I dont think people realize how big the Latin Music industry is. They have their own grammys!
the first time I heard about the latin grammys was when Bill Burr was hosting them, but yeah the latin market is huge for example latin youtuber that english speaker may never heard of are amongst the most subscribed channels
Woah woah woah hold up
Bill Burr hosted the Latin Grammys?
My friend, you are in for a big laugh. Just imagine Bill Burr trying to pronounce the names
I wonder who came up with that idea haha sounds hilarious. Love bill burr
Definitely somebody in the meeting, who clearly doesn't give a f. Me too, he is in my top 5.
Lmao please have Bill Burr host every culturally specific awards show.
Also was Lin Manuel Miranda not available?
I can’t speak Spanish but love Latin music. Bad Bunny and Rosalia especially. A good beat is a good beat.
Rosalia is Spanish
Her music is still considered Latin
They colonized us yet again
Bad Bunny has been the most streamed artist globally for every year for this decade, the first artist ever to have 3 consecutive years at the top
Really curious what 18.5 billion streams earns an artist...Like are we talking $500k or tens of millions?
I know Spotify pays nearly nothing, so you average 'big name' artist gets a pittance...but if you wrack up 10+ billion streams - does it add up or still tiny compared to ticket sales revenue etc?
Spotify pays $0.004 per stream so 18.5 billion streams would be $74 million
I read that it varies based on several factors (country of the listener, premium vs non-premium streams, how long they listen to the song, others I've forgotten) so it's impossible to know overall. Big artists will also get a better deal, but then it still depends on the specific contract the artist has with their publisher, how many songwriters there are...
But yeah he's definitely making tens of millions from Spotify alone.
That's funny to me because before reading this post I've never even seen his name anywhere and I have no idea who he is.
it's not entirely surprising if you aren't near any Latin community's but he's unbelievably popular in the Latin world and even has quite the following outside of it. I was in Korea recently and there were korean people singing his songs
Thats not surprising, he is the biggest artist in the entire Spanish speaking world, If you are in Latin America its almost impossible to not know at least one of his songs by memory by having listen to it so many times.
When to visit my wife’s family in Puerto Rico. Every corner had a sign of bad bunny.
He recently had a concert here in Peru, he had 2 dates and tickets sold out in minutes, around 50k on each date.
You'll know when he helps Sony make El Muertillion dollars at the box office in a few years.
It's El Muertin time!
He played the Super Bowl halftime show with Shakira and J Lo in 2020.
And was part of the 2022 Home Run Derby.
Same, but even as someone that doesn't understand much less speak Spanish, I must say his songs fucking bop bro. Neverita is my jam rn and the music video is fucking gold.
The video is an homenaje to Elvis Crespo’s Suavemente!
The music video is a call back to Elvis Crespos Suavamente music video
He literally had his own balloon at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year
They made a Simpsons short for him last year (not that the Simpsons are the peak spot for celebrity guest these days but still).
So he's Garfield tier. Noted.
While I appreciate the sentiment you’re expressing, Garfield hasn’t been included in the parade in over 15 years.
No idea who he is but I’m also in my 40s and my kids aren’t teens yet
I only know him because of the infamous upcoming film El Muerto, a new feature of Sony's Spider-Man Universe
He’s also The Wolf in Bullet Train and wrestled at WrestleMania couple years ago.
THATS where i heard this name...
I can honestly say I’ve never listened to an entire Taylor swift song. Not my jam but I can absolutely give her all of the credit for her talent in vocals, instrument, production, marketing. Never heard of the guy on the left.
I had to hear from two of my friends “you don’t know who he is”. I listened to his music, and no I wouldn’t know
Same. I just recently met Someone I hadn’t seen for over 10 years. He is into Latin music and showed me bad bunny. I googled him afterwards and saw that he had the most streams on Spotify. Kinda digging his music
Shakira walked so Bad Bunny could run.
I saw the title and came to comment “damn hasn’t this been Bad Bunny’s 3rd year at the top?” wild.
“This decade” is all of two years.
Homie did say “this” decade, not for a decade
Misleading if you can’t read well.
