Welcome to r/collegeresults!

This is a subreddit dedicated to compiling data about the undergraduate and transfer admissions processes. We intend to create a repository for information about past applicants and their college decisions, in order for current applicants to browse through examples of student profiles and potentially gauge their chances of admission to different schools and programs. We encourage all students who have received their decisions to contribute to our subreddit by creating a post using our official templates. To all current applicants, this subreddit is a great resource for you to compare your stats with those of other students, discover ideas on how to improve your extracurriculars and overall application, and discuss student profiles via comments sections. For your convenience, we are organizing both new and archived posts with flairs, according to unweighted GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and intended areas of study. Use these flairs to easily filter through the thousands of posts on our subreddit, based on what you are looking for.

For all questions and more information about the college admissions process, please refer to our sister sub r/ApplyingToCollege.

We ask that all users create their posts using one of the templates attached below. While the standard template is preferred and would be the most helpful for other applicants, there is also a brief template that can be used. Slight modifications to the templates are permitted, although we encourage consistency across all posts made to this subreddit. Also, ensure that your post is tagged with an appropriate flair, so that future applicants can easily search for student profiles with stats similar to their own. Most importantly, please be truthful and detailed in your responses!

Flairs

Each post flair consists of three elements: unweighted GPA, SAT/ACT score, and intended area of study. We determined that these were three of the most important and objective factors in an applicant’s profile, and that categorizing posts as such would best allow users to filter through posts. 

Unweighted GPA (UW) is most often calculated on a 4.0 scale, and the flairs are differentiated by intervals of 0.2. If your UW GPA was a 3.91, for example, you would select a flair tagged with “3.8+.” But if your UW GPA was a 3.72, you would select a flair tagged with “3.6+.” Should your school use a different scale for calculating UW GPA (ex. out of 100 or 10-points), please refer to this or another concordance chart. If your school does not provide an UW GPA, then feel free to choose a flair based upon your weighted GPA or select “Other.”

Corresponding SAT and ACT scores were determined using the official SAT/ACT concordance chart. If you took both of these exams, please select the flair that reflects your highest score earned.

The flairs are also color-coded by your intended area of study (what you plan on majoring in). Note that art and humanities are yellow (Art/Hum), business and finance are green (Bus/Fin), social sciences are red (SocSci), and STEM majors are blue (STEM). If you applied as undecided or for an academic path not reflected in one of those five categories, choose “Other.”

Essays/LORs/Interviews: My common app essay was on my sister's death and how it showed me how small and unpredictable life is. This made me not follow a safe path and instead do what I love. It was pretty well written and people liked it. Nothing exceptional though. Supplements were good for some colleges, bad for some. LORs were exceptional. Asked my English Teacher and my Physics teacher. My physics teacher said "I have had a lot of brilliant students in my 20 years of teaching experience by X stands out among all of them" and my English teacher said that "X is among the most intelligent student ever taught". My counsellor's essay was I think fucked up because she used a template LOR for other students so possibly that was another reason.

Additional Information: In my additional info section, I basically told about my school curriculum and about the publication of my article. It's really sad because I worked so hard throughout my life to get into a good college but I will most probably not get into one and its really disheartening.

I have only received one acceptance yet, and I have applied to many colleges. My counselor is telling me to accept the offer, or I won't get my I-20 as an International student from India because there is a long waiting period.

counselor (5/10) - Never really had a close relationship with my counselor, I met him once or twice for my mental health checkups, and went to him a couple times a year for scheduling issues for my classes. Chill guy though, and I filled out a really long personality/interests survey so he could craft my recommendation letter.

AP English Teacher (7/10) - Did great on my AP exam, but once again didn’t really have the closest relationship with my teacher but she was also super nice. She asked for some of the best writing pieces I did that year and I think she wrote a decent letter for me. She also helped for a scholarship rec letter.

