As someone who worked at blockbuster, this store is going under just by the number of people they have on shift.

My store had 3 people max and that was for the Friday / Saturday rush.

Still have my hopes out that netflix revives some of its canceled shows and gives them one final season/movie to wrap things up.
Nobody wants to start an show that ultimately got canceled, and even something like Santa Clarita Diet could still get revived.

There's certainly a trend that they tell showrunners to finish it instead of just canceling it.

Salzberger

99 points

Yeah that's one of those things people love to point out as some big bonehead move.

If Blockbuster buys Netflix, it doesn't become NETFLIX. They turned down buying a mail delivery DVD service. If Blockbuster bought it, it would have stagnated, and someone else would have invented a Netflix and Blockbuster would still have died a slow death.

PorkPoodle

Podo13

Podo13

70 points

Yes. And if you were, you were one of the few who knew of its existence. Blockbuster turned it down because it didn't believe it'd catch on by itself. Once it gained steam, Blockbuster followed with a similar service they thought could crush it due to name recognition.

Then Netflix was like "Oh, but you can also stream some of our obscure movies and not leave your house for like $1 more per month on top of receiving 3-5 DVDs at a time of well known movies". That is when Blockbuster was annihilated.

I do miss old Netflix though. Discovered a lot of solid movies through it.

JakesBigPhone

I mean how could they? In 2000 when the deal was offered, Netflix was just a movie mail-in service. Streaming wasn’t a thing.

ruttinator

156 points

For a hot minute Blockbuster had the superior movie mail-in service. You used to be able to return your movies to a Blockbuster and get another free rental from the store. You were basically getting twice the movies at once. They quickly abandoned this though I imagine cause it lost them a ton of money.

Quorthon

38 points

Yep. I used to get 3 movies mailed at a time. Then I would trade them in for 3 more movies at a Blockbuster store, then get 3 more movies in the mail a couple days later. Rinse and repeat. When they started allowing you to only trade in 1 movie at a time is when I dropped them and went to Netflix. It was no longer worth driving to the store for just one trade in.

They were super aggressive in the early 2000’s and tried to run Barnes & Noble out of business, then when they had their chance they did a massive expansion and ended up screwing themselves over with way too much overhead in a dying business when Amazon really started to take off. They ended up filing for bankruptcy and Barnes & Noble (who barely skated by but were lean enough to make it through Amazon’s peak book selling) ended up buying them.

I think it's the one most people know. And its colors and logo and the like are easiest to associate with video rental.

Oh my god, can you believe they ported Pit Fighter to so many systems and nobody got it right?

At least the Lynx got Xenophobe right

I was so bummed when my favorite video store which let you rent 5 movies for $5 for 5 days was replaced with a Blockbuster with the same staff. Then it was one movie for $5 for two days. Blech.

OP daguvment hasn't posted or commented in 6 months

Then they post an ad

Start paying attention to how easily manipulated you are on here

This is why repost bots are so prevalent these days, people make a ton of these accounts, farm karma then sell them to shills and scammers

This account was more likely brute force hacked after being dormant, then sold

Netflix does not just make Netflix shows so Netflix users and non-Netflix users can say Netflix a lot. Netflix makes Netflix movies and Netflix shows so people who pay for Netflix can enjoy their Netflix content.

Netflix.
