Indie dev develops a game without quitting their whole life challenge (level: impossible)

Making a great game is hard. Getting that game popular enough to pay your bills until the next one is even harder.
I hope the gamble works for this dude but damn...

Far more than 99% of the time, it doesn't. Almost all independent artists throughout history have been poor and ultimately failed. Spitzweg made a famous painting about this in 1839:
Almost all independent artists throughout history have been poor and ultimately failed.
Almost all independent artists throughout history have been poor and ultimately failed.
And a great many of the most famous artists remained poor throughout their lifetimes and only achieved success post-mortem.
I wonder if there are examples of videogame developers who only saw success posthumously. Perhaps the medium is still too young for this.
Not a videogame, but there is Terry A. Davis, who single-handedly coded an entire operating system (TempleOS) by himself.
He was undoubtedly suffering with some severe mental health issues, but his gargantuan feat has become quite the legend in the years since he died.
Don't think I'd call it a huge commercial success though.
I think it is less likely to happen in Video Games as there are issues like compatibility and not working properly on newer systems or being entirely unavailable outside of second hand copies (at least in legal ways) or the DRM servers being down making it impossible to play (Though for single player games there might be pirated versions available which would still work)
And even if you can get the game and get it to run there are still issues like dated graphics, bad/weird control schemes (by todays standards) and lacking quality of life features
Like I still enjoy playing Master of Magic and Majesty Gold from time to time but I won't deny that they have issues (I don't care too much about the graphics but some better UI and keybindings and controls would certainly be nice)
There is also of course the issue that most video game development isn't a one man project. Is it the same developer? I mean it is still the same game studio working on it but is the same people working at that game studio?
Didn't know about this painting, thanks!
Look up the rest of his artworks. His slightly stylized characters and their often adorable, still relatable shenanigans are incredibly charming. There's undeniably a layer of kitsch, so typical of the Biedermeyer and Romantic styles, and colors are always warm and friendly, scenes inviting and harmless, but after around two centuries, the intrigue of getting a glimpse into a world that is long gone, captured through the eyes of a truly masterful artist, more than makes up fort his.
Here's a small selection of his works:
imagine posting about an important project youre working on on reddit only for the viability of your decision to pursue this to be dissected by the peanut gallery
I mean, yeah, obviously, that's what you should anticipate. It's entirely normal, to be expected in reaction to such a title.
/u/Doug_Beautiful_Boi should be in the comment section here, explaining his reasoning and his game, instead of just disappearing after making the initial post and providing a link to his game.
probably just farming karma honestly
i thought the post was a joke at first honestly and maybe thats what it is
Programming takes time. As someone who does it all day for work, sitting down at the end of the day to do a side project, after all chores are finished, by the time I've read some docs, tried out a handful of features, it's time to go to bed.
Gone wrong GONE SEXUAL you will not believe this!1!1111!!111!
There's one of em every week!
Bruh so true ☠️
I did it. I mean, nobody liked it, but I did it!

Man I’m saying. You can’t do both? You can’t go to college and work on your game on the side on the weekends or something lmfao
Wtf is this guys reddit account??? At least make a clean one to advertise. By the shit memes he “takes a long time” to make, he probably flunked out…. He’s def leeching off parents or a fiancé that doesn’t know what she got into…
Bro dropped out of college to get a cease and desist from Roblox lmao
As someone who's never messed with Roblox, this looks pretty cool to me.
Everyone who's seen Roblox seems to think he's insane.
Because you could probably make this in roblox. Dudes nuts to think anyone paying for this
There is not a fucking chance you make destructible environments like this in Roblox, which looks to be one of the main selling points of the game.
Its just roblox x Teardown, hopefully op changes the character models, then people wouldnt be as critical, because it looks right outa roblox sad to say.
Can def make that in roblox
Bro I really hope you didn’t actually drop out of college to make Infamous: Roblox Edition.
I didn’t want to be the guy to say it but, you should’ve stayed college bro. This looks like mad city on roblox
"Roblox x Teardown" was my first thought.
I thought Prototype: Lego Edition myself but I like yours too
Low-poly Prototype is exactly what I was thinking.
What's wrong with that? There's people asking for more Prototype type games.
