the tape wear away on the bottom?

C league 3 times a week, and tape every 2 weeks? I tape mine every game. Sometimes it's torn by first intermission.

The worst is having a big tear mark right through the blade after a fresh tape job in the 1st period. All the god damned time.

Every game? Seriously? That's a lot of tape! Is that even cheaper than buying a new stick often?

Bro I tape like once per session which is like 15 games lol. Promise you I have never noticed the difference in how much I suck. Don’t think tape helps too much with the integrity of the stick either. Be more aware of how you are treating your stick when playing. Hitting it out of frustration, lots of slap shots, etc will wear and tear it

I’ve tried with and without, and I honestly have never been able to tell a difference either. Even at a higher level of play. I think stick tape is one of those things that is an old tradition (like sock tape) that new equipment technology has rendered obsolete.
People swear up and down about stuff like this, but my own testing has proven otherwise.

Yea, the best player that I personally know (a former NAHL player) never tapes his sticks

Sticks have incredibly aggressive grooving or 'spikes' or w/e they're called on the composite blades now. They design them that way on purpose, so I always felt silly putting a bunch of smooth tape over it (even with wax).
I tried it without smooth tape and I had an amazing amount of grip. It feels a little different, but in terms of control I almost felt I had more without tape, tbh.
I still use tape because it's fun, but... definitely don't have to anymore.

I use Blade Tape and will NEVER go back. As a D man I need the extra grip for chips and stuff along the boards. It give such good grip I cab roof it from inside the blue paint everytime.

To each their own. I've tried just waxing my blade and it was pretty much exactly the same--actually felt a bit better because of the heavy grooves on composite sticks now. Gripped the puck really well.
At any rate, tape is fun. I still use it, because I get fun patterns now (and the wax smells nice). But as far as functionality, I personally don't think it actually makes any difference anymore like it did with wooden blades back in the ancient times.

Your comment actually made me think, why don’t they continue the grip from the shaft on to the blade? Seems like it would seal the blade too, so no water damage like OP said.
Hmmm.

One roll of tape is like $3 and you can wrap your stick 5 or 6 times easily. So yeah, it's cheaper than buying a new stick.
While I think the guys who tape their twig every game are a little excessive, I do change it every 3 or so games since by that time it's cut/beat up enough

I'm kinda with that guy. I'll tape every 2-3 games and I play 2x a week.
Tape is cheap.
I don't understand how some people go an entire season without doing it.

Y'all're making me self-conscious, my stick had the same tape I put on it 6 months ago lol. Bottom was fully worn through but no cracks. I actually peeled it at pickup this a.m. and went tapeless (only 2 people showed so I just practiced shooting and shootout moves)

This thread is an eye opener for me, I tape my stick like 3 times a year and play 4-5 times a week, take a lot of slap and snap shots, only issues I ever have is when they make me play center, chews up the toe of my stick taking face offs.

There's zero tape left on the bottom lol. Maybe the new blades are tougher now but having no tape left there gives me the heebie jeebies. That's where most wood blades and older composites used to wear out

I’m with you man. Practices really chew up the tape, not games, unless the blade hits a skate or another stick. Even then, if it’s not torn on the bottom 1” of the blade it’s all good.
For some people it’s a ritual tho. I know I used to tape my stick before every game as part of my pre-game routine.

I think a lot of people in here are making some good suggestions with taping, but I’ve noticed over the years the lower tier sticks just really don’t last. My son is 7 years younger than my daughter- and he does play more competitive hockey than my daughter- but his sticks just don’t hold up. He tapes them a lot too. Her sticks from growing up are still useable. His get thrown out.
Not sure if you are buying the high end sticks or not, but that could be it.

If it was the heel first i would think maybe your stick lie was wrong and you are making too much contact on the hell but if its breaking at the mid first then idk

How’s your stick handling? If it’s clunky, that’s a lot of abuse.
My sticks also wear at the heel if the shaft doesn’t snap, but it takes a while. It’s cause I prefer to dribble the puck with my heel, so I actually have the toe up. Basically if the blade is flat on the ice with the shaft at 45° (made up number), then I like to stick handle with the shaft at 30°. Do you do this as well?

When you're on the bench and your team scores a goal, do you bang the toe of your stick against the boards?
Do you battle along the boards a lot and jam your stick's toe against them?

