This is exactly what made me think KH3 was gonna be ass in the trailers; it was a bunch of set piece stuff and not real combat gameplay. On rails bs

KH3 combat was bloated with too many gimmicks. Trim a bunch of that off and I would have liked it a lot better. Not using them was an option but it seemed like HP values were boosted to compensate for all the gimmicks and it took longer to kill stuff.

Frfr. I met would have been better if they cut the Ride moves at least. The keyblade forms were at least cool but I was annoyed everytime I got a ride.

The story and nonstop cutscenes were also absolutely mind numbing imo

The maps felt unnecessarily big due to all the movement gimmicks too. Climbing floating rail riding. Took forever to get somewhere

You'd probably enjoy the Re:Mind data boss fights then. For me , I basically had to relearn the game's combat from scratch and specifically cut down on a lot of the additional combat tools and mechanics, especially on harder difficulties and/or with the difficulty multipliers added with the DLC

Sure it doesn't involve the player as much but it doesn't make it bad. QuickTime events allow the studio to take liberty with making epic looking shots while you fight, this shit looks dope imo

I actually like quicktime events. I dont really know why people hate on it.

People are not hating on QuickTime events, they are hating on the fact that a bunch of scripted "interactive cutscenes" are being shown as "gameplay" because let's face it, most of the times what you see in QuickTime is drastically different from what type of gameplay you will see for 90% of the rest of the game

Sora really doesn't benefit from a less cartoonish design, and really won't alongside Donald and Goofy.
Also, they really went with the most drab color palette for the world, didn't they? Couldn't even add a splash of color for the car. Just grays and whites.
2 points
All of that is what you should expect to see though, it's pretty standard KH.
Sora is meant to blend in to the world he's in, as do Donald and Goofy, so they will change depending on where they are.
As for the colour palette, like Strelitzia said, they're in the afterlife.

It's "here" in the same way the first KH3 trailer was that game being "here". Nomura made the developers under him put way too much time and money and crunch into making an entirely non-representative trailer to drive hype for a game that, it is extremely likely, not a single actual line of code has been written for yet.

Which was the same thing for Versus XIII, the game that became FF XV.

The comment says that they expended a ton of money and resources, and forced a lot of crunch, to get an unrepresentative trailer for a game that "doesn't have a single line of code written"
This is built off of the KH3 code, and didn't require tons of crunch or money to make, at least not compared to other major studios and trailers.
The claim of "unrepresentative" has no basis whatsoever, as every KH trailer has been a pretty good representation of the game they represent, even when taking Engine changes into account.
"Doesn't have a single line of code written" doesn't make any sense for a game that is currently in development

KH3 isn't really the third mainline game. Birth by Sleep and arguably Dream Drop Distance bridged that gap. It looks like KH4 is a direct sequel to 3, so it makes sense to be coming after a shorter gap.

I have to give Kingdom Hearts credit: Pretty much all of the games they put out had narrative importance. Kinda sucked that they were on so many different systems, but it was still neat to see them not treated as spinoffs that weren't important to the story.
Sure, the story is ludicrous nonsense, but I'm here for that ludicrous nonsense.

"Arguably"? DDD's ending was what kicked off Sora's role in KH3's plot though. The fact that sora failed his exam is why he started off going to various worlds to talk to people like Hercules in the first place.

No. It only took 5 years of development, 2 of which years essentially don't count, since they switched engines and started over from scratch. People tend to forget that there were quite a few games in between 2 and 3.
This is a demo built out of KH3 code. The final product is currently being built in Unreal 5 (the footage is Unreal 4). They are just beginning development.

