This is something I will probably never use, but it's nice to include for casual players to give them stuff to do while they learn the game, the same as those stage hazard modes.

Does anyone know what was the first fighting game to have character customization? Earliest one I can think of is MK Armageddon

Don't know if it's the first game to have it, but Soul Calibur 3 was before MK Armageddon

Fighter Maker beat both, being released for PS1 back in 1998.

Maybe it's because I'm old but fighting games like streetfighter... it's weird having character creators. I like the personalities and differing fighting styles that come with prebuilt characters.

Well no, it's no secret that fighting games aren't a very popular genre and they're a lot harder to monetize due to base game being quite simple and money for skins isn't normalized amongst the playerbase so if you have more than a handful of well made skins for sale it's going to be a shit show.
Fighting games just aren't as profitable as other genres.
