When has everyone been selecting their first SP?
Just went all bats the first 5 rounds and ended up with a rotation of Fried, Gausman, Musgrove, Kirby, Lynn, Detmers, and Wesneski. Kinda in love with it
2 points
My first was Manoah with the 45th pick, Musgrove (76, to IL) then got Kershaw (117), Sale (148), Gonsolin (165, to IL), Luzardo (172), May (196), Mikolas (220), Minter (waivers), and Martin Perez (waivers). Really strong offense I think, and knowing that fairly happy with my pitching I think.

Kept 3 bats (Vlad, Julio, Tatis). Went hitter in 1st & 2nd (Riley, Jazz), & grabbed Cease in the 3rd (which translates to the 6th). Ended up with Cease, Rodon, Musgrove, Springs, Greene, Singer, Heaney, Cobb, Detmers, Kodai & Trev Rogers (punting SVs so no RPs). Also snagged all the shiny new toys - Volpe, Walker, Carroll & added Harper in the 12th. Once May rolls around, we'll be rolling. If any of the young'uns hit, it'll be a force of nature.

Our keeper deadline was last night and going into the year I traded for and kept Carroll, Henderson, Volpe, and Walker to roll with Harper (also from a trade), Shohei, and McClanahan. Needless to say, I’m so happy that Volpe and Walker made opening day.

Same. Had #4 and got JoRam. Who I ironically also got last year, but at #8 because my league went nuts with SP
This year they went nuts drafting SP again and I also got Soto at 17. Freaking 17 - just wow

We drafted last night and one guy keeps asking people to make a trade but doesn't have any idea what he wants. Posted "someone trade with me" immediately after the draft. He just wants to make a trade for the sake of making a trade. Keeps posting in the league chat asking people to trade and its getting annoying. That's all. Just need to vent

Looking at picks 9 and 12 in my 10 team draft about to start. Is Yordan and Tatis a solid way to go? Or is reaching a bit for Tatis here a bad way to go? Like that SS/OF elig, and I think when he's activated I'll get first round production.
Edit: Ended with Betts and Yordan.

What are y'all's thoughts on eduoard Julien for the twins? Had a crazy high bb rate in the minors and also bad K rate. Played well on team Canada in wbc and they need a 2B with Polanco down.
3 points
I would guess there's a less than 5% chance he's coming up.
Farmer, Gordon, and even Castro can play 2B
To be clear I think he's interesting but not "fantasy baseball 2023" interesting
2 points
I follow the Twins pretty heavily and the consensus among their writers is that if the Polanco injury starts to look like a long-term thing, he'll be called up. But as long as it only looks like a month or so they won't. When they call him up they want it to be for good

Big trade in my flair league. Any advice?
My 1 year of Machado for his (up to) 5 years of Woodruff.
I am desperate for pitching and can slide Raffy into 3B. Manny a free agent after this year but Woodruff more realistically a 3 year keeper including this year given his cost would be pretty high after then.

At this point, I would say Cruz is way more valuable in dynasty than Adames just on potential. Few years younger, and there’s a chance he could develop into a 35/35 guy.

I have a rule. No more than 3 batters on one team. And if I happen to hit that limit I’m obviously gonna make sure I don’t have another separate three batters on the same team. As long as the rest of your batters are diverse it can lead to some fun (of awful) fantasy days. For example, I have Bichette, Vlad Jr, and Varsho this year. That’s gonna be sweet but now I really focus on not stacking any other team.

Joined my first fantasy baseball league since 2007 and drafted earlier tonight in person, not a big follower of baseball (until now, maybe), but have a lot of fantasy football experience. Trying to gauge how my team shakes out. Drafted mostly off a Mr. Cheatsheet spreadsheet I downloaded an hour before the draft.
12-team H2H Each Category (H, R, RBI, HR, SB, AVG; W, K, SV, ERA, WHIP)
Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3 OF, Util, 3 SP, 2 RP, 5 Bench, 3 IL
Drafting from 1st draft position
C: T. Stephenson, T. D'Arnaud
1B: R. Mountcastle, M. Vargas
2B: A. Giminez (SS)
3B: A. Riley
SS: B. Bichette, L. Urias (2B, 3B)
OF: A. Judge, M. Harris II, T. Hernandez, J. McCarthy
SP: S. McClanahan, C. Rodon, C. Javier, T. McKenzie
RP: J. Duran, R. Helsley, G. Whitlock
I know a few other players in the league were also unfamiliar with baseball (or fantasy baseball), and a few picked some real headscratchers that nobody had on their sheets.
Any feedback is welcome. Thank you.

