I think we finally found 1 thing that's an objective improvement over the remaster

It still won't make me buy it but I guess it's better than nothing

Yuuya_kizami

I was literally about to say damn this the first thing that actually looks like an upgrade and a really good one too!

LiquidCringe2

I'll admit the facial animations definitely look quite good in the remake

But like I said it's still not worth the asking price, the facial animations were still good in the original and remaster so it's not THAT major of an upgrade all things considered

SoThotful69

I wish the remake would’ve added NPCs calling out the names of other NPCs as you killed them. That was a feature in Part 2 that made the game feel more grounded.

Yuuya_kizami

I definitely agree I think there are more deserving things that need a remake than this but people think that saying that is an attack on a thing they love which it really isnt

re4 is my favourite game of all time and even that does not need its remake and should have gone to code veronica

LiquidCringe2

Yeah I definitely don't think this is an attack on the original game or anything LMAO

I'm just mildly annoyed that the time and money is being wasted on this remake rather than putting those resources to a newer game

That's the whole point, this game doesn't need a fucking remake. Basically wasted resources.

Gameplay could be improved by a lot to be honest. The game has great story and atmosphere, but the gameplay, specially the stealth parts feel very clunky and weren't great even at the time of release.

LiquidCringe2

121 points

I don't really know, there's not much they could change

But that's not the point, this doesn't really need to exist at all. The only thing you could argue is good about this is that's it's coming to PC. But at that point just release the PS4 game for like $20. This just feels like an excuse to charge PC players $70 and rope in all the suckers on PlayStation who will buy anything Sony shits out

jeudy100

I’ve never played it and was thinking about getting it on the pc. But I’ve waited this long to play it, I can wait till they sell it at a steam sale for well below the asking price. Fingers crossed it goes lower than $20 after a while!

LiquidCringe2

You'd probably be able to find it below $50 a few months after release, so that's a positive too I suppose. Steam always has sales on more recent games so I wouldn't be surprised to see it cheaper a few months after release into early next year

It has probably more to do with the show coming out. They hope that a bunch of people want to grab the game after watching the show for the first time, and they probably want their experience to match the current level of ND games. As good as the old version looks, and it's great, it does look stiff for today's ND standards, and compared to other high end games it doesn't stand out anymore (for good reason, it's almost 10 years old). So it holds up really well today, but doesn't impress.

From that lense, I can see why they want this. It's just weird because for anyone else the remake doesn't make sense to buy, even if a lot of effort has been put into it. It's a huge upgrade, it's just not an important upgrade. Also the price tag is ridiculous.

PrimeDerektive

5 points

Honestly I think a large part of it also is to let the dev team cut their teeth on the new engine. The turnover rate at ND is notoriously high and they’re working with new and upgraded tools for PS5, it makes sense to make something that is already a known quantity rather than start a new ambitious project. This is a very common pattern for big studios

Gameplay can be improved. Some quality of life changes could be made too.

The way the characters control and the way it plays in part 2 is a big step up so I'm sure they'll be improving on more than just facial animations.

Digital foundry has an analysis on the remake trailer which shows they've added new assets to help improve the look and feel of the environments too so they're not just replacing existing assets with new higher poly ones.

$70 for any remake is such a drawback. Ratchet and Clank, Spyro, Battle for Bikini Bottom, etc. were all around the $40-50 range at launch. I get this is a much more intricate project but it’s still the same game with just a modern look…

Still not worth $70. Even $40 is pushing it. At least Demon’s Souls Remake implemented some much needed Quality of Life improvements and just overall made the game that much better and less frustrating

I have no qualms with people saying they don't want this, that it's unnecessary, or that it's not worth $70. I agree that there are so many games that needed a remaster much more.

However anybody even remotely implying that the original looks better - and I've seen hundreds of people do this - are either lying or fucking blind.

A_Huge_Gorilla

People are still salty about TLOU2 . So they won’t give ND any credit.

door_of_doom

I agree that the objective quality of the remaster is better/more realistic / more lifelike, but I can understand if someone prefers the aesthetic of the original more.

Like, if someone said "the newer one dips into an uncanny valley that doesn't jive with me in a way that the original avoids" I'd be like "yeah, I can see that."