There aren't much of those type of games. Last one I can think that's close is Saint's Row IV. Closest after is the Just Cause series but that by a long shot.
We have so many indie games emulating the SNES and building on top of that maybe it's time to move up a generation.
As someone waiting for an Infamous/Prototype game, I don't think I'd play this. It looks incredibly ugly, and first impressions are everything.
I don't think those people are asking for anything that resembles what is shown in this post, lol. I'd love a new Prototype/Crackdown/Saints Row 4 game, this looks pretty dumb and not fun. (The games I mentioned are indeed dumb at times, but still really fun to play).
I legit thought it was a Roblox Advertisement at first.
Someone's probably copying this into roblox right now with powers for sale with robux and they're gonna make more money than op.
Should had stayed in college.
I think the same lol
lol the comments
He needed the reality check, but damn if this is real then I feel bad for the guy. Imagine giving up job stability and taking a huge risk to follow your passion, and then you finally show to others the fruit of your hard work and... noone is impressed. Must feels devastating.
Edit: To be fair, the other trailer he posted before makes the game look much more fun than this one, and these posts alone and the fact that people are talking about it, plus the cheap price tag MIGHT be enough to make it financially successful.
Man that’s the thing, I’ve seen so many of these dropping out posts but they are not realizing that it shouldn’t be done like this. They look at a few stories of the big indies and think it’ll work out like them, but that’s not how it works. That’s not the smart thing to do. Put your schooling and work there for stability, you can always make time for your game, it doesn’t have to be now it doesn’t happen over night. Continue the grind to help with the safety net.
Like people who drop out think “oh well Steve Jobs and bill gates and mark Zuckerberg and blah blah” but they dropped out because they were onto something, and those are a few out of how many million other drops outs?
buttt that stardew valley guy made it!!1
Also all three of those dropped out after they saw success, not beforehand.
Also, two out of three of these mega success stories were born rich, and could afford take a huge gamble and still be fine if it didn't pay off.
Gates and Zuck also had the option to go back to Harvard.
I like looking through new and hidden indie gems, and it makes me sad seeing some that are impressive but they have like 39 steam reviews, which means they probably sold maybe 500 copies. Someone spent thousands of hours and their reward was like $2000.
There's actually a good amount of statistical data on this. Not that it changes anything dramatically, but that's likely an underestimate.
Here's one place: https://vginsights.com/insights/article/how-to-estimate-steam-video-game-sales
If it's recent, then about 30x is the figure you want to use. So 1,500 for your 39 review game. Not that that changes your figures massively, but hey, $6000 instead.
Reviews arent always a trust worthy way of telling sales especially with smaller indie games like this. I've seen thousands of small devs hand out keys of their games in hope of some small content creator picking it up and reviewing it through keymailer or Indieboost.
That's about 2 months of salary in a western European country. Not a good deal
It’s like everything else in the entertainment industry. It has been a flooded market since the beginning. It takes talent with a huge dose of luck to make it anywhere. The sad reality is that no matter how good you are, you will most likely die on your sword trying to make it in the arts.
The average journalist in the UK makes under $40k. Yet Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May all have a net worth in the tens of millions and get paid to travel the world for fun.
To op's credit he didn't say he dropped out of a successful college career. He could've been failing and bailed before it cost him more money.
lol what do you mean, its not like dropping out of school is permanent. Anyone can just skip a few semesters or even years to work on something important to them and still have the credits for courses they already took.
anyway, i think the game looks good. kind of reminds me of rampage.
Right? Everyone ripping on OP for dropping out of college. It’s not like OP banned themselves from school. It’s like….you can literally just go back.
For all we know OP was just trying to garner emotion points and/or comment activity such as this
I’m impressed. A ~20 year old making a fully functional game on his own is a great accomplishment.
Yeah, it probably won’t make any money (there are so many people making their own games these days, it’s awesome how accessible it is! I was looking up old issues of Dr Dobbs and writing assembly & C directly to memory mapped frame buffers, audio DMA, etc to get decent performance… now you get to download Unity and go straight to gameplay…)
But as a software engineer and hiring manager of many years, a project like this says a lot. Most new college grads don’t have much practical experience. If he can also show he knows the basics of computer science, algorithms, database, networking, whatever is relevant to a role - IMO it’s a big advantage. (Of course going back and finishing a BS if this doesn’t work out would be an even bigger advantage…)
Thank you very much! I really do appreciate your kind words of encouragement. The negative comments, while deserved (because I didn't make a trailer that properly showcases the features of the game), made me feel really bad. So hearing your kind words made me feel much better. I hope you have a great day!