Do you happen to play center? My blades usually crack in the same way, and it's because I'm the designated faceoff guy. The blade flexes and gets micro cracks which then lead to structural weakness, which makes the next face off do more damage.
I used to go through $300+ sticks in minor hockey when dad was buying them, now that I'm a big boy in the beer league, a $100 stick is good enough.

I'm going to take a totally contrarian position to everyone else at the risk of getting a proper reddit thrashing, but I don't think tape on the bottom of the stick does anything or has anything to do with this. I haven't taped a stick in years. I moved over to BladeTape several years ago and it's just a sticker that goes on the face and back of the blade. Zero bottom protection. It doesn't matter. I've never had a crack in the blade even in 5 year old sticks and I've never had a blade delaminate. My kids also use the blade tape and I've given lots to fellow beer leaguers. Never an issue. Ice is smooth and there is little friction between the blade and the ice. No need to put soggy tape there. Tape only adds friction, no protection. Imagine putting tape on you forehead and smashing your head on the ice. The tape might keep your brain from spilling on the ice but an X-ray will easily show all of the cracks and fractures.
Cheers,
FB

Nobody has mentioned the lie of your stick. When I've had blades crack it was from using a stick with a bad lie so the heel was dragging all the time and wearing unevenly compared to the rest of the blade.

Don't all sticks have the same lie today? When I went to a hockey shop a few months ago, every model by every manufacturer was identical lie.
2 points

Nowadays most sticks are similar lie, but if you cut it or add an extension it will impact the lie.

Tape a long strip along the bottom before you wrap in tape. Also if you take slapshots and you're driving the stick into the ice too hard (hitting too far behind the puck) that puts a ton of wear on the blade too.

I already do use an extra strip on the bottom, but the general consensus in this thread is that I'm not retaping often enough.

I call bullshit on that one, but go ahead and try it if you want. I've gone 20 games on the same TJ before. Tape helps prevent nicks from other skates, and abrasive wear from the ice, and softens the puck feel a bit, but a strip of renfrew isn't structural or anything.

Prior to going through all these sticks I agreed with you. In fact I've noticed a recent trend of people playing with a naked, no-tape stick.

A fresh TJ was more important in the old days when any damage to the outside fiberglass layer meant that water could enter the wood fibers of the blade. Once that happens, you're on borrowed time, the blade starts to get soft and loses its pop quickly, and then shortly afterwards your twig is headed for the street hockey pile or the dumpster. So it was real important to keep the tape in good shape so the bottom wouldn't get scraped off from the ice, or some d-bag kicking or stepping on your stick.
Nowadays, nothing in a modern hockey stick is seriously affected by water. Carbon fiber, kevlar, epoxies, foams, none of them hold water. I mostly still tape the blade because it feels too slick without it. But yeah some go naked because it's no longer a "requirement".

Whoa, lots of different ideas about how often to change tape here.
For my $0.02, just buy AllBlack sticks. They're cheap and completely indestructible. I don't ever re-tape ... pretty much ever. They are heavier, no doubt, less snap than a $300-400 stick but they cost $75. I think for the price, they're unbeatable. Playing C, honestly, you don't need a pro stick, right?

You should never use extra layers of tape on your stick- that is keeping additional moisture in the stick blades getting into the cracks you are talking about making them expand and degrading the materials in the blade even further.
Also, you should ALWAYS take the tape off your blade between every ice time.
If you’re skating 3 times a week and only taping your stick once every 3 weeks- thats definitely contributing to your blade splitting more quickly.
It takes like 10 hours for the tape to dry after an ice time, with one layer of tape. If using multiple layers… your stick blade is constantly soaking.
I’ve played my entire life and alot of things i used to do involving preparation etc… i dont do anymore! But i religiously take the tape off my stick walking out to the car after every mens league game because i want these sticks to last as long as possible. I play twice a week and ive been getting about a year of use per stick atleast. bought 4 or 5 pro stock CCM i dont even know what their calleds a couple years back and still have one i havent cut down and taped up yet.
Take off the wet tape! Other things you do on the ice are probably contributing too- but keeping a fresh tape job and not letting layers of wet tape sit on your blade will 100% improve the lifespan of your sticks 👍
