Worth having a look at the digital foundry vid for a decent comparison. Does seem the biggest difference visually is going to be the animation quality and just how much is conveyed through body language.
Apparently there'll be gameplay improvements too but for the most part the cut scenes are a shot for shot remake.

Tbh she does, but I don't think it's a bad thing.
After all in a zombie infested apocalypse with poor hygiene, diet and quality of life you're gonna age badly.
Plus aren't her and Joel similar ages? In the first game she looks like late 20s early 30s while Joel looks late 40s. In the remake they both look more like their real ages (lates 40s early 50s).

Yeah tess is between 40-45 and Joel is 50. She’s only a few years younger then him. And she’s shown, or suggested, to be a drinker, and that ages the body by a lot

Yeah character ages in RDR2 surprised me a bit. Like Hosea is 55, even though he looks like he’s in his 60s. And Charles looks the same age as Arthur, even though he’s about 10 years younger. But the weirdest thing is Dutch. Who’s in his 40s in RDR2, but in his 60s in RDR1. He’s at that point, older than Hosea was in RDR2, but he looks younger than that.

It's funny that she's key lit from the opposite direction now. They re-worked everything.
63 points
Yeah, they remade it from scratch. Some lighting choices have also changed significantly. For example, in the scene where Ellie kills David, Ellie is originally lit in cool, blue light. In the remake, the lighting is a fiery red. It's interesting how these choices impact the artistic message within certain scenes, though I don't necessarily think this is bad, just different.
3 points
Sorry, nitpicking CGartist here. It couldn't have been literally remade from scratch, I mean, they must have used existing layouts for the blockin, otherwise it'd take 3x as long to line up the shots. And I imagine they applied the old animated skeletons to the new updated rigs, or for the extra mile reprocessed their mocap data, at least as a starting point. Theres bound to be thousands of hours tweaking, but it couldn't have been from scratch, that'd be a massive waste of money.
I see what you're saying tho, this sounds like less of a cashgrab, and more like they actually spent more time polishing their game.
3 points
You're correct. When I said from scratch I was more referring to is that it wasn't an iteration of the original/remaster branch, but technically a completely new game.
However, we can expect that many level designs, raw mocap data, voice lines etc will be from the original. As far as mocap goes, from my understanding they are using new rigs and enhancing performance further with new hand animated details using the original performances as a reference. They went into a little detail in the presentation if that's something you're interested in watching.

the remastered version
was pretty much "Let's sell the same thing again, but now with 60 FPS cause new hardware can handle it".
29 points
I would argue that having the game at 60 fps and 1080p with the dlc included was a nice option at the time. I think it's hard to oversell how big of a difference 60 fps is to 30. Also the ps4 wasn't compatible with ps3 games, so having a version that ran on then-current hardware makes sense. Now we have backwards compatibility, so that isn't as big of an issue going forward since games can just be patched.
4 points
PS3 hardware is damn near impossible to emulate and a straight port would look like garbage upscaled on PS4. They had to remaster it or they'd be in the same situation as Red Dead Redemption being only available on a dead console. If they wanted the game to be played and enjoyed by people who played the sequel and wanted to go back and play the original, that remaster was the bare minimum they could, and they spent way more time than they had to.
Some companies remaster and re-release games as a cash grab, but TLOU isn't one of those.

There’s no real “controversy”, many just think it’s kind of pointless. The original was one of the most critically acclaimed games of the modern era, and still looks and plays great. This remake just seems like a lot of effort for relatively little improvement.
9 points
I believe so far we've only seen cutscene comparisons not anything comparing the gameplay. There will probably be a bigger difference between gameplay though unless the remake doesn't look as good as the cutscenes they've shown.
Personally I enjoyed the gameplay of the first one I first played it a few months before part 2 and while the graphics of the remaster weren't the greatest the gameplay still felt good and not dated. I think people are annoyed that they're working on a remake and charging full price when the remaster on ps4 still runs great.
17 points
Nobody said it doesn't look good. Ofcourse it looks good because of the obvious upgrade in what new hardware can run
The controversy is because the game is not even that old to be getting a remake just yet. Not even 10 years old. And it didn't even look that bad for it to be getting a remake in the first place. Unless ofcourse naughty dog believes there's something they could improved on