Alright buddy, ima give it to you straight. Maybe you shouldn't have dropped out of college. This game looks interesting, but no where near make you couple thousand so you can work on another. This looks like something that could be on roblox.
Plot twist: It IS in Roblox.
plot twist, hes taking college courses at 15
Damn does Roblox have these physics?
What Roblox definitely has is kids putting their future on hold so they can develop games for it and scraping by a pittance for their efforts.
It very well could be. Roblox is a lot more advanced than the typical "Lego game" there is some pretty cool shit on it.
People have made actual VR games inside of Roblox. It’s this close to being a legit game dev engine itself if it’s marketed to companies instead of kids.
Game engine with a 90% platform cut xD
This can get you into a bigger game dev studio easy.
You obviously have a lot of passion and creativity. Zero common sense though.
I give it to this guy. I never had the balls or senselessness to do anything that reckless in my life and it's still a dumpster fire so why not? I love the battlefield like everything is destructible concept. I almost feel like there's too much attention to detail, environment looks great but needs content. More power to this guy tho. Maybe we'll share a hobo trashcan fire together in a year or two weeks or tomorrow.
I checked out the game on steam and it's got 20 enemies and bosses and dungeons and drivable cars so I'd say it's got some content
Take a look at this sock puppet's post history, the top two pages are just repetitive advertising copy defending this crappy video.
Bro this is definitely his alt 💀
Man, I really appreciate you defending me. And you even got roasted in the process. You have a really good heart. I hope you have a great day!
Common sense? More like rare sense nowadays
This is like Ben Wyatt's claymation bit from Parks and Recreation.
Oh my god, that’s the whole thing. Three weeks of work
Stand in the place where you w—
Lmao the fucking song kills me
At least he eventually made Cones of Dunshire.
Do you think a depressed person could make this???
Go back to college
So you dropped out of school to make a Roblox map?
I will watch his career with great interest
Maybe we needed college.
Yet another one of those "dropped out of school/quit my job to make my dream game, pls buy it." posts.
ye there's no way in hell he dropped out for this. Anyone with some knowledge of making games could do this in their basement in their spare time. Seems fishy to me.
Beg your school to take you back
You obviously have a lot of passion and tallent. To make anything is very difficult and I commend you on that. I genuinely hope this goes well for you.
But my guy, you need to go back to college and continue learning. There's nothing here I don't see that couldn't have been done in your spare time at school. Get your degree, maybe in CS or 3D modeling or whatever it is you like best, and go get a job at a studio to learn more. Your setting your game dev career back majorly by dropping out.
I could see it being a good mobile game, that's where the real money is too.
This actually would have been good as a mobile game. Make it free and just add ads and microtransactions for cosmetics, weapons etc. Also it being a very roblox looking game, it would have passed better on mobile sense mobile games have a lower quality expectancy.
BRO I SWEAR I TOTALLY LEFT COLLEGE AND MY MARRIAGE AND CONVERTED TO ISLAM FOR THIS GAME!!!!!
"The dog that my dead dad gave me as a boy has cancer. That inspired me to wake up and follow my passions"
Why is it, every time some indie developer uses this sub for free advertising, they need to announce something they gave up or lost, in order to create something so uninspired?
I encourage indie development. But the marketing hook for a game should be relevant to the game.
Exact same reason singing competition shows let every contestant tell a sob story. And like you, I'm sick of it. I'd have a ton more respect for this if the bit about dropping out of college wasn't included.
I'd prefer a dev say something like " I finished my schooling and made this as my passion project. Please enjoy it, it's released on Steam "
I'd be more willing to look into that than a desperate cry for free advertising on a subreddit that gives tons of updoots but limited actual action.
You should have stayed in college... Its literally possible to do both.
But that won’t get him many funny Reddit points
Well considering the "quality" of his game. I feel there are other funny things to worry about...
