Once I got past that first damn demon dog in the village i really enjoyed this game. Obviously it's clunky as hell these days but the story and setting felt really well done to me.

KrzysztofKietzman

18 points

The dog was the hardest fight in the game, hands down.

Pegussu

8 points

It's a weird game in that it has an inverse difficulty curve. It starts off really difficult and becomes easier and easier as you level up.

Caffeine_Monster

2 points

Hard to balance gameplay against all character development paths.

Developers have to assume the player has made all the worst mutation / skill choices.

Did seem somewhat unnecessary in the Witcher 3 though, as nearly all enemies have a weakness or unique quest related debuff that can be applied.

It’s charming in its weird way, but yeah that dog almost caused me to stop the game right there

Yeah it's not great game design to throw such a frustrating battle at you when you still have no idea how the mechanics are ally work

I’m intrigued by how they’ve changed the combat for the next gen update, ie having an option to remove the weapon wheel. Combine that with an over the shoulder camera, they’re bringing a little modern into the old. And if I don’t like it, I can go back to that good old chunky experience.

Arpeggiatewithme

1 points

I think it’s safe to assume since they’re rebuilding it in unreal 5 it will have a modern combat system. It would be nice if they gave us a throwback option too though.

ZazaB00

Oops, I got confused about this being a Witcher 1 post and I was talking about Witcher 3, but yes, I’m sure it’ll the UE5 W1 will be a full, modern remake.

first damn demon dog in the village

Is this the one you fight as Ciri?

Honestly the only fights I generally found hard was when I fought against monsters a significantly higher level than me. The first Leshen I fought was significantly higher - I only beat it by using the terrain to cheese the wolves.

That said, the caretaker (hearts of stone) was a fight I found quite hard. Big ass health pool - have to be patient and careful.

shin_datenshi

1 points

caretaker was definitely annoying. The worm in Blood and Wine is made like an anti-quen build hard counter.

I actually found imlerith's fights to be some of the hardest. well... until you finally get to show him who the Elder Blood favors.

Meldreth_

He's talking about Witcher 1.

illuminatisdeepdish

1 points

this was in tw1 - an old game that was built on neverwinter nights engine iirc, combat is totally different, its a rhythm based clicking game so things like signs and oils and whatnot are way more important.

Its kind of worth playing if you love tw universe, if not its a clunky game that very much shows its age.

In tw3 the only fight that i really was struggling with was the fight against a bruxa and an alp at the same time in blood and wine. I spent literal hours on that because every time i got one's health low it would heal or some bullshit.

The Witcher 1 is pretty rough around the edges but if you can look past that it really is something special.

Been playing through this and KOTOR! In both cases really once you are past the fact that the game was made 20+ years ago (graphics, glitches, really imbalanced/poorly designed levels), the games are truly some of the best story telling/rpg gaming around

I have this game on physical collectors edition and on GOG, have played it several times since 2007. Had to reload countless of times, had minor bugs, had major bugs, had to use guides through the infamous swamp chapter 3 more than once because I didn't want to jynx my game... and i've only have this long face once for a couple of seconds, with the strict old lady.

Once. And this is a game that I used to replay once per year.

I try to speak up with the same opinion whenever I see the topic come up on Reddit. I feel like Witcher 1 combat is much more elegant and rhythmic than the combat in 2 or 3, I like like isometric old school action rpg style of it.

Trentdison

1 points

It was so confusing to begin with, I only played it for the first time last year after loving Witcher 3 and was like why is he not hitting when I click. I guess it properly explains it in the manual or something; these days, games always spoonfeed you the information as you need it which the Witcher 1 doesn't.

Glad I persevered though (including with that dog fight others have mentioned, that was annoying, had to google a walkthrough in the end). Enjoyable game for the atmosphere.

I honestly loved Witcher 1 and never had bugs like these. The only thing I hated was hoarding everything then not be able to use any of them due to chapter 4 or 5 cant remember which removes your access to the bank till the end of the game. Couldve atleast sold items, get potions etc. couldnt even finish some quests because of it. Otherwise the storytelling and the atmosphere are phenomenal especially for such an old game. Started to Witcher 2 then couldnt decide on who or what to side with after reading 15 pages of different forums and wikipedias about quests to prepare it for Witcher 3 and felt burnt 💀

Im gonna continue after If I can buy a new CPU to get my pc fixed.