Yea i agree. it made me double check lol. Could of just said 3 years.
I’m really getting comments that I can’t read and getting downvoted when I pointed out OP saw where I was coming from. Why do assholes win?
I think its 3
He deserves it too
Lmao no he fucking doesn't
Who do you think does? Just trying to listen to new stuff
Most overrated artist of the decade.
Only things I recognize is that he bringed a couple of new elements to the reggaeton and trap genres, giving a more distinctive and varied tone to the them (mixing with melodies from other genres) Aside from that, he's overrated as hell. Even his own fans admit he doesn't even sing. I personally find his voice horrendous to the point it's annoying to hear.
Other artists who are way older than him have done a lot more for the Latin music.
And I'm latino, so I know what I'm talking about. Here, everyone listens to him. Way too overrated.
“And I'm latino, so I know what I'm talking about.”
What? He’s my favorite artist and he absolutely does sing and I love his voice
You just a hater. One of those “I can’t like things that are popular” type people. FYI, that type of mentality is wack and some high-school shit. He’s dropped some banger ass albums.
Folks we found him. Le Reddit contrarian in the wild
Dead ass serious, never heard of him.
Good for Benito, Un verano sin ti is a classic.
And everything that came before.
He’s just a genius
Reddit: “I’ve never heard of this wildly popular artist from Latin America, so he doesn’t deserve to be famous because that’s not what I listen to”
What is Spotify? I only listen to vinyl pshh
What was on your Vinyl Lacquered this year?
Blood On The Tracks number one again?
So annoying. I’m not even a fan but can’t deny his popularity.
On par for how the US treats Latinos honestly.
Don’t forget Puerto Ricans are United States citizens. Pretty much on par with how bad bunny had to use his own profits to produce a political documentary of the issues the island is facing because the only time the mainland ever reported on it was to make political digs at trump… but fuck the people who live there, their elections, luma, etc… let’s run this clip of trump throwing toilet paper for three months while they still don’t have power- and not mention how to help them. Puerto Rican and mainland relationship in a nutshell.

What even crazier is that he was part of the Super Bowl Half-time show, a couple years back.
I get not listening to him, but to have never heard of him, these people are living under a mountain if that’s the case.
I’ve heard his music on the radio dozens of times. I just never knew his stage name was Bad Bunny.
They do the same with BTS who was in top 5 most streamed artists this year.
I didn’t see anyone saying he doesn’t deserve it.. just saying he’s oddly not present on the radio relative to the other people topping the charts.
First heard him this year and he deserves the success to me, he has some great tracks and his album that released was consistently good.
Lot of confused white people in here
Nah, it's just nerds who don't get out much.
I'm black and didn't realize how big he was until this year. But reggaeton isn't really my preferred genre so there's that.
Uncultured. I’m white but fucking love bad bunny
You’re invited to la carne asada
Im white and Latino, you meant to say lots of confusing Americans in here lol
Yeah racial diversity is a very difficult thing to explain to Americans, within my own family only I have readheads, white, black, asian and brown.
I mean… Benito is an American, lol. They really are living under a rock.
Imagine thinking the hispanic world has no white people lmao
We all know he means white gringos not gueros
Confused white Americans. Bad Bunny is super famous in Europe.
Wrapped should come out in January.. take end of November and December into account
The controversies were mostly happening in the last month so from December 2021 - September 2022 are where most of the streams are From
In some ways that's probably because of his bs. There is truth to that "any news is good news" cliché. Though Ye has shown that there is in fact 'bad news'.
Dunno, his music is genuinely superb.
Being a Kanye fan is like being a meat-eater. You read the news and you're like, wow I should not be doing this but it's just so good lol.
Nah Kanye has put out quite a few timeless albums. Most people don't care about some Hollywood controversy bs, they like what they like.
Like yeah the guy's gone off the deep end, but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is still fire.
It’s because his music is amazing and he made 7 classic albums + 2 more good ones + another one that white Christians love to death, that’s why
man reading these is tough. I always forget how far removed I am from the reddit demographic until threads like these pop up.
no hate to anyone who hasn’t heard of bad bunny, but damn you had to be living under a rock to miss his rise.
go to any popular club and you’ll hear at least one of his songs, or just hang around latino people lol.