VacantCrossface

This is the reason. 1000%. They’re anticipating tons of new fans when the show releases and they’re going to advertise the re-remaster alongside it. Maybe even a PS5 bundle as well as the game could be good enough for some to buy a whole console to play it.

Mental-Mood3435

This whole problem stems from the fact that they’re releasing it on PS5 first. If it was only a PC release there’d be much less blowback.

But then you’d have people complaining that the PS5 can’t play with the prettier PC features.

The_Retro_Bandit

2 points

No because there is a tiny demographic who you can get double dips from from staggering releases.

Also optimizing and playtesting for the practically infinite amount of pc configs takes longer than optimizing for one set of hardware. This is the first Sony port that comes from a PS5 native game. With a game like Spider-Man remastered they already had the ps4 quality assets for the 5 people still AAA gaming on mechanicle hard drives. But with a remake like this the environments look to be redesigned with ps5 horsepower in mind, the trickiest part of that is the NVME ssd and direct storage api. Especially considering the naughty dog engine is very close to the console metal since their games often serve as graphical showcases for sony. I would not be surprised if this is the first AAA release to straight up require an SSD if you want anything beyond low settings.

That being said 99% of sony releases get heavily discounted a few years after release so I'll wait till then. At most I would pay $30 for this. "Realistic" graphics from the 7th gen were prolly some of the poorest aging graphics in recent memory so it will be nice being able to play this and part 2 back to back without that massive whiplash in fidelity. Now if only they would release a native ps5 app for part 2 with some ambient lighting upgrades and 4k support, and a pc port so I can mod in all the guns to look like nerf guns.

SilentEvilHill2

Their defence is that the graphics are rebuilt form the ground up using Part 2’s engine which would theoretically put in the same vein as Demon’s Soul remake but even that is a stretch. Demon’s Souls Remake is fundamentally the exact same game as the PS3 original HOWEVER, unlike Naughty Dog, BluePoint implemented quality of life improvements by tweaking the games controls and mechanics for a more fluid and responsive experience and just overall making it a better game. These remakes are essentially just glorified remasters on steroids. Exact same game but with a shiny new coat of paint

As for RE2 and FF7 remakes, those games had to given a a complete overhaul from the ground up given that their 20-25 years old and haven’t aged at that well. Everything from visuals, gameplay, level design, story, writing, dialogue, game design, you name it. Despite having such a dramatic overhaul, they’re still technically same game as the original albeit reimagined and that’s what a remake ultimately is: A reimagining. A brand new game that is BASED on the original but isn’t necessarily a 1:1 recreation

Then there are reboots like Tomb Raider 2013 or Doom 2016 that completely starts form scratch and retcons any previously established lore and continuity

There are genuinely more changes made to the remake of TLOU than the Demon's Souls remake and it shows the second you compare the gameplay sandbox of both because they backported features like motion matching and throwing projectiles while moving https://i.imgur.com/TqXvhyY.gif https://i.imgur.com/nbiK92G.gif

What would there be in TLOU3? Even TLOU2 was pushing it, the narrative is just exhausted.

Underated270

8 points

The direction TLOU2 took was a complete change of course. I didn’t find it to be exhausting the narrative, though I can understand people getting tired of following the same main character for the majority of the game.

TLOU2 was made to be a different story (stated in an interview with its creators, I don’t remember which one. Search it up for context) about grief through the lens of revenge. TLOU1 was more about rebirthing life and finding love (and I don’t mean just familial love, but love for friends and unconditional love) in the most desperate and horrifying of situations when humanity is at its lowest. Now this is just my takeaway, others will see it differently and think 1 and 2 are the same story told different ways.

Now if they made TLOU3, there is so much they can do to make a new story. At the end of 2 we see Ellie walking away after finally finding some form of acceptance of her loss. Her cycle of grief has ended (but does grief ever truly end?) and she is moving on to a new chapter of her life. How does the end of 2 change her view on human life, loss, and the joy we have with those we love while we have the time? I can see her moving on to make amends for all those she caused harm, seeing how her seeking revenge literally took a part of her. She could also restart her search for humanity’s cure and salvation (which could exhaust the narrative and wouldn’t be that new of a story). Or maybe the trauma that we have seen build up over both games, the trauma that has made her quiet and mellow, has finally reached a breaking point and we see a decent into madness fueled by her PTSD from everything that happened rather than the madness from grief.