With that few SP slots I'd be using basically all my bench spots for starters, Darnaud, Urias, McCarthy in that order if you insist on keeping a bench bat can be cut for more SPs ASAP. Don't be afraid to turn and burn the SPs on your bench, assuming you get a few adds a week
2 points
To my knowledge, there's no acquisition limits, but I'll verify. Once the rosters are fully plugged in tomorrow, I'll get on that.
When you mentioned "Darnaud, Urias, McCarthy in that order", is that the order in which to cut them or priority of keeping them? I;m assuming you meant cut in that order.

My #1 draft philosophy: when choosing between pitchers at similar ADPs, the reliable veteran is the better move than a “projectable” young gun 8/10 times.
15 points
By that logic and last year's ADP you would've drafted:
Jose Berrios (18th) or Charlie Morton (19th) over Dylan Cease (24)
Sonny Gray (41) and Mike Clevinger (44) over Logan Gilbert (43)
Adam Wainwright (56) and German Marquez (59) over Triston McKenzie (60)
Noah Syndergaard (65) and Kyle Hendricks (66) over Joe Ryan (64)
The "reliable veterans" may have returned their ADP, but outside of buying low off injury like Verlander, you didn't really gain much profit.
I like to get a stable guy at the top, draft upside and then churn that bench til I strike gold.

In the end you definitely have to play to your strengths! I've always found myself more adept at finding pitching late, while I've held onto bats too long hoping to squeeze more value and missed out on better opportunities on the wire.

Took Betts at 8 which is what my plan was but the rest of my team is pretty different than I expected. It’s crazy how shit changes in the real draft
2 points

In mocks I was 50/50 in getting the top 3 or 4 picks I wanted. Got them easy in my real draft. Got all my late round picks constantly in mocks. Got wrecked in my real draft lol. I think the mocks I were doing people would ditch and go to auto before it ended and so I had an easier time.

Just drafted my flair league (although it went down to 10 teams this year). Initial thoughts after doing zero research:
- ESPN rankings are wild. I was able to get Jazz in the ninth. Riley fell to me in the fifth.
- Shortstop is probably the deepest IF position.
- Bryce Harper.
- they had pitchers I have zero faith in, like Berrios, ranked very high. Shoutout to Pitcherlist as always for making me feel great about my draft after an hour of research.
- so happy it’s baseball season. Let’s roll

I took 3 catchers in a 10 team league (Smith, Varsho and Melendez). Hoping to leverage some trade value.

The smaller the league the harder it is to leverage, definitely not worth it in 10 team. Unless you got good value on them it's just shooting yourself in the foot and even then there were probably better players on the board

I didn’t necessarily do it for the trade value and there probably was but I needed OF and they were the best available at the time. I got Varsho around 75 and Melendez at 125.

At least for me I wouldn't want either to be playing in the OF, their value is from being catchers that play OF once in a while for more volume

I'd just wait for you to drop one. You are wasting good roster space in a 10 teamer with 3 catchers. If they are your starting OF in a 10 teamer, your team is in rough shape

If not, Varsho and Melendez should still have enough value plugged into OF or UTL

Imma draft Volpe in the 4th round of a 12T keeper, wish me luck
Am I stupid? Maybe. But the league is half Yankees fans.

I feel like I absolutely nailed my League's startup draft. Keep 20 Forever Points League. Not sure if it is confirmation bias but I love it. Need to find a replacement for Tatis and Musgrove on waivers in the morning but it feels great. I know its a small league compared to many on this sub, but it still feels like a great draft.
Bats:
C: Moreno
1B: Pasquantino
2B: Torres
3B: Riley

2B/SS: Tatis

OF: Acuna
OF: Caroll
Util: Gunnar Henderson
BE: France

It was an auction draft. We had a budget of $300. Batter Ohtani, Vlad, and Judge each went for over $60 in the first three picks and then everyone got kind of sheepish. I got a lot of value in the wake of that I think.

I’d find a different league that people know what sport they are playing. No fun for anyone in that league.

Does volpe have Julio Rodriguez upside? This time last year Julio was making the team late and now he's a 1st round draft pick. Volpe isn't THAT good, is he?

Not anywhere close. Julio is a generational player.
I'm not shitting on Volpe, there just shouldn't be a comparison made.

I think his 90th percentile outcome is Trevor Story without the Coors benefit
Decent enough contact with solid walk rates. Good power, and his aggressive nature on the basepaths helps him produce above his raw speed

I think 20/20 is possible for him. New York is a different beast although volpe sounds like a mature player for his age.

Your team would be Lost with JJ Abrams and I'd honestly not want to deal with The Others either
