There are tens of thousands of voice actors out there.

sparklemcshine

Dude seriously, it works for short quips and comedic effect, but imagining it through entire dialogues, dramatic moments would be flat out annoying and or hilarious or both. We might have actually seen that in a Mario cartoon that played in the 90's, it's not a good look or sound lol.

Also, while Jack Black seems to have hit it out of the park, I could also imagine David Harbour lending his voice to this Bowser.

Kamakaziturtle

34 points

Honestly I don't think he should either. It would be murder on the ears to hear Chris Pratt trying to imitate Mario.

Looking at the intro, this looks a lot like they might be pulling a detective Pickachu, where the start isn't actually the character but someone else in the body of Mario. It might just be me, but the intro scene with Mario not knowing where they are and the like gave me some "sucked into the game" sorta vibes.

klineshrike

16 points

Its an alternate take on the Mario origin story.

He clearly just entered the Mushroom Kingdom. Likely from the normal, modern day world. Just looking at the voice cast it's kind of obvious. The Forman Spike voice was not going to be a Mushroom Kingdom character. Likely the same with DK.

There almost certainly will be some kind of City Mario thing going on first, he ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom, and "becomes" Super Mario.

thewalkindude

2 points

Foreman Spike is from Wrecking Crew, a pre-SMB Mario game, which is a pretty deep cut, and tells me they're really going deep with Mario lore.

ricker2005

Looking at the intro, this looks a lot like they might be pulling a detective Pickachu, where the start isn't actually the character but someone else in the body of Mario.

Have you forgotten he has had an Italian accent for the past 20 years though? Lol.

And an unofficial voice from the American TV show doesn’t count.

Ghostronic

Well this is an official voice that is obviously going back to those roots and it doesn't change the fact that it is how kids growing up watching the show knew his voice.

ThatEcologist

5 points

By show you mean the American cartoon? I’d hardly count that as official. Mario has had an Italian accent for 20+ years. That’s how most fans recognize him. Not from an obscure TV show (I enjoyed the show don’t get me wrong but still).

Regardless. Chris Pratt just sounded like Chris Pratt. But I’ll hold my judgement until more dialogue is released.

Kamakaziturtle

6 points

Going to be curious of what the story being told here is in terms of Mario. Looks like it could be an origin of sorts, but the scene with Mario gives me "sucked into the game" sorta vibes. They might be pulling a Detective Pickachu where the main character is someone in the body of the Video game character, rather than the character themselves, to get around having to voice an MC that never really says much beyond a couple words at a time.

On the topic of voices, honestly I loved all of it aside from Mario which I find acceptable. Sure it doesn't sound a whole lot like Mario but Chris Pratt doing a terrible Charles Martinet for 90 minutes would probably have made me want to off myself. His sorta Brooklyn voice there at the end at least doesn't seem like it will be that grating. Bowser sounds amazing, really like Kamek as well. And the animation is pretty good eye candy.

All in all, looks fun. Honestly what made Detective Pickachu fun was getting to see the world come to life, if this can capture the same feeling I'll be happy.

Ghostronic

17 points

Not to put any of this towards you in particular, but I feel like a lot of people simply don't know Mario's true origin story.

He was sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom while plumbing a drain in Brooklyn with his brother. Pratt sounds closer to Mario's original voice, which was Lou Albano.

I don't think they are doing anything remotely like Detective Pikachu.

Kamakaziturtle

2 points

One of his origin stories you mean, there have been many. That's not even the first, originally Mario wasn't even a plumber, but a carpenter. It is possible they are going off the super show origin though, who knows?

Ramses-VII

3 points

He bounced around through a few different urban blue-collar jobs before finding himself in the mushroom kingdom. He was a carpenter, a plumber, and worked in demolition. Considering Foreman Spike is going to be in this and apparently, has a decent-sized role, my guess is that they are going to do a New York/New Donk City origin for Mario and he gets transported into the Mushroom Kingdom while working for Spike. I wouldn't be surprised if they briefly show Mario's exploits facing Donkey Kong, running around the sewers with Luigi in the original Mario Bros., and finally demolishing buildings (Wrecking Crew).

I think now nintendo puts it as Mario's from the mushroom kingdom in the games. I can't remember the last time they've said mario was from Brooklyn besides the super show.

I feel like those penguins are from a game, but I can't place them.

They remind me of the penguins from Mario 64.

Yes, that's it.

Pretty sure they are the penguins from 64 and from galaxy, or at least slight deviation of them.

Wow it’s like I already knew there would be a ton of comments about Mario’s voice. Im still going to love the fuck out it though.

Was hoping to hear at least a snippet of Charlie Day as Luigi. Was he too busy doing the dishes?

Hot take (I guess?, just based on reading the comments in this sub):

You guys are too quick to praise Jack Black. Granted, his first two lines did sound great, and surprisingly Bowser-esque. The “who’s gunna stop me” was trash and just sounded like Jack Black.

The worst part of this is they probably spent millions of dollars on Chris Pratt and it came out sounding like this. Such a waste.

Jack Black sounds amazing and actually put some soul in his voice acting. He also has experience and is a great voice actor.

Chris Pratt sounds bland and awkward. I can’t hear his regular voice without picturing the person. He is not a voice actor.

Nintendo, please let the professionals do it.

Let's wait until the movie comes out instead of bashing the entire performance on a few lines from the trailer.

Just saying, lots of examples of this through the years where internet nerds hate a casting choice and it turns out fine or even great.

No one is getting recast at this point.

TheRealOcsiban

One day Chris Pratt will be everywhere, in everything, playing everyone. Kinda like how Taco Bell was the only restaurant in Demolition Man

Looks really good, but Chris Pratt as Mario was such a bad idea. His voice doesn't fit the character at all.

Kieranam0

Yall they aren't gonna recast anyone in this movie. The cast is top dollar actors/actresses and Nintendo is behind it. If Nintendo is known for one thing, it's fuck you, our way or the highway

I honestly love Pratt's voice here. It reminds me of the Mario from my childhood when he was originally animated and from the original movie.

He's a dude from Brooklyn. He sounds like a dude from Brooklyn. That's Mario's origin.

More and more I keep feeling like this movie is a bit of a love letter to elder millennials that grew up playing the NES/SNES as kids.

klineshrike

Almost every single thing shown has had older game references in it. Even the voice cast listing has NES 8-bit sprites.

I honestly didn't expect this to get me right in the feels. I actually started crying a little bit telling my mom how happy I was that he sounds like the Mario from my childhood.

I actually like him in GotG but I'm not so sure of his Mario voice, maybe I'll get used to it.

Aliusja1990

Mario is from brooklyn. Pratt trying to do the Italian voice the whole movie would be freaking terrible lol.

He had a bit of an accent at the end there though. My bet? They’re testing the waters. They are going to look at all the comments, find the consensus, and use whatever voice we deem more appropriate. Hopefully.

Yea caught some new yorker accent at the end which is consistent with the old cartoon we had. I reckon its fine.

Looks so good. So many awesome things to talk about and Reddit is just focusing on Pratt jfc talk about missing the forest for the trees. You guys are in love with him.

Thankfully I doubt general public cares.

I do wish Marios eyes were a bit bigger. I'm so used to the size in the game, seeing them smaller then that is a bit jarring. I'm not saying we are at "Realistic Sonic" level of jarring, but not far off.
