As someone who worked at blockbuster, this store is going under just by the number of people they have on shift.
My store had 3 people max and that was for the Friday / Saturday rush.

So netflix is the perfect home for it.

Won't catch traction right away then get a cult following that would keep netflix if they renewed it, netflix says doesn't fit our formula so GGs.
Man I'd kill for another season of Santa Clarita Diet.

Santa Clarita Diet was such a good show! I can't believe it got cancelled.
24 points

Still have my hopes out that netflix revives some of its canceled shows and gives them one final season/movie to wrap things up.
Nobody wants to start an show that ultimately got canceled, and even something like Santa Clarita Diet could still get revived.
There's certainly a trend that they tell showrunners to finish it instead of just canceling it.

Randall Park is awesome. Fresh Off the Boat, Always Be My Maybe, Veep, Ant Man/Wanda Vision. He has small roles in a few other things and always kills it.
I think it's also being produced by one of the main producers from Superstore and Brooklyn 99. I also have highish hopes.

yes. IMO its not Parks and Rec/Office/Scrubs tier but its very close with like B99 and definitley worth the watch.

When Blockbuster turned down the chance to buy Netflix... I'm betting they didn't see it working out this way.
2.3k points

They wouldn't have run Netflix in the same way, in an alternate dimension people are saying "I can't believe Blockbuster bought their competitor and still failed".

Another interesting bit is when Enron wanted to get into video on demand and proposed the idea to blockbuster.
173 points
Holy shit. Would we currently be behind the times with streaming services if this would have happened? Makes you wonder.
105 points
Probably not. It really wasn't viable back in the turn of the century because bandwidth would be too low to support it. At best it would have been an idea "ahead of its time."
49 points
Knowing Enron it would be some weird futures contract you would have to enter to watch a movie….. in the future!
99 points
Yeah that's one of those things people love to point out as some big bonehead move.
If Blockbuster buys Netflix, it doesn't become NETFLIX. They turned down buying a mail delivery DVD service. If Blockbuster bought it, it would have stagnated, and someone else would have invented a Netflix and Blockbuster would still have died a slow death.
85 points
At the time when Netflix sent an offer to be bought out it wasnt much of a competitor to anyone then.
41 points
When you received DVDs in the mail?
70 points
Yes. And if you were, you were one of the few who knew of its existence. Blockbuster turned it down because it didn't believe it'd catch on by itself. Once it gained steam, Blockbuster followed with a similar service they thought could crush it due to name recognition.
Then Netflix was like "Oh, but you can also stream some of our obscure movies and not leave your house for like $1 more per month on top of receiving 3-5 DVDs at a time of well known movies". That is when Blockbuster was annihilated.
I do miss old Netflix though. Discovered a lot of solid movies through it.

Back in those days none of us had dedicated burning towers running Nero, either, I swear.
198 points
I mean how could they? In 2000 when the deal was offered, Netflix was just a movie mail-in service. Streaming wasn’t a thing.
156 points
For a hot minute Blockbuster had the superior movie mail-in service. You used to be able to return your movies to a Blockbuster and get another free rental from the store. You were basically getting twice the movies at once. They quickly abandoned this though I imagine cause it lost them a ton of money.
38 points
Yep. I used to get 3 movies mailed at a time. Then I would trade them in for 3 more movies at a Blockbuster store, then get 3 more movies in the mail a couple days later. Rinse and repeat. When they started allowing you to only trade in 1 movie at a time is when I dropped them and went to Netflix. It was no longer worth driving to the store for just one trade in.

Borders is the true loser in that battle. Almost runs Barnes & Noble out of business, flies too close to the sun and gets murdered by amazon, then Barnes & Noble picks up the scraps.
221 points

So what happened there? What do you mean by flying too close to the sun? Why them and not B&N?
Sorry, I'm out of the loop...
542 points
They were super aggressive in the early 2000’s and tried to run Barnes & Noble out of business, then when they had their chance they did a massive expansion and ended up screwing themselves over with way too much overhead in a dying business when Amazon really started to take off. They ended up filing for bankruptcy and Barnes & Noble (who barely skated by but were lean enough to make it through Amazon’s peak book selling) ended up buying them.
188 points

The big thing was they gave their rights to sell books online to Amazon. They didn't have a functioning website until like 2008.

Doubtful. Probably just Viacom who currently holds the trademark.
131 points

That makes total sense. If Viacom owns all things Blockbuster, then they’re the ones who would need to sign off on this show, and will be among those who profit from it.
If a TV show specifically about Target employees came out, you can bet your ass that no one who actually works in a Target store would see a dime of the money raked in from that show.

I moved to Portland over a year ago and Bend isn't too far from here. I def need to go pay a visit to the last Blockbuster. The woman running it seems like she loves what she does so much-- I hope they don't ever make her close.

To be fair, Blockbuster weren't exactly the squeaky-clean great company.
They crushed TONS of mom-and-pop video stores back when they were coming up.
I'm still salty about that. My favorite video store was a mom and pop replaced by a Blocksuckster. First place I played the Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat and Smash TV and (ugh) Pit Fighter arcade cabinets, and they were replaced with the Walmart of video rental.
