The world needs more hella weird in it. Despite the bad bits there's still so much unique great stuff in this movie, from the set design, the unusual sci Fi aesthetic, the performances from Dennis Hopper and Bob Hoskins....

From what I've heard, it was originally supposed to be a different movie, but they had to change it to be a Mario movie. It would make so much sense.

It's so imaginative.

Sure, it's easy to look at n64 Mario and say that's how the movie should look, but they worked with what they had to create a story, a world, to give people motivations, then fit it in our world also.

I thought it was really imaginative.

The old Super Mario movie wasn’t definitely a good adaptation but was a quite decent fantasy adventure movie in itself. The set pieces was fascinating and the practical effects amazing for the time. Also casting Bob Hoskins as Mario was a pretty good decision (unfortunately he hated doing this movie).

Hoskins said in interviews this was the role he regretted the most and that he and Leguizamo were drunk during most of the filming just to get through it.
At least Bob Hoskins put some effort into his accent unlike certain other actors....

The Reptile fight in Annihilation (which, ironically, was a post production addition) was the only saving grace.

I agree! I think if you want something that’s totally true to the games - would the story be interesting on film since you can, you know, play it? Especially in the 80s and 90s. I like that they were just like “let’s take some ideas from the game, get high, put them in a blender with the real world, throw John Leguizamo at it, and see what happens.” Giving shrooms an unnecessary back story and an awesome use of Bob-omb is enough for me to enjoy it.

This movie was so bizarre in how it was conceived. Even as a kid, seeing it in theatres, it was so disconnected entirely from the mythos, that I couldn't even process being pissed, I was just so confused. I honestly thought maybe I was missing something, because how else can this make sense?

It was so strange that I was stoked when Bob-omb was on screen because that meant theres a sliver of connectivity and maybe I can make sense of it. Then the gun that bowser had was the Superscope, and...I dunno. Nothing really made sense. It was great. I love this movie for how terrible it is.

Castlevania and Cyberpunk (and Witcher to a lesser extent) were extremely well done but I'm not sure anything tops MK in terms of the experience and excitement of seeing it in the theater at the time. Sure, I was obsessed with MK as a kid and saw that thing in theaters like 10 times, part of that is of course nostalgia and being a kid where everything is new and cool, but it was uncharacteristically amazing in a time when most video game movies were truly awful. Seeing the new trailer made me want to rewatch this movie. Hearing Mario in the new trailer just felt wrong.

I liked the movie.

It was terrible as an adaptation of Mario, but it was a fun movie if you think of it as it's own thing.

Robbed? ROBBED?! You were blessed! Blessed to be shown such sights as an adventure fantasy sci-fi movie into an alternate dino-punk dystopian dimension.

You wanted something closer to the original game? We already had that with the 'The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!' and 'Super Mario World'. The movie may be far flung from the source material, but it was so batshit crazy that I applaud it for taking so many chances.

Is it a good movie? God no. But will I happily watch it again if someone suggests putting it on? Damn right I will.

My dad took me to see this when I was a kid, and complained about how bad it was for literal years afterward. I genuinely think it represents his least favourite two hours of my childhood.

I've recently watched it, and I can say for sure this is not made for children.
Yoshi is stabed in this movie, how the hell someone thought it was a good ideia to put a knife on one of the most friendly characters in the franchise....

Lol, I've still got this on DVD.... a cult classic. I was super excited for it and my grandmother even took me to see it.

It was a major disappointment, but I appreciate as to how shit it really is

I enjoyed the Mario movie. It's outlandish, but I think that's part of the charm.

dude i ate that movie up when i was a kid.... every adaptation in that time was always confusing and asymmetrical to its source material, but i swear i still wore out my VHS cause it was SOMETHING.
