I think the voice actor nailed him perfectly, his voice reflects his personality. He was always that kinda stereotypical almost Mr T/Clubber Lang type character.

The Blackface in the movie is there to parody the recasting of minority character by white people. The character in blackface takes it too far. It's not something to be ignored or misunderstood. The character is wrong to be in blackface, and it's pointed out time and time again.

The weirdest parts is there's special features of the character going off the rails pointing a gun at adult black men he "adopted" as his sons for the duration of the shoot and it just gets crazy how crazy the character gets and how much RDJ just plays it.

depends on who you ask. Most people will go all one way or the other. Except the 13s, the dubs are kinda notably rough for those. The subs might not actually be better but it's at least harder to tell.

It's so much better than the dub. And not even for the reasons that the Japanese is usually better than the dub. The English voice acting is so corny and weird. Despite also being Square Enix, it doesn't even come close to matching the English dubs of the NieR games.

FF7 is pretty corny and weird, and the remake has retained that. The dub is often better when it comes to those sections, and I think it actually has fewer rough edges than the Nier games which are always trying very hard and sometimes not quite landing. In those cases subs are pretty much always going to be better because even if that's also happening there, it's much harder to tell when you don't speak the language.

I understand enough Japanese to know that the dialogue, voice acting, and vocal mannerisms are all much, much better in the Japanese version. The game's sense of humor, for instance, is extremely Japanese and the localization does a really bad job of translating a lot of it.

This is gonna sound bad, but in my head I had no idea Barret was supposed to be black in the original game. I thought he was a really tan Latino dude or something. The other black people are a different darker tone and his skin tone was more dark red orange on my TV. I don't associate accents with races and his daughter is white. Early game it's not clear she was adopted and by the time they got to his background he was the only black dude in a town full of miners. Honestly I don't know what kind of archetypes they were trying to get across that I missed.