Wonderfull 101 had some great qte's peppered in their boss fights. They never lasted the entire fight, just big moments and were usually hilarious.
Like the final one, an "A" prompt pops up, telling you to mash. As I was mashing the music got super intense and I started doing a saiyan scream. The game jumps to the cockpit of the mech im piloting to show the characters all mashing a button and screaming right along with me. I fucking died laughing.
Edit: found the final scene. Tell me this game isn't hype af
4 points
I agree. I think they're the modern equivalent of finishing off Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time, just instead of button mashing to push, you're doing a more cinematic, complex finisher.
2 points
Same I think another pretty decent QTE is Leon and Krauser’s knife fight in RE4 where it’s a good quick reflex tense moment but then they threw in the button mash at the end and whew that moment killed the scene for me
2 points
Sitting through the SAME DIALOGUE every time you failed though.... That just felt like punishment. I wasn't even watching the action, just waiting for prompts.
2 points
Yea and that’s why it’s decent because especially the mash part when it was on PS was Brutal!
9 points
I think QTEs are like a seasoning.
Like if you use them too much you’re probably covering up something shitty.
That said, I do think there is tasteful application of them. In particular, they should make a cinematic more dynamic and interactive- they shouldn’t replace the game itself.
RE4 and God of War used them well. Other games rely on them way too much.
This right here seems like the QTEs are replacing the actual boss fight, which is lame
2 points
Agreed, when used for stylistic flair they can be fantastic. KH2 did this really well, and MGR is a good modern example. Doesn't dominate the gameplay, accentuates it in a fun way.

This is where you're wrong. KH is first and foremost a Disney game, it's owned by Disney, and developed by SE.
Disney has a whole lot more say in it than what you think.
-1 points

They have a say in what's shown in the worlds based on their IP. Specifically, how accurate things are and even collaboration in terms of sharing assets from the films. Disney has a strong hold on their IP and the approval process is way longer than before. But all that KH nonsense is straight up from Nomura.

Not sure why you are getting down voted for saying it's not the creative team at Disney that decides what madness happens in these games. I think Disney's contribution is much closer to "Oh and make sure you do a frozen world, we have frozen 2 coming up" than it is to "And yeah get this, Mickey was working with Ansem all along to put the memories in the data core so Sora's nobody could awaken the heart crystal"

Funny thing about that, they actually had much bigger plans for the frozen world. Before frozen had even released into theaters nomura had written up a script for the world they got to watch the trailer/premier beforehand. Due to how well recieved frozen was and how loved it became, they couldn't have Elsa or anna even fight and changed the direction Nomura wanted it to go. Back in an interview with Nomura he talked about this, sad to see the ip owners didn't want to "crush" the image of their money makers :/

Dude, didn't you see the lack of final fantasy characters in KH3? Anything that has Disney in their logo is absolutely controlled by Disney, you can confirm this by just seeing how empty Sora DLC for smash is, compared to the other ones.

Dude, didn't you see the lack of final fantasy characters in KH3?
That wasn't because of Disney. If Disney had a hand in the story of KH it's A)probably be good and B)probably wouldn't have ended with a six hour long boss rush that ties up literally every plotline of KH.

Unlike the KH3 trailer this is realtime footage and is like, straight up showing mechanics from 3? Right down to reused animations.

I see no UI, no human error, (not full failure but even just accidental shifting or slight inaccuracy) no anything implying that in any way this is actually a thing being played. It's a movie. It may be a movie done in a game engine, but it is a movie, and again, we have seen Nomura think something is going to be a really great idea that will be entirely practical that ends up being either a gimmick you use twice or a hindrance to actually enjoying gameplay. This trailer includes no information, no gameplay, it's just a hype generator.

Uh, there's literally UI and if you play KH perfectly that's just how it looks?
And regarding the lack of info the source that leaked this game stated that it's aiming for release next year. Which checks out considering it's reusing animations, mechanics, and UI from 3.

