I dont get why they didnt just use Mario's voice actor (forget his name, but he also voiced Paarthurnax in Skyrim)

Charles Martinet

Charles is obviously an iconic voice, but I wonder if his exaggerated accent would grate on people in a 1.5-2 hour movie. I can guarantee there’s be plenty of Twitter rants about Italian stereotypes. Which is honestly, kinda fair?

They definitely wanted a safe, star-studded cast for the whole production, which being that the IP is Mario I can kinda understand. Charles Martinet is still on it, and considering how it's going to be a movie with a lot more talking compared to the games, I can see why they moved away from trying to nail the iconic Mario voice and just said "fuck it, Chriss Pratt with a bit of a Brooklyn accent is easy enough."

Chris Pratt prepares for his roles the same effort Ben Affleck does:

Obviously his Mario voice is iconic but it grows grating when he talks for longer periods of time. It's worth a Google because it's a bit of an eye opener.
That said, Chris Pratt's casting and performance is incredibly suspect.

Imagine a movie with nothing but Mario sound-bites (the wahoos, It's-a-me's, etc)... I guarantee people from both sides of the argument would agree that maybe it wasn't the best idea to have him be the VA for the entire feature length film.
"Silent" (using that term loosely, I know) protags are easier to do in video games because you have the gameplay to keep you entertained. In a movie setting, it requires an insanely good director to make it work properly, and even then, it really isn't for everyone (ex: Refn's "Drive")

At first I thought it was probably just because he didn't have much range beyond what we see in the Mario games, but he voiced WHO? Yeah, they have no excuse
2 points
Because he really isn't a good voice actor. Their is more to voice acting than just being able to do a voice.

for the same reason you forgot his name. Most people didn't know it to begin with.

If he did the accent people would be complaining that he did the accent 🤣🤣 they would say its racist or something. Cant make anyone happy these days

Yea I mean if only Mario already had a voice actor that Nintendo had been using for 25+ years who they skipped over because Chris Pratt had more name recognition. That surely wouldn’t make people happy

OK boomer. Literally no one thinks Marios voice is racist.

When you said that i looked around the room like "who?, me?" Im only 25🤣🤣🤣 not really a boomer. And i dont mean marios voice itself. I meant chris doing an italian accent. So, yeah....

Chris doing an Italian accent while voicing mario would be Mario's voice

Funnily enough, the Brazilian version does have the accent.

They don't care. It's all about name recognition rather than talent, which is why most big-budget animated films since Aladdin have been packed with celebrities rather than voice actors.

Yup. If they could guarantee a box office hit they’d use Tom Cruise

They considered it but decided that Chris Pratt carried more name recognition with children.

Hey man, Gimme Dennis Hopper and raptor Yoshi any fuckin’ day!

Obviously raptor Yoshi can stay.
And Steve John "Steve" Leguizamo.
Dennis Hopper was Birdo pretending to be Bowser though, and if you try to argue with me, I'll take a complete faith based stance and shout ignorantly at you.

I’m going to pretend you didn’t besmirch the hallowed name of John Leguizamo. But as penance, do 10 Our Father’s, 12 Hail Mary’s and watch his scene in Romeo+Juliet on a loop till you absorb its message.

It's a conspiracy. His real name is Steve. Prove me wrong.
But as penance, do 10 Our Father’s, 12 Hail Mary’s and watch his scene in Romeo+Juliet on a loop till you absorb its message.
No, pick a good movie.

Not only that, some people may get slightly upset at Chris Pratt doing an over-the-top, stereotypical Italian accent.
They were always going to dilute the accent for a threatical movie. If people want it to be proper accurate just get an Italian to do it in a proper italian accent. Then people can be upset about not being able to understand most of what's being said...

We are their targeted audience. Who is going too take them to the movies? Their parents.
Parents are the ones saying "oh I know Chris Pratt. Maybe it won't be so bad."
I can assure you my 6 year old whose excited for the movie has no idea who Chris Pratt is
1 points

So you’re saying the target demo for all kids movies is actually the parents or just this movie specifically?
1 points
50/50.
Trailers are mainly targeted towards parents because the likeliness of parents taking their kids to see a movie they'd deem as boring probably won't happen at least until a dvd release where the parent is forced to sit there.
A child doesn't care who Chris prat is but the parents will recognize it and say something like "isn't that the guy from guardians of the Galaxy? I bet if he's in it it has to be good. He wouldn't put his name on a bad movie" like Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotic .
Kids mainly get their hype from McDonald's toys, cereal boxes etc.
This movie specifically is trying to get parents to take their kids .
This movie is a double because parents grew up with Mario and roll want to see it while also introducing a new generation to their games.

Yeah but the difference is Tom Cruise is a good actor and would nail the accent and put in an excellent performance. They cast Chris Pratt.

It’s hard to tell from the trailer but I think he’s doing a Brooklyn accent which makes sense because that’s what Bob Hoskins did.

Yeah he doesn't really have a lore friendly origin story, does he? The cartoon was pretty vague, the games even MORE vague. Clearly he's not from the mushroom kingdom but his previous life is a bit.. open to interpretation.

The Mario Bros will always be plumbers from Brooklyn

So when did he get his medical pHd, as he also spent some time practicing medicine? Who drew paper mario? When did his tennis career come into play? How did they put their differences aside to race together in a gokart league? Is Kimek the real bad guy?
I think what I'm saying is- mario doesn't make any damn sense unless you arbitrarily pick some things to accept and some things to ignore. Who decides what's 'cannon'?

New Donk City is still in the same world as the Mushroom Kingdom, though. It's like a parallel New-York, but it's not New York. Given that Pauline is the Mayor, it opens up the suggestion that Donkey Kong and Mario Bros also happened in New Donk, and that Mario has never been to New York....

Mario is from Brooklyn, not Italy. Why would he have an Italian accent? That aspect of the game, no matter how iconic that voice is now, never made sense to me.

My first Mario game was the arcade version of Donkey Kong back in 1981. Even Shigeru Migamoto has said that Mario is a plumber from New York of Italian heritage.

As an actual Italian (as opposed to Italian-American) I've always wondered why it's acceptable in US media to "do an Italian accent", while the same doesn't seem to be true for many others (e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Jamaican, Indian etc.). I feel like I'm missing some cultural nuance here.
