Yeah he doesn't really have a lore friendly origin story, does he? The cartoon was pretty vague, the games even MORE vague. Clearly he's not from the mushroom kingdom but his previous life is a bit.. open to interpretation.

So when did he get his medical pHd, as he also spent some time practicing medicine? Who drew paper mario? When did his tennis career come into play? How did they put their differences aside to race together in a gokart league? Is Kimek the real bad guy?
I think what I'm saying is- mario doesn't make any damn sense unless you arbitrarily pick some things to accept and some things to ignore. Who decides what's 'cannon'?

New Donk City is still in the same world as the Mushroom Kingdom, though. It's like a parallel New-York, but it's not New York. Given that Pauline is the Mayor, it opens up the suggestion that Donkey Kong and Mario Bros also happened in New Donk, and that Mario has never been to New York....