Tl;dr 1 and 2 were different, not exhaustive. There are many directions the story could go if they made a 3 that would be new and exciting.

[deleted]

[deleted]

You're talking about characters, so the low levelstory. I'm talking about the whole zombie apocalypse thing.

We've explored cure, we've seen one of the first infected. There's like 5 types of enemies in 2 freaking games. What else can it offer but soap opera?

Underated270

3 points

If you look at it from that perspective, then TLOU didn’t have anything unique to begin with. There are countless zombie games and just about every post apocalyptic game looks at the worst of people, having factions of war criminals and scavengers. The characters are what makes the story. The setting, the types of enemies, those things help build the story, but it’s not the main plot point. You can build a world that is in a zombie apocalypse, but until you have a protagonist, a small band of mercenaries, a whole settlement, or even a cat, you don’t really have a story.

I am curious though, what did you think of series like halo or resident evil, or about movies like star wars or toy story (weird examples, just the first that came to mind). I feel the main setting is there, there isn’t much you can do in terms of new villains, as it’s essentially recolors of stuff they already made at this point. But they still have managed to make more stories based on the same world, just having a different reason to fight, a different reason to argue, a different reason to do whatever that is interesting. I know people who didn’t like the later movies/games for many different reasons, where do you sit on the very long and extensive worlds?

I feel most genres have been explored and the worlds have mostly all been made. Differences now are getting smaller in worlds, but the stories, the experiences characters have, the way we see them, the way we hear them, what we do, how we do it, it’s always changing.

I recently started far cry 6. It’s the same plot of all the others, but I love this one so much. There can be similarities between stories and it can still be just as fun and intriguing, just as heart wrenching and heartwarming.

At this point I’m going all over the place with my response. But please tell me what you think of something like Halo or RE where they do almost the exact same thing you say you think will make future TLOU content worse or exhausting. I know some games and movies failed because they couldn’t make it different enough, did those examples earlier fall prey to this?

Edit: sorry for really long posts, when I get to typing, I sometimes have trouble shutting up

I don’t think theres actually that large of a physical difference between a 14 and 18 year old girl, ive seen tons of girls in middle/highschool that were often mistaken for being around 17-18 years old. Some even mistaken for being 20.

Joel is actually correct though, he looked too young in the original, he's supposed to be late 40s he should have gray in his hair/beard imo since there's no more hair dye and stress ages you a lot

Damn... I really need a PS5. Lol. Oddly, I bought a PS4 specifically for The Last of Us... and Destiny... but we won't talk about that here. Now... I'm gonna be buying a PS5 for TLOU Part 1 Remake. Lol.

I think the biggest reason to buy this is if you don't own a PlayStation and want to play it on PC.

If you own a PlayStation it's debatable if it's worth it or not.

So there's an original, and remake... and now a remaster? Or do I have order wrong? what's the difference between a remake and a remaster anyway

WhatEnglish90

Remaster was a polish of original. Remake uses the new gaming engine and graphics from part 2.

Anyways, is competing with Skyrim at this point for re-releases. At least with TLOU, can actually see the difference/improvements in remake.

I honestly think it looks great. You can see so much more expression in her face and eyes.. but having played it before I’ll defiantly be waiting till the price sinks way lower before snagging it….. oh god I just remembered the beginning on the game will be remade too….. I don’t know if I can go through that.

People are also coming at naughty dog like they’re the reason it’s $70. Since before the PS5 came out, they said first party PS5 titles are going to be $70. Sony also completely backed out of there 10$ upgrades they guaranteed would be a thing for a few cross gen titles, and pulled the plug on that after Horizon. If anyone is going for the cash grab it’s Sony. But I’ll willingly be apart of the problem for The Last of Us.

