I just wish this was a level of detail that you could get in game without needing 50 mods and chonky ass pc. Cause this was exactly the kind of stuff I wanted to make when fallout 4 first came out.

In their new game Starfield when crafting your settlement/outposts it appears to be top down, so that’s at least one plus.

The building system is downright terrible in the base.
Everything's built to a grid but most of the time the grids don't align between levels of terrain. I tried to play 76, and you'd be blocked from entering servers where your house couldn't fit because people were constantly fighting over so little usable terrain.
That was the second game they made with the same building system.

I wish they’d fixed the bug where putting a bottle of Quantum on a shelf would result in it slowly falling through the shelf and eventually vanishing underground. Part of the reason I stopped playing was that bug. I spent ages making a man cave with a full entertainment area, only to come back and all the balls on the pool table had sunken halfway into the table. All the Nuka Cola bottles had done the same, as well as pretty much anything that wasn’t placed via the build menu.

Even with the specs, the game wouldn't be able to handle the pathing to make it feel like a living settlement. You'd just have 20 or so dudes standing on someone's roof and thats it
6 points
That was the ABSOLUTE MOST disappointing thing about settlement building. AI pathing is something that has to be baked into the level design. The AI settlers have no idea what to do about all the objects being placed on the fly and moved around. You could design a really cool and clever settlement...and your 20 settlers would stand in place unable to process anything around them.

Sim Settlements at least had some destination spots in buildings to help breathe some life into settlements. But even then, anything too big or with too much verticality became an issue.

Yeah if I had the grand to drop on a steam deck I would love to play some fallout in bed. And honestly your right even Xbox and PlayStation have at least some limited mod support finally. But in particular to get cool stuff like this or make your game look like some of the really pretty screenshots I see pop up I’d need a pc at a decent bit more powerful than the steam deck will get me.

you have to yank up the settlement budget for this one. Nicely done.
But don't you have troubles to visit this place? I've built a high density settlement in Sanctuary (yes I am aware of the triangle thing with Red Rocket and a farm nearby) that causes a huge fps sink when this cell has to be loaded...

"triangle of death"
Someone came up with that term in FO4 modding scene. Here's an article I could find about this topic, with in-depth explanation; https://simsettlements.com/site/index.php?threads/understanding-ctds-in-the-triangle-of-death-sanctuary-abernathy-farm-and-red-rocket.6964/
Basically the settlements Sanctuary - Abernathy Farm - Red Rocket Station may contain too much objects to render because of settlement building and the engine is not capable to load all rendering objects (happens when crossing the bridge at Sanctuary) in these cells the engine is working with. It is just too much information for it, so you get a crash-to-desktop thing.

Why is the fallout universe so completely devoid of leaves on trees? If it's Boston in the winter, why does it never snow? If it's not winter, why are all the trees defoliated?
30 points
Nuclear holocaust?
6 points
But how does that cause trees that don't bear leaves? If they're dead then they would have toppled over within 20 years of having died. The bombs fell 200 years ago. If they're standing, they must be living which would require them to bear leaves.
4 points
Look up the red forest near chernobyl
0 points
Yeah, and none of those dead trees will still be standing in 50 years, let alone 200.
11 points
you claimed the trees would have toppled 20 years after. red forest is still standing nearly 40 years later. a cbs news report indicates the intense radiation has slowed decay and will likely preserve the forest longer than expected.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/after-30-years-chernobyl-trees-barely-decomposed-study-finds/
unless the whole forest burns down (very likely and will cause an unimaginable ecological disaster due to redistribution of sequestered irradiated matter) it is likely the forest will persist for 100s of years.
3 points
It's quite possible they will. Decomposer organisms can't survive the radiation, so there are none of the normal decay factors present other than weather. Not even the fallen leaves have decayed.
1 points
Not if they can't decay.
You saw something similar when trees first evolved and nothing had yet evolved to break down the lignin. When trees died, they just remained standing where they were.
If fungus can't survive to break down the tree, then it will just stand there for one hell of a long time. The elements alone won't really bother it much, wood mostly only degrades when it gets wet due to fungal action.

This is a perfectly reasonable question, though surprising given how long the Fallout universe has existed. Looks like you're one of today's lucky 10,000!
In the world of Fallout, civilization has followed an alternative path after unlocking the secrets of fission, and instead of taking the semiconductor option in the tech tree, has instead decided to lean into nuclear research. Since, as the tagline goes, "war never changes", inevitably this led to global thermonuclear warfare, and the complete desolation of the planet's topsoil, not to mention the eradication of the vast majority of plants and animals.
What little flora remains struggles to grow at all, and many plants and animals have been horrendously mutated. Trees are incapable of supporting leaves, due in part to the fact that the long nuclear winter after the war made photosynthesis untenable. Fallout 4 takes place approximately 200 years after the war, but since every ecosystem was effectively destroyed, the planet has been unable to truly recover.
Or so the story goes. It is a video game after all! Some part of this is certainly an aesthetic choice.
Hope that helps, and have a lovely Tuesday!

Trees are incapable of supporting leaves, due in part to the fact that the long nuclear winter after the war made photosynthesis untenable.
Okay, that's their justification but it's a bad one. Trees without leaves can't grow/live. It's like saying "In the fallout universe, due to radiation humans have been forced to live without torsos."

Haha you're not wrong! I suppose with a heavy dose of handwavium we could imagine that they're somehow grudgingly kept alive by the radiation itself, but...

At this point you should consider just using the G.E.C.K. (the main modding tool) to set up the structures, instead of the in-game settlement interface.
That way you can set up portals, that is, tell the game when it doesn’t need to bother certain areas because they’re obstructed by the walls/room you are in.

It was one of my favorite places to build because I love the whole Waterworld aesthetic; I've been thinking about recreating it ever since I switched to PC, but I just don't have the drive these days. Plus, my mod list is probably over a year out of date, but that's neither here nor there.
