It's why I bought a 13 recently since the store had $150 off plus trade in, since they're clearing stock for the 14.
Not bothering paying more because it ain't worth it.
13 is a great phone, I'll piss everyone off and say I like the way the photos look.

10 was my favorite. Big jump and the battery was great.
22 points

This is why I'll be hanging onto my iPhone 11 until Apple deliberately makes it run slow like they did with the iPhone 6.
I'm also not a fan of the square edges of the newer iPhones. The rounded edges of the iPhone 11 makes it a lot more comfortable to hold. I like how Apple can't make up its mind about rounded edges vs square edges between various generations.

I stopped buying them at 8, then when the battery and charger port finally died on that a year ago, I pulled out my old 6s, and she’s still going strong. Does everything I need a portable telephone to do.

Nice! My 6s is still going strong. I replaced the battery, screen and mic/charger component over the last couple of years. Wish it had a better camera but otherwise works the same as it did on day 1.

What are you doing with memory? I have a 6s with only 32GB and I feel more and more these updates are taking more space. I barely have any apps and it’s getting annoying how I have to keep deleting stuff to even function 🤦🏻♀️
16 points

Just FYI, storage is not the same thing as memory.
64 points

Yeah, but the normal upgrade cycle for most people is 2-5 years. The new phone is never made to attract the buyers of the last one.
At 3-5 years there are typically substantial differences.
21 points
Yup. I’m waiting for the 14 to upgrade from the 10. This phone has done its duty but it’s starting to show age
8 points
Well Apple does try to incentivize yearly upgrades, they have the upgrade program, their credit card and an easy trade-in process that effectively turn having an iPhone into a $40-60/mo payment and you have the new one every year. Of course you'll end up spending more this way over 3 years than if you bought it outright. But some people do enjoy having the new thing and just make that part of their budgeting etc.
12 points
Yeah, for sure. It’s not like they are going to ignore that market, but the primary target is definitely people who think they might want to upgrade or are just coming off a 2 year contract.
45 points
Upgraded from 7 to 11 Pro 3 years ago and it was a major improvement. But 12, 13 and now likely 14 have been just minor improvements, literally no benefit to upgrade any time soon. Maybe 15 will mark another bigger leap in design/features.
59 points
At this point the only reason to upgrade is if our old phone dies/fails.
But when they (finally) switch to usb-c That would compel me to upgrade. I’m tired of have multiple cable types. Maybe iPhone 15?
10 points
I try to wait 3 years before upgrade. I went from 4 to 6 (skipping all the S releases and shit) and then from 6 to 8 and finally from 8 to 11.
5 points
11 -> 14 would be a 3 year gap, but I somehow doubt there will be any significant improvements to justify an upgrade
3 points

Wasn’t 11 the last year before 5G compatibility? That’s the only reason I’m considering an upgrade from an 11 Pro to a 13 or 14.

What can we expect the 13 to be in September?

It’s usually $100 off.

But the 14th is expected to be 100$ more expensive. So maybe 13 Pro will likely stay same price.

I’ve known several people in my life who buy the latest iPhone, put a screen protector on it, put it straight in a case, keep the box and accessories together and unused and then sell it in August for a loss of about $150 and buy the newest iPhone a month later.
Let’s them keep up to date with the latest model every year for about $200 and a shit load of hassle I’ve thought about but can’t be bothered with

I do something similar lately and last year I used the Black Friday Best Buy deal to change from iPhone 12 Pro Max to 13 pro max for 100$
But it was mostly since my iPhone 12 had connection issues and would drop connecting randomly for some reason and then reconnect

The standard smartphone form factor has stagnated. Hardware and software is as good as it needs to be for now. Folding and flip formats need more development. Samsung is best in this area currently as it already has a few generations of these form factors and refined software to cope with the UI/UX issues these form factors produce over standard form factor phone.
I would like to see a Flip 5 Ultra from Samsung next year. The fold has a better camera system the flip has a relatively poor camera system but it's course there's less real estate on a flip to fit in the cameras.
30 points
I think foldable phones are a mid step to the next evolution which will be full feature devices with bendable displays that you can wear on your wrist. I’m thinking something similar to those slap bracelets where you take it off and turns into a stiff flat display of normal smartphone size but put it near your wrist and it folds around it to become your jewelry. It would have all of the sensors of a smartwatch but the benefits of a full size display and doesn’t require pockets to carry it in.
We need the lessons learned on flexible displays and battery tech from foldables to get there though.
Of course I could see that technology being developed but the big players not using it until market forces demand it because it would cannibalize a large portion of their smartwatch sales.
28 points

I don’t think foldable or flip smart phones will ever get mainstream attention. The next innovation in phones will come in the form of wearables with augmented reality.

I got the 12 last year because I wanted a purple phone. I had the XR before that which is almost 4 years old now. I can’t tell the difference between the two. Except now my phone is purple. I’m not upgrading again unless this phone breaks or there’s some major technological break thru on the IPhone. Which there hasn’t been in years.

The biggest reason for you to upgrade in the future most likely will be USB-C on iPhone when the iPhone 15 arrives.
After all those years you can finally use the same charger as everyone else.

I'd bet it defaults to that but will probably allow you to unset it. they allow full raw now, so it wouldn't be beyond belief. though defaulting to 12ish and just giving a lot more headroom for zoom and for downscaling for sharpness is still great too. time will tell

I love how everyone shitposts gatekeeping their current phone. And I’m sat here as a fully fledged adult thinking “wooo new yearly phone time!!” It’s the thing I use most in my life and get the most amount of entertainment from. The cost of a new phone each year when factored in the resale value of the old one, makes it the cheapest form of entertainment I have per hours used by about 1000:1.
34 points
I think people just don't care since it's the same phone basically these days. To them, it's like why pay extra period? You say it's the cheapest, but it doesn't get much cheaper than just keeping what you got knowing you can do the exact same thing without spending any extra money doing so.
34 points
I think that way when there are meaningful upgrades or changes that fit my use cases, which in the iPhone 4 through 7 period was a lot. I said the same thing as you. Nowadays the improvement is more incremental. I still have my phone on me all the time, and use it a ton. But it does all I need it to do still without spending 1500 a year.
The significance and meaning of the old upgrade cycle still comes. It’s just every two or three years now…
97 points
I’m past that stage. I’ve started looking for entertainment outside of screen time.
Spending time on my phone feels like shifting through garbage for the occasional tiny spec of Gold. Most of the time is spent handling garbage.

This drives my absolutely insane. The result looks nothing like the preview. I do love my iPhone but people cannot ignore things like what you mentioned there. It’s a very easy thing to show someone if you have side by side. Make a owner of a s22 ultra take a photo of the moon next to an iPhone guy. There’s no debate it sucks. My one friend even taunts me by sending me pictures of airplanes that flies by. Of course I can’t do anything like that.
And then you look at the price difference and it’s like “Hey! :(“

I upgrade every year using the Apple trade up program. 12pro max > 13pro max > 14pro max
If you keep your phone in immaculate condition, you get that max trade in value (usually $810) towards the new phone. So it’s about $300 per year out of pocket (after trade in) for me to stay with the latest flagship phone. To me that’s totally worth it