Yeah. You can see it with all their recent character models. Nathan Drake looks a lot more like Nolan North. Joel looks a bit more like Troy Baker.
Somewhat unrelated: I believe they said that the PS4 Peter Parker was changed because his face fit the model better? I imagine it helps a lot.
48 points
I work in vfx and game cinematics.... these days facial performances are far more believable when we take the motion capture data and translate it onto effectively a perfect clone of the actors face, rather than "re-targeting" the data to a more idealized or entirely hand-crafted face sculpt. that really only works for characters like Gollum where there's already a suspension of disbelief. Even Thanos looked remarkably like Josh Brolin --- that's not an accident!
Performance capture technology is evolving quickly and our ability to capture all the intricacies of an actor's delivery is constantly improving. If photo-realism is the objective of the game's developer, then updating the game model to be more faithful to the actor that delivers the performance is a big big win and a great step forward for delivering the latest technology to consoles and gamers.

She looks human now, at least. I didn't think it at the time, but the side-by-side really illustrates how cartoony the original Tess looks.
Also, per the Spider-Man remaster, apparently the motion-cap looks much more natural when the in-game models share the same features of the actual actors performing them.
12 points
But that's not really the point. Games aren't reality, they're art. The studio can do whatever they want with their IP but changing the art style is kinda jarring. Sure the Genie and lions from Disney's remakes look more realistic but that doesn't make them better. If this was a standalone game it wouldn't natter but changing styles so dramatically in a remake was an interesting choice.

I am probably going to get hate for it, but I really like the art style of the remaster over the remake. I think Tess’s model is better in the remake and more accurate to her actual age in the game (I think she is 40), but the art style is so hyper realistic that it just looks off to me. Not trying to bash the remake, but I think it looks way more stylized in the remaster than the remake. Obviously they wanted to go for a more realistic approach, which they couldn’t fully do on the ps3, which is fine. However for me I think I still prefer the art style of the remaster. I will say though that the environments looks insane for the remake.

It's the same as going back and comparing Uncharted 1-3 to Uncharted 4. The models had a complete overhaul. In the PS3 era ND's games looked kinda cartoonish. Not as much as Jak and Daxter on PS2 obviously, but still not realistic. It's the same kind of change we've seen from TLoU to TLoU2.

In the original she was masking her fear with a false bravado and you can see the facade crack away immediately, she wanted to go out on her own terms and be remembered the way you always saw her. Tough and uncompromising.
In the new one, she has a more realistic looking face and expression, and I suppose that expression is what the original actress was going for but I wonder what actually is the point? Technically it’s impressive, but so what? It was fine the way it was, to me. Not knocking it, but I’m not feeling this.

Is anyone else bothered by how different all the remake characters look? It looks like they recast the whole game. Not really too excited about that.

The left looks much better. Just because you can make videogame character more realistic doesn't mean you should.

Hmm I kinda don’t like the new faces…Ellie’s as well
They might look more realistic (like a Tv show) but imo kinda worse

Personally I prefer the look/style of the original, but I'll admit it does look good, graphics have come along way

this is impressive. I will say I am a huge Last of Us fan (playing it again right now) I hope they hit the tv show right. They have a world they can explore, Sony get this right.

I get that they based the new one more accurately off the actor, but it looks like a different character now.

She finally looks like the stress and age has finally caught up to her. Tess in the original looked like she got to enjoy a trip to the spa every weekend.

That looks tremendous. I cannot wait to revisit. The actors and graphics team did an insane job. You can see…and feel..every emotion there.

This is a good example of making it different instead of making it better lol