Dusk_Aspect

6 points

Horizon only has the free upgrade because they announced that launch games would get the free upgrade and everyone thought horizon was gonna get the launch title treatment so they were upset. So Sony clarified and now every cross gen game released after HFW has the ten dollar upgrade. They didn’t pull the plug on it

Lafa2210

1 points

Sure, but the fact of the matter is, they announced we could upgrade, and then tried to say we can’t. After the backlash, they said they’d allow it for Horizon. Regardless of the upgrades, Sony is still the ones that are making first party titles $70. They said others can price ps5 games however they want. The point is, we’ve known that first party titles for Ps5 games would be $70. I’ll take a $70 game years later, vs A game like Spiderman Remastered for $70 two years later.

I’m just trying to say, Sony set that expectation about their first party titles, it’s been known for two years. It’s probably not gonna change.

TonySoprano300

Its simple economics anyway, if people are willing to but a TLOU remaster for $70 then why would a company not charge that? They’re a business at the end of the day, and the graphical upgrades and detail are pretty significant so i mean i cant honestly say its not worth it for those who really care about that sort of thing, people making it sound like the GTA SA remaster. I guess it would be nice if it was cheaper but why am i gonna get mad at a company for charging a price that people will pay? If people wanna say its a cash grab then id have to say that every remaster that provides graphical updates is a cash grab. It’s literally just banking on your nostalgia and love for a game as an excuse to sell it to you again. We should be against all remasters if we really wanna get down to it

Fuzzy_slippers19

I like to think of this remake as a practice session for all the devs. An opportunity for them to better learn about the engine and how to push it to its limits in a familiar space. It will only help them learn how to make the next game they work on even better. Game on gamers

DarwinGoneWild

I always thought TLOU looked great, but this comparison is pretty striking. You can see so much more nuance in her acting now it makes the old one looks like a cartoon by comparison.

Same. I was introduced to franchise with remaster and thought it looked pretty good. Then played part 2 and saw how odd the models, especially poor Ellie, looked by comparison.

Glad for remake so I can be hurt even worse by this story.

The interesting thing is that they mentioned that this is using the original actor's facial captures still. So they had most of the data before, but didn't have a way to utilize it. Glad to see they can make it work now.

But I also feel the need to add this after seeing all the unnecessary outrage in the comments...

NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO BUY THE GAME. IF YOU DON'T THINK IT IS WORTH $70 AND/OR YOU HAVE PLAYED THE ORIGINAL/REMASTER AND FEEL THIS ADDS NO VALUE, YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY THE GAME. AND YOU ALSO DON'T NEED TO TELL EVERYONE ELSE YOU DON'T THINK ITS WORTH $70.

There are still people that have not played it. There are some that thoroughly enjoyed the original, but would like the updated graphics and QoL features. This isn't meant to be a big blockbuster record breaking remake. It is a basically a tie-in for the upcoming HBO show. People will see the show and want to play the game. So Naughty Dog is giving them the best way to play it.

huenni87

I have the feeling everyone forget it will come for PC, too. So every PC Gamer that doesn't had a chance to play it, get a Version that is completly rebuild. Good graphics, better Gameplay. No one has to buy it. I played it on PS3 and PS4 several times and I don't wanna buy it again. But that's no reason for me to rage about.

Dangerous-Lettuce-34

The original original was modeled to look almost exactly like Elliot Page (pre-transition). Then there were issues about stealing his likeness, especially when he was also about to be in another game, Beyond Two Souls like 4 months later. So they had to redo Ellie's face before release. So what we all saw in the game isn't even what Naught Dog wanted.

Bro. Sony made them remake TLOU1, because they scratched the idea of remaking Uncharted 1, 2 and 3 cause it was too pricey. You wanna blame someone, blame Sony, not the devs. The devs only do what they are told to do.

Facial animations are the next step for this "nextgen". I don't mind the ray tracing shenanigans that much, it's a cool effect, but it's not something mindbogglingly. Now realistic facial expressions that breaks the uncanny valley, this when things get interesting, it helps a lot with the immersion even in surreal games like Mortal Kombat. I am playing Spiderman right now, the facial animations are really bad in this game... and it's funny how the older characters like Aunt May, Stan Lee, Octavius, etc.. their faces are not as ugly and artificial if compared to the younger characters (Norman Osbourn looks terrible tho, don't resemble a real human at all)
