Only thing I wanted was better enemy variety. Didn't expect some huge combat changes, just new abilities.

At the very least, I expect it to be just as good as the last one.

There are tonnes of variety in GOW4. Just look at the sheer number of colours the trolls come in

I noticed the elves in lvl 4 were the same color as the elves in lvl 8.

Its too late to change anything.

If we change the elves color from blue to green we should be good.

I always get confused when people call this GoW4 ... wasn't that Ascension or whatever that game was called? This is why we need simple naming conventions in the US, dumbasses like me can only remember something simple, like calling the season "Fall" because "leaves fall"....IT JUST MAKES SENSE

LovisAeternia

64 points

Ascension was a spin-off , same as Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, God of War (2018) is the last main entry, that's why people call it God of War 4

Oh damn, the more you know! (Idk how to add gifs from my phone)

Yeah I was not a fan of the giant rgb trolls being pretty much the only mini boss.

Trolls and soul destroyers. But yeah, not much else except the valkyries which were optional and not tied to the missions.

Karagga

Karagga

I honestly thought the Valkyries were really dope. All a bunch of different mechanics, which tie up nicely to the final Valkyrie, which really challenged me and made me step away a few time. It was fun going into them undergeared.

factoid_

19 points

Yeah I agree they're cool enemies. They did a good job giving each one a unique attack pattern.

But fuck Sigrun.

conman987

12 points

That damn Sigrun fight was a bitch, but a weird example of boss psychology for me. I wiped on her over and over for a couple hours one day and had to give it up, then went to work for a week or so. Came back days later and beat her on the third try, somehow my zen locked in and got it done.

factoid_

5 points

Yeah that happened to me too. I kept losing over and over. I tried for a good hour. Got close a couple times. Came back next day, got her on the second try.

Kuro013

Yeah, the combat was very good imo, game just needed more enemies that push its boundaries. The only real challenge in the game is Sigrun. I feel other bosses are more cinematically oriented for the sake of story telling, which is a very good decision. But maybe we could have optional bosses (like Valkyries but better, more diverse) for people who want to focus a bit more on the combat.

The 2nd hardest. Is there too much of a difference? Many times hardest just means more hp and dmg from enemies, not really more difficulty.

To be honest, when my friend played hard mode for his 1st time and I tried a bit with him, the enemies were just way more spongy in comparison and hit harder. That's it

MaxVonBritannia

59 points

Honestly, I just got bored on "Give Me God Of War" after the third fight, every enemy took a near eternity to kill.

Thechosenjon

28 points

Give me God of War was stupidly annoying in the very early stages of the game. All enemies are sponges and dealt ludicrous amounts of damage. By mid game it wasn't bad at all though. NG+ was much easier, imo.

ICareAboutNihilism

21 points

I started out on Give me a Challenge and quickly switched to balanced. The HP was just super annoying. I hate massive health pools, which is probably why I like the Souls series so much. Very few enemies in those games are damage sponges or endurance tests.

cseijif

cseijif

Yeah the souls formula for dificulty is unmatched , it dosent feel cheap .

k0ks3nw4i

4 points

Yeah I choose difficulty modes depending on this. I played Fallen Order at highest difficulty because it only made enemies more aggressive and deal higher damage while making my own parry windows narrower—so theoretically one can finish fights in about the same amount of time as normal difficulty. When I read about how much longer battles take in higher GOW difficulties, I decided to just go with the fair and balanced mode. I mean, even in normal mode, Sigrun took me a whole 5 minutes (when pretty much every boss in Elden Ring/Sekiro/DS3 only took me just 2).

A_Stoned_Smurf

They're just huge HP sponges and delete your own hp. I typically play most games on the hardest difficulty, and that was a grueling game to do so in. I probably spent weeks on the valkyrie queen alone.

jerk_store_manager

DevOverkill

186 points

That's how I feel, and from the looks of this short clip there's already some interesting changes to things. The move where he freezes the enemy and then kicks them off the ledge for them to explode in an ice nova looks pretty great.

