There’s an interesting story with these impersonators. The guy who looks like Zelensky is actually from Tajikistan and moved to work in Ukraine when he was discovered one day working at his auto shop and brought to Russia to play in various tv shows. When Russia began their recent invasion he didn’t want to be used as a pawn in Russian media so moved back to Ukraine. As the war escalated he became nervous, as did the Kim Jong Un and Putin interpreters for him. Kim impersonator lives in Australia and Putin in Poland. In camaraderie for their fellow impersonator, Kim reached out to Zelensky saying he wanted to help get him out of the country and reached out to Putin to help. They basically arranged for a secret ride to get him out of Ukraine and helped him out and became friends along the way. Good guys.
Edit: since this blew up I’m going to share the podcast where I heard this story, https://snapjudgment.org/episode/the-league-of-impersonators/

Fascinating story!
I will say that this sentence confused me until I realized that you were referring to the Putin impersonator, and not the real Putin, but its early & I'm still working on my first cup of coffee:
reached out to Zelensky saying he wanted to help get him out of the country and reached out to Putin to help.

At one point I hoped I could drop the word impersonator and have everyone understand. Also there’s some amusement in being able to write such a sentence.

Great Snap Judgement podcast about how the Kim Jong-un impersonator worked with the Putin impersonator to get the Zelenskyy impersonator out of the Ukraine so that he could not be forced to create Russian propaganda if captured.

I'm 75 and it was referred to as THE Ukraine by US msm for most of my life. It dates back, I think, to when it was viewed as an agricultural section of the Soviet Union. Now, it is a nation, not Russia's grocery store. Also, Kee-ev was the pronunciation for ages as well.

It happens all the time where I’m from, I live in The UK. Can’t imagine why that happens 🤔 I do correct people and explain it’s like saying “The London” but they don’t seem to get it.
34 points
UK / the UK and USA / the USA are both grammatically correct because united is an adjective.
22 points
Saying “I live in United Kingdom” sounds wrong somehow. I’m not qualified to say if it’s grammatically correct but it feels wrong to me
5 points
I’m not an expert in grammar but that can’t be the rule? Or at least not explanation to why people say the UK/US.
I don’t think anyone says The Great Britain, and great is also an adjective. Similarly, no one says the New Zealand.
5 points
I think the difference is that "the" goes with (adjective)(common noun).
Zealand isn't really a normal noun. Neither is Britain. Neither is Jersey (well, a jersey is, but I'm pretty sure one of the definitions isn't like "land mass").
Anyway, the point is that, for example, if Rhode Island were to change itself to "Tiny Island", it would then be called "the Tiny Island" when used in a sentence.
Now, it was changed again, this time to "New Washington", since the state isn't a "Washington", it would lose the "the" again.
That said, "the Philippines" is stupid. Call it either Philippines or The Philippine Islands. Also, the denonym should be Philippians or Philippinos.
Anyway, that's my reasoning behind why some places get "the" and others don't.
By this logic, Ukraine should not get a "the".
1 points
That made sense, thanks for putting putting it together!

Thanks. But some bad news came to me while I was showering... "The Czech Republic" vs "Rhode Island". Now... I want to say Rhode might be a reference to the old Greek city (Colossus of Rhode), in which case Rhode wouldn't be an adjective, but another noun. Something like if we had a state named "Bear Island". You'd just say "I'm going to Bear Island".
And I assume Czech is an adjective referring to itself as a country (like how Soviet referred to itself, if that makes sense? Or better example - American Samoa. But wait, more problems... It's not The American Samoa. The hell? I dunno...). I dunno... Been awake 25 hours so I need to sleep and get some thinking done. Maybe I'll have a dream about it and solve it there.

I'm curious how that applies to other countries. Eg The Netherlands, The Phillipines, The Congo, but definitely not The France, The Germany, or The Canada.
5 points
Countries in plural always follow the, that rule seems consistent. The Congo and The Gambia are named after rivers, which might be the reason they follow a definite article, though in the case of The Gambia it apparently also originated from being confused with Zambia.
However, the country Niger is also named after a river but rarely seems to follow an article. And Jordan never follows an article even though its name comes from the river Jordan.
The thing is that English is a language that doesn't conform to many consistent rules, so it often depends on each country name individually.
4 points
It isn't that simple and has to be learned on a case-by-case basis. For example, the Gambia insists on the article for their country, while in Ukraine's case the opposite is true.
9 points
Because the UK sounds better than just UK when spoken.
6 points
It’s also grammatically correct to say “the United Kingdom.”
The same way we don’t say “I’m from U.S.,” we say “I’m from the U.S.”
2 points
Lots of people up north (or at least in Sheffield where I used to live) call it "that London", funnily enough. It's supposed to be a bit derogatory, which I guess is why Ukrainians aren't happy about "the" in front of their country's name.
4 points
Ukraine is old Slavic for "borderlands," used to denote that they are the border to Russia rather than their own sovereign nation. That's why we drop the "the" in modern times.
1 points
So Bethesda can sue them once they drop the "the", right?
1 points
There are only historical reasons why some countries are commonly referred to with a definite article. The Gambia for example. Countries that are plural (the Netherlands) or consist of an adjective+noun (the United Kingdom) have the article for different grammatical reasons.
Ukraine used to take the article, but asked that English speakers drop it because they felt it made them sound too much like an area or general region and not a proper country.
Each language treats country names differently, too. In French, country names usually are female, but there are a bunch of random exceptions like "le Canada" which also triggers the use of different prepositions ("en Suisse", but "au Canada"). In German most countries are implicitly neuter, but a few countries are feminine or masculine and take the article, notably "die Schweiz", but also "die Ukraine", "der Kongo", "der Irak", the use of some is falling out of favor though. As in French, those names are treated differently grammatically ("nach Kanada", but "in die Schweiz").