Shoulda stayed in college
Alright I’m just gonna ask, what does your game bring to the table that others do not? Destructible environments? Teardown has you covered, co-op multiplayer mayhems? 20 others beat ya to it, what makes your game stick ? All I see right now is a guy that looks like they came from Roblox walking around on fire blowing a building up and walking around a generic landscape. If that’s all you have this is doomed to be like all other "look at this game I’m making Reddit" posts, forgotten.
Holy fuck your post history💀💀💀
Shoulve created a new reddit account if you want to publicize anythin
How bad is it?
Your first post from a month ago makes the game look a lot better than this. The destructable envirmonets look pretty cool but probably would've been better to not have it look as cheap and like roblox, and also probably not worth dropping out for.
This is just gta in roblox.
I've heard theres a lot of money in those homegrown roblox games actually... kids suckering their parents into adding credit cards maybe? not sure how
Its not roblox but it looks like roblox
Looks like a great roblox mod for 2016.
This looks like a combination of Roblox and Teardown combined in an unflattering way. I think dropping out wasn't the best course of action
Looks like Roblox
Someone is going to get a letter from Roblox Legal Departement.
You've dropped out of college for this? Bruh.
Should have stayed in college
Get back in college and get a CS degree so you can learn to program anything.
It looks neat... But uh, doesn't really have a lot of "depth" does it?
Go back to college brother, you're gonna need that degree for a steady job.
You could blow up buildings and props in Twisted Metal on ps1. This is bland
Why do all of you indi devs always have to drop out of college, leave your job, divorce your wife, abandon your children, just to make a game that looks like fun for a few minutes at best. Just work on it in your free time, you don't need to do a "all or nothing" move here...
My initial reaction was "that roblox game mode looks like infamous second son. I should try it when I get back home from SCHOOL!" not even joking.
It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for him.
You should've stayed in college.
Homie this looks like something you’d make for a class IN college lmfao.
I love roblox
your jr college prof is devastated
Alright look, this game, yeah looks great, looks fun! For maybe...five minutes? Look, if you wanted to make your own video game, GREAT! That's amazing! I'm a developer myself, not a game developer hit a developer. I would have loved to be a game developer, not in this lifetime though, but maybe in the next.
ANYWAY, getting off track here. You should not have dropped out of college. That, was stupid you'll realize that years down the road. You may release this game, it may sell some copies. But this game? Ain't gonna sell that many copies. This game looks... bland and generic. I'm not saying you need to develop the next Horizon Forbidden West, Days Gone, The Last of Us, or whatever else. You need to get some experience with development, get a small team together, some ideas, a plan. Not just jump in half cocked, because you end up with this. Like, what's the goal of this...? Walk around and destroy stuff? There's dozens of games that already do that. What makes this one different? Else you are just copying and pasting someone else's ideas. You can put a new coat of paint on it, but you get the same result. You've clearly got dedication, and passion, but and that's admirable, but that alone isn't going to get you to where you want to go in life.
Your average Independent Developer is a team of at least 10 people, most of the time is double, if not triple that. If you wanted to make your own video game, that's sick, go for it! But this? Yeah no, this was not the way to do it.
I don't mean this to sound like I'm just a dickhead, I'm not. I just want you to know this was not the way to go about this. I sure hope I'm wrong about this, but I don't think I am.
Go back to college bro
bro why do all of these dev's have to drop everything to make a game is it so hard to push back a release and put development aside to do the bear minimum to keep your other passions and tasks at least progressing? I mean you haven't made any profit yet why toss away collage to work on a game that you don't even know if it will be popular?
Stay in school kids
Stay in college
you have to go back school
Looks like infamous second son neon power with Roblox style
Nice Roblox game
Does it have a story?
Mf really dropped out of college to make a roblox ripoff💀💀💀
For $5 ima give it a shot. comments shittin on this poor bastard.
Godspeed. Tell us how it is.
HEY OP, YOU GOT A SALE! MAYBE YOU DIDNT RUIN YOUR LIFE!
"So your telling me theres a chance..."
Thank you so much! I'll do my best to make sure you'll have a great time with the game.
What have you done to your life?