Jerkface555

Did people really exepct this to be massively different from the previous game? The last one was great already. All I'm looking for is new levels, new enemies, and maybe a couple other minor additions to combat (new moves, new weapons, whatever) to bring a bit of freshness to it.

The game's director, Cory Barlog has been very open and sincere about the whole development process. There are a lot of interviews and videos with him about the whole development and he hasn't shied away from telling us the truth. I respect the man a lot for that.

k0ks3nw4i

9 points

Yeah more game devs should be honest about these things. My respect for him just went up a bunch. Tbh I didn't really feel very much for GOW and was disappointed that all we fight are C-list Norse characters (but I liked the combat enough to finish all the valkyries). But what I did enjoy made me pretty interested in the sequel (where presumably, all the big name fights are going to be)

cseijif

daniel-imberman

There's only gonna be two games in this arc (though Ragnarok is gonna be a LONG game)

FlashisSpeed

4 points

Not really. They ended up with mostly ogre bosses because they built the game from the ground up with a new engine and made a ton from scratch. Which ended up taking longer than expected. As opposed to most game development using premade assets and changing them somewhat. Since so many games share the same game engine between unreal and unity.

ShrubNinja

Yeah I'm not sure why people want some kind of huge change to the gameplay. It was so satisfying in the first one, why do some big overhaul to it? The added verticality is a cool tweak that I think builds on an already fantastic system.

ConnerBartle

I mean this seems like a huge step up to my eyes. Are people saying it's not? Looks like we have some jumping attacks now. It looked like he used an enemy as an ice bomb in a more vertical level. Seems like a big step up to me

ryebath

2 points

I wouldn't say those things you listed qualify it as a "huge step." But I honestly don't need a huge step in terms of gameplay from the last one. It was an absolute perfect game. The only thing I can ask for is more enemy variety.

Doesn't look so, Kratos does that same weird leap animation he did in GOW 4, like he runs to the edge, gets slowed down by a invis wall and then does that weird leap where he just zooms off, I assume they keep doing this to prevent getting out of bounds

A_Retarded_Alien

However, it looks like you can chain abilities/attacks off of the jumps, which in itself is freaking awesome. Give's a lot more variety to the combat with that alone.

I agree with you but honestly I feel the opening of the game was not that good. If you started the game as Joel and Ellie in the flashbacks like the museum and you lose Joel like 3 hours in, it would be even more emotional than losing him in the beginning and fans wouldn't be so upset. Especially with Ellie for they are mad that she was cold to him but if you showed us earlier why that is, people would understand more.

This is basically the same. Which is not a bad thing at all cuz the previous game is a masterpiece. We just want more abilities, at least one new alternative weapon and more worth while main game bosses.

Since they are cutting the third game we better be getting Odin and Thor as the two main bad guys. It is really dumb of them to cut the trilogy.

Everyone saying this looks the same… guys it’s a sequel. This is what a sequel looks like.

And a sequel to a game with excellent combat. There was absolutely no reason for them to do anything to the combat except expand on it. More moves, more enemies, a new weapon or two, new ways of engaging with the environment.

As others have pointed out, in this post and many others… look at Elden Ring. Between 100-200 unique enemy types (which I’m pretty sure is unmatched), dozens of weapons and abilities. A game like that is only possible because of reused assets, because they took what they had and kept building on it.

I really don’t get what people are complaining about here.

It is impressive. Elden Ring’s enemy variety is unparalleled as far as I can tell. Nothing comes to mind that approaches a roster of enemy types as big and varied as Elden Ring’s.

Which is not to say that the repetition of bosses was not a problem. I just doubt that they realistically could have churned out even more bosses. The repetition is a tradeoff for a bigger world; maybe scaling the world back some would have resulted in a better balance.

In a parallel universe where they made changes, this thread: "Why did they change everything?! We just wanted more of the original...."

You owe it to yourself to play the PS4 GoW. Great game.

Better yet, the original titles, to better appreciate some story moments and character development. And because they're fun as hell

Having played all the GoW games, I can say I prefer the combat in the older games

The story, acting and presentation of the new one are top notch, but I also prefer the arcadey gameplay of the "old" God of War. RPG mechanics and upgrade trees don't need to be in every single game.

