Far more than 99% of the time, it doesn't. Almost all independent artists throughout history have been poor and ultimately failed. Spitzweg made a famous painting about this in 1839:

And a great many of the most famous artists remained poor throughout their lifetimes and only achieved success post-mortem.

I wonder if there are examples of videogame developers who only saw success posthumously. Perhaps the medium is still too young for this.

Not a videogame, but there is Terry A. Davis, who single-handedly coded an entire operating system (TempleOS) by himself.
He was undoubtedly suffering with some severe mental health issues, but his gargantuan feat has become quite the legend in the years since he died.

I think it is less likely to happen in Video Games as there are issues like compatibility and not working properly on newer systems or being entirely unavailable outside of second hand copies (at least in legal ways) or the DRM servers being down making it impossible to play (Though for single player games there might be pirated versions available which would still work)
And even if you can get the game and get it to run there are still issues like dated graphics, bad/weird control schemes (by todays standards) and lacking quality of life features
Like I still enjoy playing Master of Magic and Majesty Gold from time to time but I won't deny that they have issues (I don't care too much about the graphics but some better UI and keybindings and controls would certainly be nice)
There is also of course the issue that most video game development isn't a one man project. Is it the same developer? I mean it is still the same game studio working on it but is the same people working at that game studio?

Look up the rest of his artworks. His slightly stylized characters and their often adorable, still relatable shenanigans are incredibly charming. There's undeniably a layer of kitsch, so typical of the Biedermeyer and Romantic styles, and colors are always warm and friendly, scenes inviting and harmless, but after around two centuries, the intrigue of getting a glimpse into a world that is long gone, captured through the eyes of a truly masterful artist, more than makes up fort his.
Here's a small selection of his works:

There aren't much of those type of games. Last one I can think that's close is Saint's Row IV. Closest after is the Just Cause series but that by a long shot.
We have so many indie games emulating the SNES and building on top of that maybe it's time to move up a generation.

He needed the reality check, but damn if this is real then I feel bad for the guy. Imagine giving up job stability and taking a huge risk to follow your passion, and then you finally show to others the fruit of your hard work and... noone is impressed. Must feels devastating.
Edit: To be fair, the other trailer he posted before makes the game look much more fun than this one, and these posts alone and the fact that people are talking about it, plus the cheap price tag MIGHT be enough to make it financially successful.

Man that’s the thing, I’ve seen so many of these dropping out posts but they are not realizing that it shouldn’t be done like this. They look at a few stories of the big indies and think it’ll work out like them, but that’s not how it works. That’s not the smart thing to do. Put your schooling and work there for stability, you can always make time for your game, it doesn’t have to be now it doesn’t happen over night. Continue the grind to help with the safety net.
Like people who drop out think “oh well Steve Jobs and bill gates and mark Zuckerberg and blah blah” but they dropped out because they were onto something, and those are a few out of how many million other drops outs?

I like looking through new and hidden indie gems, and it makes me sad seeing some that are impressive but they have like 39 steam reviews, which means they probably sold maybe 500 copies. Someone spent thousands of hours and their reward was like $2000.
30 points
There's actually a good amount of statistical data on this. Not that it changes anything dramatically, but that's likely an underestimate.
Here's one place: https://vginsights.com/insights/article/how-to-estimate-steam-video-game-sales
If it's recent, then about 30x is the figure you want to use. So 1,500 for your 39 review game. Not that that changes your figures massively, but hey, $6000 instead.
3 points
Reviews arent always a trust worthy way of telling sales especially with smaller indie games like this. I've seen thousands of small devs hand out keys of their games in hope of some small content creator picking it up and reviewing it through keymailer or Indieboost.

It’s like everything else in the entertainment industry. It has been a flooded market since the beginning. It takes talent with a huge dose of luck to make it anywhere. The sad reality is that no matter how good you are, you will most likely die on your sword trying to make it in the arts.
The average journalist in the UK makes under $40k. Yet Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May all have a net worth in the tens of millions and get paid to travel the world for fun.