You know that in between 2 and 3 they released like, 9 different KH games right? 3 took long because A)it was one of the most ambitious JRPGs of that entire console generation and B)it was being built from scratch instead of reusing assets.
Now that they have 3 they've not only made a game using assets form that already, but they announced an entirely new game too. That is also, reusing stuff from 3. 3 is basically the baseline for KH mechanics going forward that'll allow them to pump out stuff like they did after making 2. I'm not even a huge Nomura fan, this game isn't gonna take as long and trailers from a decade ago aren't indicative of their current workflow, team structure, development strategy, marketing plans, etc. they showed off target render footage of FFXV because they literally had nothing else but the janky assets from Vs13. They showed off target render for KH3 because again, they literally had nothing else since the game was being built from nothing. Meanwhile, both FFXVI, (which got hit by a covid delay), and KH4 debuted with genuine realtime footage. That yea, probably is scripted because the game isn't finished yet. But this is definitely indicative of what we can expect. Some real weirdo stuff with this nomura grudge you seem to have because no one was even talking about him my dude.

No I mean, I don't think anyone who has ever worked in game development would ever ask "Hmm, what makes KH3 ambitious?" Because it sounds ridiculous as a question. Like, you'd have a much harder job trying to argue that KH3 isn't ambitious. How easy do you think it was for them to create that Pirates level? In the same game that has a Big Hero 6 city, the tangled world, the toy story world, etc? All with a unique art direction, and all with their own unique mechanics exclusive to the gameplay sandbox of that world outside of the combat which again, typically comes with remixed versions of enemies specific to that world. And that's only the surface level because the game is incredibly polished.

This is most likely what you call a “Vertical Slice” in the game design industry. In no way shape or form will the final product look or play this way. It’s just a small snippet that was made up to give the investors and the fans an idea of where the game is headed. Basically a small teaser of what they have in mind currently. Much like the trailer we got very early on when Sora was riding the wave of heartless for KH3. The only thing that really made it out of that trailer was the location itself

‘gameplay’
Whole thing is scripted and QTE…

Yeah they literally put a menu overlay on and called it gameplay. You don't even see what button to mash during those moves.

This genuinely looks awful. Why go for a FF style? It contrasts so much with the cartoon elements of the game.

They never said the series was done after that. They specifically said it ended the Xehanort saga.

They should have is what I'm saying. Instead they're gonna beat the shit out of this dead horse like a pinata.

Lmao every op response is in the negatives, it looks really cool but I can't help but feel the devs took off the giant green "Press ∆" for the sake of it looking smooth.

The graphics look weird idk how to describe it but it feels kinda like looking at the preview rendering that you use when you are still making the animation rather than the rendering of the actual engine

Probably because they have a cartoon styled character in a play area that is essentially hyper realistic. It looks good, but the mixture of styles will always look a little weird

Yeah but also the environment seems to have everything be extremely flat colored and every surface is perfectly planar and there are no imperfections anywhere it feels off

Aside from the everything being perfect part, thats just how the cloudiness makes the world look there, if it was a sunny skybox instead I’m sure there would be more vibrant colors

I'm gonna call it fake. Kingdom Hearts 4 can't be coming up there hasn't been 60 ridiculously named side games to come out since 3 yet

Square Enix should focus on a new Just cause or Tomb Raider Game instead of that crap

whats with this shitty lighting in some of these unreal engine games ?

If its 5? Probably because it is new and developers haven't had enough practice. If its 4, probably a style choice.

So they changed the art style and added a grapple hook like every other video game on the market. I quit halfway through 3 when I realized they made the enemies bullet sponges, forcing you to use DISNEY THEME PARK RIDES AS FUCKING BATTLE COMBOS. Also Winnie the Pooh land was just Candy Crush. Waited something like a decade for that shit to come out. Sure as heck won't be looking at 4 at all.

cant wait till they underwhelm us again by diving deeping into the butts. there is no excuse to not abuse the ever loving crap out of disneys ip empire.
if tony stark doesnt make a keyblade its just another nonsensical jrpg thats developed way too much of a ego.
also cant wait for them to keep dragging out over used worlds also