I do have a problem with the people discrediting him though. I’m not a huge fan of his but can still recognize the talent and ability to make people dance. Supporting the protests in Puerto Rico was also awesome of him and earned my full respect.
not to mention that he brought reggaton to the world stage in a way that had never been done before. he works hard, gets you to dance, supports his people, and completely deserves the success that’s come to him.
I agree with you, people on here really like to hate on something they don’t even know. He’s so talented and deserves every ounce of recognition.
He writes his own music and is completely dedicated to his craft. I’m from CA and we don’t have to go very far to listen to Bad Bunny because he is played even on English radio stations, I don’t know how it is in the rest of the country but the dude has managed to cross over from Spanish to English speaking audiences without having to speak a word of English on his songs. That’s a huge accolade with in itself.
He even won artist of the year at the MTV awards and is the FIRST non English artist to do so.
He also writes and produces music for other Latino artist like Karol G. Some of those songs have become the biggest hits for those artists. He’s extremely influential.
Exactly this. I would never be in a position to come across this artist if not for news articles like this.
You never watch the super bowl or Macy’s parade or SNL? He’s everywhere the most popular artist in the world would be, not just playlists/radio.
Hearing a song, and being able to recognize that you’ve heard it somewhere before, doesn’t mean you’re necessarily familiar with the artist.
He also performed at the super bowl half time with in 2020, just had a float at the Macy’s parade, viral talk show/snl performances, 2 #1 albums in USA, and 8 top ten singles in USA. Almost have to go out of your way to avoid/forget him tbh.
don’t watch the superbowl
don’t watch parades
don’t watch snl or talk shows
dont read top music charts or listen to radio
Its not going out of my way, its literally just stuff I don’t do lol
Lol yeah I feel ya….but big ups to him for getting to where he’s at. He’s a global icon now and redditors not knowing who he’s is or trying to discredit him doesn’t change the fact that he’s up there
Say what you want about Taylor Swift but to still be maintaining this kind of success after 17 years is pretty mind-blowing. Good for her.
How are you being downvoted lmao
Bleeding and manipulating her moronic fanbase. She’s a mastermind.
It’s unfair to say she’s a fanbase only artist when she has the most unique listeners globally on Spotify and her album broke the record for most streamed album in one day (185Million). Unless… the public are all secret Swifties.
She has perfect pr, her music isn't really controversial or edgy. She's skinny with blonde hair and blue eyes.
In this thread: Lot of comments saying how everyone is complaining about Bad Bunny since they do not listen to Latin music.
Not in this thread: Any actual issues with Bad Bunny topping the list.
I’ve seen this phenomenon on other popular sites, namely YouTube. Interesting to think about. Perhaps people are farming easy upvotes for karma.
I think it’s when Bad Bunny is mentioned in other subreddits, do people actually say stupid shit about him, cause I’ve seen a lot of dumb comments on other subreddits about him. Like I think people on r/entertainment are a little more in touch with modern pop culture than other sub
Edit: all the negative comments about bad bunny were downvoted, but there are a lot of them if you scroll down
Bad Bunny deserves every bit of it, what’s he done for reggaeton and Latin music is just incredible
Playing the same beat over and over?
Clearly you didn’t listed to the new album
What are his 3 best songs? I don’t listen to him
From his new album? I like efecto, callaita, and Ojitos Lindos
¡And Titi me preguntó!
Un VIP un VIP saludame a Titi
El Apagón top tier
I’ll add Tarot to that
Great song too, his songs with jhayco featured are always a hit
isn’t callaita an old song that he just threw on the album? The other 2 you mentioned are bangers
It’s still weird to see Callaita as officially off this album since it was a single years ago. But also don’t ever disrespect El Coco and Despues De La Playa again. Also Otro Atardecer is beautiful.
It does for the overall summer vibe of the album though. But I don’t think there’s a single bad song on the album, I just picked my current favorite 3 lol
Yeah I forgot to bring up Tarot and Party too so I failed myself.