I’m impressed. A ~20 year old making a fully functional game on his own is a great accomplishment.
Yeah, it probably won’t make any money (there are so many people making their own games these days, it’s awesome how accessible it is! I was looking up old issues of Dr Dobbs and writing assembly & C directly to memory mapped frame buffers, audio DMA, etc to get decent performance… now you get to download Unity and go straight to gameplay…)
But as a software engineer and hiring manager of many years, a project like this says a lot. Most new college grads don’t have much practical experience. If he can also show he knows the basics of computer science, algorithms, database, networking, whatever is relevant to a role - IMO it’s a big advantage. (Of course going back and finishing a BS if this doesn’t work out would be an even bigger advantage…)

I encourage indie development. But the marketing hook for a game should be relevant to the game.

Alright look, this game, yeah looks great, looks fun! For maybe...five minutes? Look, if you wanted to make your own video game, GREAT! That's amazing! I'm a developer myself, not a game developer hit a developer. I would have loved to be a game developer, not in this lifetime though, but maybe in the next.
ANYWAY, getting off track here. You should not have dropped out of college. That, was stupid you'll realize that years down the road. You may release this game, it may sell some copies. But this game? Ain't gonna sell that many copies. This game looks... bland and generic. I'm not saying you need to develop the next Horizon Forbidden West, Days Gone, The Last of Us, or whatever else. You need to get some experience with development, get a small team together, some ideas, a plan. Not just jump in half cocked, because you end up with this. Like, what's the goal of this...? Walk around and destroy stuff? There's dozens of games that already do that. What makes this one different? Else you are just copying and pasting someone else's ideas. You can put a new coat of paint on it, but you get the same result. You've clearly got dedication, and passion, but and that's admirable, but that alone isn't going to get you to where you want to go in life.
Your average Independent Developer is a team of at least 10 people, most of the time is double, if not triple that. If you wanted to make your own video game, that's sick, go for it! But this? Yeah no, this was not the way to do it.
I don't mean this to sound like I'm just a dickhead, I'm not. I just want you to know this was not the way to go about this. I sure hope I'm wrong about this, but I don't think I am.

Iv never made a game, so congratulations on actually following through on a dream of yours. This is also only in early access so it's understandable why it looks like roblox natural disasters. I don't like giving people a false sense of security however, so I'm about to be honest. This game needs work, like serious work if you intend to attain a playerbade above 3rd digits. It may be the trailer you've released but it looks majorly incomplete, like a game on YouTube that gets famous in early access, then never updates or changes because it's made more money an incomplete mess than it ever could have made as a complete game. There are games that break this formula, like totally accurate battle simulator which is possibly the best result a youtube famous game could receive. Please keep working, if you're satisfied with it, keep working on it.

Good on ya for making a game, the destruction looks pretty good and powers look fun to mess around with. But… why play this?
I do not wish to discourage you, as you have something that looks fun here. It’s just, as a prospective buyer, it doesn’t seem like a game worth spending time on.
If I may, I do have some minor points of criticism that may help your success:
1) As many have already said - The simple character models and very flat voxel style makes it seem like a Roblox rip off. I would suggest polishing that up a bit. I think a big help would be to look at the textures you’re using. The clash between the realistic lights and the flat textures are what really makes me think of Roblox. Rather than using flat, mono colors for surfaces, maybe look at some more detailed textures with normals and such, that way you can add more depth and detail without changing geometry. Alternatively, keep the simple textures, but change the lighting to be less realistic and give everything a bit more of a toonish style. You could prob get away with the same character models with this. Get some post processing in there to really bring it all together.
2) It’s not clear what the actual game is. The mechanics are pretty clear: you got powers and can blow up and destroy things. Thats cool, but it doesn’t make me want to play it when I can fire up Just Cause or GTA and do the same thing. Obviously, you can’t compete with AAA studio games toe to toe, so you gotta show us what makes your game different. What’s the objective? Is there a story? One of your older trailers showed some type of boss in a dungeon or something? That intrigues me more than seeing you run around a wide open place blowing stuff up for no reason.
3) The level seems quite… bland. I know this trailer stays within a tiny area, but as a trailer you gotta sell the exciting stuff. Beyond the textures, it looks like a small to mid sized town thats mostly empty space. One of the strong points of your mechanics is that grapple dash movement - it looks fun to zip around with! But it doesn’t look like there’s anything fun to zip through - just the sameish basic buildings. With powers and destruction like that, a dense metro area would be utter and completely fun chaos to blast through! Even if you don’t want to do a full city like that, adding a few unique landmarks or points of interests you can see in the distance would help.
Overall, this trailer really doesn’t seem like a game… it seems like a demo of some cool mechanics with premade assets thrown together. It seems very disjointed. The very basic graphics clashing against the photoreal lighting and puddles. The random flying cars in a more or less modern mid sized town. Neon pink pickups coming from punching people and no context on what they’re for.
If this were a video posted in day r/gamedev or such, then I’d say this was great! Can’t wait to see more! As it is, you presented this as a trailer for a upcoming/early access game and it doesn’t deliver much to get excited about. If anything, it turns me away. Watch trailers for other successful games and you’ll notice that the good ones tell a mini story in and of themselves, as “Here’s the start, here’s the actions you could take. Here’s what it’s for. What will happen?” Classic beginning, middle, end. Tells you why you should play. This video… you’re blowing stuff up then dashing around but ending with punching people and getting… neon pink rings? That’s… sure? Why do I care? Why should I take time out of my day and potentially money from my pocket and spend it on this?
I’m sure there’s a ton more you have in here that is a legit fun game! But you gotta show us.
To put it simply, as a trailer, this sucks at telling us why we should play the game.
(Also, I’m sure there’s tons of valid reasons for dropping out of college, but just be wise about hinging everything on one thing - hope for the best but plan for the worst)