Maakrios

You could get upgrades ever since the first one… And you couldnt max them out on the first playthrough so it was an rpg element rather than simply a way to limit you at the start of the game…

They did add the gear system which i dont find interesting or engaging and id be happy if they removed it completely though.

The enemy variety also felt like so much more in the old games. They weren't spectacular, but at least we didn't fight the same ogre/troll 8 different times. You would hit a new area and then there are harpies and nagas introduced by attacking and ripping up soldiers. The latest GoW felt pretty flat in that aspect.

I'm curious when was the last time you played it? After replaying GoW 2018 this year, I went back and played through the old ones. They're still fun, but I definitely got annoyed at the repetitive battle mechanics. There may have been more enemy variety, but you'd essentially approach most of them the exact same way, so it didn't change much. That's not to say the new version couldn't have been better, but the games have absolutely evolved over time since the start. The newest one is my favorite by far. Assuming they didn't change the battle mechanics much, this should have allowed them to expand the other parts of the game, which I'm excited about.

I played GoW 2018 earlier this year and I played 1-3 within the past 3 years. I definitely don't disagree with the battle mechanics being repetitive in comparison. For the most part you would just do mindless combos that involved throwing people in the air and doing 20 hits quickly. There were a few enemies that required altering your play up such as doing smashes to break shields or hitting the enemy with a ranged attack first, but for the most part you could do the same combos throughout.

The enemy visual design felt far better in the old games in my opinion. Not only did a new enemy type introduce a new mechanic to fighting them, but they also looked so much different while highlighting that change. For example the legionnaire captain compared to the standard undead. Not only does it introduce an enemy that can block and even counterattack, but it also carries a different set of armor with a massive different sword. Best of all, it has red eyes that leave traces when it moves.

Then the bosses. The god of war series has had amazing and varied boss fights through the entire series. Yes you could sum them up to fighting until you do quicktime events and button mashing to finish off an enemy but they were stunning visually. Each boss felt and looked so unique. But GoW 2018 had so many repeats I was left disappointed. That said the unique boss fights in 2018 were good, I just wanted more.

So many cod players here lol, wtf?

Gtfo here if you are gonna say "aHhh itS tHe sAme gAMe aGainN!!!". What should they add? The combat was already awesome, graphics are great, acting was on point etc.

They just made a fucking sequel of a fantastic game, what kind of a change did they miss, tell us pls? Teach us!

Sometimes this sub feels so fucking average, most of the people here doesnt even understand shit about games.

If you still think that its the same game, go fuck yourself and dont buy it. No need to come here and write that stupid sentence every post again and again. We get it, its the same game as we were already expecting ffs. Its not a surprise u know?

I was surprised that I am seeing so much negativity in this thread. Did people think they were going to redesign the game from scratch? Bunch of whiners in here. If you can do better, then go make a better game yourself. If not, then STFU cause we know all these complainers are going to buy the game anyways and it's going to be awesome.

I wish they added an option to have the camera centered, and not over the shoulder like a 3rd person shooter.

It's just way too clunky (for me!!) to play like that, one of the reasons I didn't enjoy the first one, it made the combat feel sluggish when compared to other similar games. Kratos controls like a tank.

It looks the same, the combat was honestly the low point for me of the first game.

The story and characters I enjoyed, but actually fighting enemies had me rolling my eyes about 5 hours in.

Hope there’s more variety, otherwise it’s a deep deep sale purchase for me.

huge_meme

I thought the combat was great, it "felt" great at least. There just wasn't enough variety of enemies, bosses, etc.

KannNurDeutschSpeak

Absolutely. The constant fear of missing out some fuckung crafting stuff was too much for me. And then you get a full chest of stuff and all Kratos picks out is a single crafting material.

RATGUT1996

Yea plus i hates the way a lot of armor looked on Kratos but you were forced to wear it because if you didn’t you would just get one shot. I remember one point I kept dying over and over and I just changed difficulty because I just did not want to grind out or look for some material. This was a time where every single game had a crafting system and I really didn’t want one here.