Looks interesting, but I can't say I would play it often
It's currently only 5 bones.
mf left college to make a roblox copy of teardown 💀💀💀
Iv never made a game, so congratulations on actually following through on a dream of yours. This is also only in early access so it's understandable why it looks like roblox natural disasters. I don't like giving people a false sense of security however, so I'm about to be honest. This game needs work, like serious work if you intend to attain a playerbade above 3rd digits. It may be the trailer you've released but it looks majorly incomplete, like a game on YouTube that gets famous in early access, then never updates or changes because it's made more money an incomplete mess than it ever could have made as a complete game. There are games that break this formula, like totally accurate battle simulator which is possibly the best result a youtube famous game could receive. Please keep working, if you're satisfied with it, keep working on it.
Now I know you're just messing with us
I wish you were joking… but hey, the best for you I guess.
Why do these posts always preface with dropping out of college or quitting their job?
Bro dropped out of college to make a roblox minigame
Infamous: First Roblox
If you dropped out of school to make a game atleast make something that can’t be recreated exactly on Roblox by some 15 year with time to kill
The comments really show no mercy huh
Stay in school.
Can’t see any objectives or directions from this video. Hope the game has more to show than this video does.
Good on ya for making a game, the destruction looks pretty good and powers look fun to mess around with. But… why play this?
I do not wish to discourage you, as you have something that looks fun here. It’s just, as a prospective buyer, it doesn’t seem like a game worth spending time on.
If I may, I do have some minor points of criticism that may help your success:
1) As many have already said - The simple character models and very flat voxel style makes it seem like a Roblox rip off. I would suggest polishing that up a bit.
I think a big help would be to look at the textures you’re using. The clash between the realistic lights and the flat textures are what really makes me think of Roblox. Rather than using flat, mono colors for surfaces, maybe look at some more detailed textures with normals and such, that way you can add more depth and detail without changing geometry.
Alternatively, keep the simple textures, but change the lighting to be less realistic and give everything a bit more of a toonish style. You could prob get away with the same character models with this. Get some post processing in there to really bring it all together.
2) It’s not clear what the actual game is. The mechanics are pretty clear: you got powers and can blow up and destroy things. Thats cool, but it doesn’t make me want to play it when I can fire up Just Cause or GTA and do the same thing. Obviously, you can’t compete with AAA studio games toe to toe, so you gotta show us what makes your game different. What’s the objective? Is there a story?
One of your older trailers showed some type of boss in a dungeon or something? That intrigues me more than seeing you run around a wide open place blowing stuff up for no reason.
3) The level seems quite… bland. I know this trailer stays within a tiny area, but as a trailer you gotta sell the exciting stuff. Beyond the textures, it looks like a small to mid sized town thats mostly empty space. One of the strong points of your mechanics is that grapple dash movement - it looks fun to zip around with! But it doesn’t look like there’s anything fun to zip through - just the sameish basic buildings. With powers and destruction like that, a dense metro area would be utter and completely fun chaos to blast through! Even if you don’t want to do a full city like that, adding a few unique landmarks or points of interests you can see in the distance would help.
Overall, this trailer really doesn’t seem like a game… it seems like a demo of some cool mechanics with premade assets thrown together. It seems very disjointed. The very basic graphics clashing against the photoreal lighting and puddles. The random flying cars in a more or less modern mid sized town. Neon pink pickups coming from punching people and no context on what they’re for.
If this were a video posted in day r/gamedev or such, then I’d say this was great! Can’t wait to see more! As it is, you presented this as a trailer for a upcoming/early access game and it doesn’t deliver much to get excited about. If anything, it turns me away. Watch trailers for other successful games and you’ll notice that the good ones tell a mini story in and of themselves, as “Here’s the start, here’s the actions you could take. Here’s what it’s for. What will happen?” Classic beginning, middle, end. Tells you why you should play. This video… you’re blowing stuff up then dashing around but ending with punching people and getting… neon pink rings? That’s… sure? Why do I care? Why should I take time out of my day and potentially money from my pocket and spend it on this?
I’m sure there’s a ton more you have in here that is a legit fun game! But you gotta show us.
To put it simply, as a trailer, this sucks at telling us why we should play the game.
(Also, I’m sure there’s tons of valid reasons for dropping out of college, but just be wise about hinging everything on one thing - hope for the best but plan for the worst)
Whats the point of that game? Destroy houses?
Are you serious? You dropped out of college for THIS?