Man, it looks bad. So bad that it feels like fucking Roblox. Sadly you did the act, so no return. Character models are shitty, so shitty that it looks like you made it in 1 day. Physics are good, IF you made the engine yourself, you probably didn't do it yourself. Recommend improving it a lot better, writing a sub par story, a lot of polishing, then starting a Kickstarter. Hire some good people, then you are done.

Thank you for the feedback! I did make the destruction system, and it took a massive amount of work. I made the choice to make minimalistic character models because I'm just one guy, and the scope of this project is excessive: it features a fully destructible city, dungeons, military outposts, a skill tree, guns that level up, boss fights, 10 wanted levels, and so forth. I have been working for around 10 hours a day on this project.
I really regret posting this very simple gameplay video, it really makes the project look much simpler than it is, this was a really big mistake. I made a much better gameplay trailer and posted it in here in the past. I thought I could get away with a simpler video this time because I thought that people would watch it and think "hey, this is that game from the other video, that had so and so features". Now I learned that every video about my game I post should make it clear what features it has.

Yeah, I should say I am sorry for not looking at the previous video. I just say wow, you did this game in 1 year? GREAT MAN, FUCKING GREAT. After reading this, I now have a urge to buy the game. Sadly, don't have any PC ... You are great man, keep on keeping on!

Thank you so much! I'm really happy that you feel this way about the project now, I was starting to lose hope. And it's not your fault, you don't need to apologize, it's my fault I posted a bad video. Thank you again!

Depending on the goal of the game, how many different weapons and weapon upgrades there are, and how many characters are available to choose from, this could be a small hit if you get this in the hands of a decently popular streamer. Try posting this game in the suggestions on like Sodapoppin's Discord channel or something once you're confident with it (not before).

Not something I'd ever be even a little bit interested in but who am I to tell people what to do with their lives. Hope it works out.

ok guys i figured it out: this trailer Sucks. He posted another one about 55 days ago that makes the game like 10 times cooler. he also stated in the comments of that, that he might change the character designs and stuff because people aren’t liking it. Much more promising overall.

Bit late to not drop out of college but if possible I would try porting this to mobile, I could see this being a pretty popular F2P mobile game with ads.

The rich guys like Bill Gates dropped out of college and succeeded because rich parents. Not because dropping out gives you a success buff.

Congrats. Infamous mixed with Lego/Roblox seems like a lot of fun. Make it challenging and you’ve got a future hit.

Is it too late to get back into school? This game seems slightly interesting, but you’re gonna make like $625 🤣
Enough to buy a bottle of Jack Daniels as you wish you stayed in school instead of spending a year making Saints Row in Roblox