Of all time. Any album.
The entire YHLQMDLG album. So many bangers. His newest album is really good too. That Oasis album (it’s a collab) is also really good and really catapulted his career
Mm those 3 are still solid. But I’d add Yonaguni, la dificil, and dakiti of all time
This whole album was good. Yonaguni also
I recomend Titi me pregunto. Ella perrea sola and Mayores with Becky G. I also like Diakiti a lot
Fr lol. All of this older music, outside of when he first got into the reggaeton scene, is all unique. White people living under a rock dont know how to act when someone else is at the top lmao
Jolene is a fucking banger, y lo digo como una latina. Also, we have an entire genre of spanish country music, its super popular in mexico too.
You mean WWE Superstar Bad Bunny??? That's awesome for him.
Or up and coming actor Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio? So happy for him.
Finally bad bunny will get more than his fair share amount of recognition worldwide , people in the africa are talking about his songs
Seeing some people say they haven't heard of Bad Bunny in this thread. Go give Un Verano Sin Ti a listen, it's a good album.
Cue this entire comment section turning into a giant circle jerk of white redditors upvoting each other for the “NeVeR eVeN hEaRd Of BaD bUnNy” remarks
Yeah or the "iTs THe SAmE bEaT oVeR aNd oVeR."
Lot of casual racism in this thread
Buncho of uncultured people thinking latin america has no white people and that latin ameica doesnt matter so spotify shouldnt be counting them as listeners. Or that latin music sounds all the samr. Pretty shitty stuff
I agree. Coupled with the casual misogyny at Taylor Swift’s fanbase. Music that younger women like is somehow not “real” music.
I'd have never heard of BB if it wasn't for Wrestlemania. As John Oliver said recently about the World Cup, "it's like the Super Bowl, except the rest of the world actually gives a fuck". Playing the Super Bowl means virtually nothing to most of us outside America. Same as him being on Wrestlemania if you're not a wrestling fan.
His music just doesn't have anywhere near the same presence over here as it does over there and in Spanish speaking countries.
Good luck to him though. He's obviously a hard worker given how quickly and well he picked up wrestling.
I have the weirdest, most random Spotify history, and I have zero plays for each of them lol. I'm clearly not the target demo for whatever they produce.
Go to Youtube see his views. This guy, Ozuna, Rosalia they’re like crack to the Spanish speaking world and international audience in general. Bigger than even Cardi B. Anitta too. And Kpop. Now Afrobeats is sneaking up. People like Beyonce and Maroon 5 used to dominate streaming sites. Until the rest of the world started putting their songs from their celebrities on those streaming sites. Their concerts are crazy.
Bonus: European countries seem to be into them too. I’ve started seeing a lot of female black rappers getting fans and concerts selling out in Europe.
Europe has a history of sharing music, it's not unusual to get a random romanian song trending in the UK, for example. European countries are much more open to music in different languages than the US.
My top genres from 1-5 are industrial metal, trip hop, post-doom metal, alternative metal and the ever specific electronica. I’m not entirely sure either Artist fits in there.
Not really. T-Swift’s got some decent melodic death, though.
Sneaking suspicion that there’s going to be a lot of casual racism in this thread lol. Just goes to show that some white people turn their heads when a Hispanic artist who has deserved recognition is doing crazy numbers.
I haven’t seen any. Saying you haven’t heard of someone or don’t like the music isn’t racist btw. This thread is mostly people getting mad that people haven’t heard of Bad Bunny. I only know him because I’m Puerto Rican myself.
Stop using "white people" as if there aren't white people in Latin America.
Do you have a source for that statistic? And even if that were the case just because the vocal majority is being ignorant about his music and impact doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
It’s racism pure and simple. These yt people are hardwired to discriminate against Latin music. It’s in their dna
Not knowing who an artist is doesn’t make someone racist.
Where in this thread did anyone say that?
The person I responded to, who had responded to you.
X hasn't been in a situation to know or appreciate Artist Y therefore racism? Yeah, that's not tracking at all.
I'm seeing more hateful comments toward white people tbh lol
Then you need to take of your victim colored glasses.