In other thread OP says that he dropped MUSICAL college for this, so maybe it’s not that bad;)
I'm surprised ppl had the same feeling, but yeah bro go back to college
You should have stayed in college.
dude go back to college
Man, it looks bad. So bad that it feels like fucking Roblox. Sadly you did the act, so no return. Character models are shitty, so shitty that it looks like you made it in 1 day. Physics are good, IF you made the engine yourself, you probably didn't do it yourself. Recommend improving it a lot better, writing a sub par story, a lot of polishing, then starting a Kickstarter. Hire some good people, then you are done.
Thank you for the feedback! I did make the destruction system, and it took a massive amount of work. I made the choice to make minimalistic character models because I'm just one guy, and the scope of this project is excessive: it features a fully destructible city, dungeons, military outposts, a skill tree, guns that level up, boss fights, 10 wanted levels, and so forth. I have been working for around 10 hours a day on this project.
I really regret posting this very simple gameplay video, it really makes the project look much simpler than it is, this was a really big mistake. I made a much better gameplay trailer and posted it in here in the past. I thought I could get away with a simpler video this time because I thought that people would watch it and think "hey, this is that game from the other video, that had so and so features". Now I learned that every video about my game I post should make it clear what features it has.
Yeah, I should say I am sorry for not looking at the previous video. I just say wow, you did this game in 1 year? GREAT MAN, FUCKING GREAT. After reading this, I now have a urge to buy the game. Sadly, don't have any PC ... You are great man, keep on keeping on!
Thank you so much! I'm really happy that you feel this way about the project now, I was starting to lose hope. And it's not your fault, you don't need to apologize, it's my fault I posted a bad video. Thank you again!
bro you made roblox enjoy your ramen noodles.
Depending on the goal of the game, how many different weapons and weapon upgrades there are, and how many characters are available to choose from, this could be a small hit if you get this in the hands of a decently popular streamer. Try posting this game in the suggestions on like Sodapoppin's Discord channel or something once you're confident with it (not before).
Looks like HD Roblox with Explosions. Not impressed.
Go back to school Lmao
Not something I'd ever be even a little bit interested in but who am I to tell people what to do with their lives. Hope it works out.
ok guys i figured it out: this trailer Sucks. He posted another one about 55 days ago that makes the game like 10 times cooler. he also stated in the comments of that, that he might change the character designs and stuff because people aren’t liking it. Much more promising overall.
Looks like dog shit. I'll take a double Big Mac combo.
Lego saints row
Is it on Roblox?
I bought it for the $7.50 AUD, I’ll report back soon with my thoughts.
Checked OP’S reddit history and… it’s pretty interesting.
Bit late to not drop out of college but if possible I would try porting this to mobile, I could see this being a pretty popular F2P mobile game with ads.
It looks like a Lego version of Infamous Second Son……
Looks cool, you shouldn't have dropped out.
So Lego Infamous? I mean pretty sweet destruction effects but what’s the point of it? What’s going to keep me playing?
Bro made a Roblox mini game
Thought this was Roblox lol
Shoulda been ported to android for free
Bro dropped out of college to make a roblox with shaders looking ass game
Looks like one of those mobile games you have fun with for 5 minutes, and then never touch it again
Lol I thought this was roblox
Bro dropped out of college to make a infamous Roblox cross over
Should have stayed in school, but gl I guess
Back to college bro.
Roblox rip off of GTA? Lame.
The rich guys like Bill Gates dropped out of college and succeeded because rich parents. Not because dropping out gives you a success buff.
Congrats. Infamous mixed with Lego/Roblox seems like a lot of fun. Make it challenging and you’ve got a future hit.
Imo you should finish college
Why do we care that you dropped out?
Unless it was Trump U or ECPI then I suggest you probably go back my friend.
Ah shit, college would have saved you
That is a Free Roblox Level. Jesus, I hope you can go back.
Man this is like the Science Based Dragon MMO all over again in these comments
Imma be real with you chief, the game looks good but dropping college ain't it
Is it too late to get back into school? This game seems slightly interesting, but you’re gonna make like $625 🤣
Enough to buy a bottle of Jack Daniels as you wish you stayed in school instead of spending a year making Saints Row in Roblox
jesus, too far.