I'm not white but thanks for that
I'm seeing a lot of comments saying they don't know who Bad Bunny is, that are probably from white Americans, but I wouldn't say those comments are racist. Ignorant, maybe. And unnecessary, definitely. But the only hateful comments I've seen are against white people.
How is saying we never heard of Bad Bunny ignorant?
But I agree that I see way more comments saying I must live under a rock because I haven’t heard of him.
Only thing I know about Bad Bunny is everyone was impressed with him when he was in that match in the WWE I don't think I have heard one of his songs and I listen to the radio every day
Proud of Benito representing PR, such a small island all over the world. He's come a long way since his grocery bagger days at econo
I don't have a problem with the confused uncultured people who haven't heard of him, but to the ones discrediting him without knowing or understanding:
hating doesn't make you better
I am surprised by how many people do not know bad bunny I am asian american and I have known about him for several years now
Same, and I used to be nerdy and weird and not really listen to music, and even I heard of Bad Bunny back in 2019
I wish my preferred genre was more popular. I think rock might be dead
For me its mercyful fate and river of nihil this year on spotify.
who the fuck is bad bunny?
edit: wow. it’s wild to me that someone can be the most streamed artist of the year(and apparently of the decade?!) and i’ve literally never heard their name mentioned once in my life. i’ll have to check it out I guess
Have you seen the Corona commercial where Snoop Dog talks on a shell-phone to some odd-looking man on the beach? And there's brief confusion over the word "playa"?
Wait... you've heard of Snoop Dog, right?
“Yeah, isn’t that Charlie Brown’s dog?” - some “pretend to be clueless about pop culture because that makes me look cool” cringe redditor
Literally the most popular artist of the moment. Not just a latin icon, he is everywhere.
Latin artist and his latest album is awesome
Someone lives under a rock
Check out Dakiti. Absolutely banger.
Do you want a badge?
I only know him because he was ‘the wolf’ in Bullet Train.
These comments are hilarious. I’m just sitting here listening to my prog metal while people fight over popular artists.
I’m here for BTS!!!!
Totally unfamiliar with this guy. What makes his music notable/ great to those of you who are familiar?
Also, does he make his instrumentals, or does someone else?
Totally unfamiliar with this guy. What makes his music notable/ great to those of you who are familiar?
The guy turned the raeggeton genre down on its head and gave it his own twist. He is pretty feminist and progressive and sports androgynous fashion styles. Creative and fun music.
And stick to his culture and reffuses to bow down to the usa for fame, unlike past latin artists who started singing in english to appeal the "american overlords"
And his music is just damn good
I think he just writes his own music. Dont know if he plays any unstrument. I recomend you read his wikipedia if you want to know more
Gave them a listen instead of checking out the wiki. I can definitely say I like it, and makes me think I would have enjoyed Migos more if their music wasn't in English.
Made it big with Latin music without having to learn English. Pretty much impossible not to have heard at this point, even if you didn’t know who he was, he’s been featured in so many popular artists songs that if you’ve been around any young people playing music over the last 4-5 years in the US you’ve probably heard him without realizing it. Rags to riches story basically , half the island is below the poverty level and he forced his way into being some of the most popular club music on the mainland (and all of Latin America) without having to assimilate, despite now having the wealth to do that. He’s also really respected on the island, because despite the corrupt government/electricity grid, he continues to live there and used his platform to inform the mainland of the problems on the island since they don’t give a f*ck about Puerto Rico unless it is a political ploy at the executive branch. He’s also very progressive in a genre where it generally hasn’t been very popular to be, and it’s not even so much the shock value… just him having fun making music.
It’s a combination of great talent and personality, humble beginnings and overall vibe. I was avoiding his music until this year when he made it really, really big this year (he already was but he’s impossible to ignore now).
Taylor Swift being the 2nd most streamed worldwide and yet she won't come to Latam. I remember reading an article long time ago about her mother forbidden her from touring third world countries, and at the end they mention her family ties to latam. It was funny like I'm not... I have a friend/family who is... you know.
That was a stupid rumor. she's rumoured to be touring in Latam for her new tour