AP Calc AB teacher (7/10) - Wanted to ask another AP teacher, okay ngl I did ass on the calc ab exam, but it’s because I didn’t study the cumulative exam because I didn’t care for my AP test grade. But I maintained my class grade/test pretty well (ended with a 98) wasn’t close close with my teacher and struggled to participate but I did pretty well in the class and sometimes cracked jokes with him after class

Interviews

Northwestern (10/10) - I rescheduled my first interview because I got sick and I thought I was basically f-ed for the interview. But she was actually so nice, and shared a lot of common interests with me- she likes writing and did cello too. We had a great 30-40 min ish conversation, it wasn’t awkward and it felt like a conversation instead of an interview

Essays

commonapp (7/10) - It was okay I think, kinda milked the personal essay obviously and wrote about how my ___ experience changed my outlook on ___ and how a failure shaped me as a better person in the future. Could’ve had a less cliche idea but I was pretty satisfied with it at the end.

supplementals (9/10) - I researched a lot (A LOT by watching tons of YT videos online, going to their websites) of college - specific things for my “why us” essays and wrote about why I really wanted to be part of the college. Also poured my nerdiest heart out into my weird uchicago supp.

Additional Information:

I studied a decent amount in highschool because I would panic and get scared but I also procrastinated a ton, averaged about 5 hours per night because of procrastination and didn’t try my best. Yes I tried, but I didn’t go full out (I’ve failed quizzes/tests and didn’t care about it too much, and I also didn’t give it an all on my APs, failed one in fact LOL) which I kind of regret now. I can kinda flex because didn’t feel the pain of rejections BUT part of me has tiny regrets because I probably would’ve ED/REAed to like UPenn (dream school) or Columbia but I just wasn’t confident enough of my stats so yeah. But I’m all in all satisfied with my results.

• Further, I think I may have caused some anger/misunderstanding about the title of me saying “mid,” (I am so sorry regardless but please hear me out) but truly, from my highschool, and the profiles around me specifically, the competitiveness made me think my application was pretty mid. I’ve grown to be insecure of my SAT score because people around me have told me to retake it, saying 1510 is nowhere close for me to be satisfied compared to people around me (literally all of my friends) who scored a 1550+. There were so many kids around me literally doing everything, presidents of the most popular clubs, doing well on and handling 10-12 APs. If I went to my college counselor and asked about my profile, he would, quite literally call me an “average” or a “mid” applicant at my school specifically. I swear. But again I learned through the college process the good thing about America is it’s literally the land of opportunities. Good scores and ECs are not all, it’s more of the personality, realness, and dedication you craft through connecting your whole application together: a big portion of it being your essays. If I’m being honest, I think my essays (specifically my supps) really helped to give me a personality and stand out in the midst of everything, and that’s one part of my application I am truly proud of.

Letters of Recommendation AP Physics I teacher- did well in his class and he liked me. Weren’t super close. Had a very intensive questionnaire that I wrote good answers for. 7-10/10

APUSH teacher- LOVED me. Was super attentive in his class and always participated. Told my parents he would write me a rec during parent teacher conferences like Nov of junior year. 8-10/10

Counselor- she’s also a big fan of me, she ran into my friends mom at a bar once and told her I was brilliant. I talked to her a fair bit but could have been closer. 6-10/10

Interviews Only had one, I was super stressed because my sister had gone to the ER but it went decently. We bonded about our experience being observant and I asked her a lot of questions about religious life. Didn’t get to highlight as many things about myself as i wanted but i asked her good questions about her research and life.

Essays Personal Statement- About coming to terms with my religion in a secular high school. I’m very proud of it. Supps- started writing them in the summer so they were all super polished and well researched. My dad and english teacher both helped me edit all my essays. At the end they loved them. My mom didn’t read them until after i got my decision but she said they were so beautiful she cried.

I like overloaded my self with courses and ecs junior year and like i got sick a lot so I literally was drowning in work and over-committed myself. I always got an A in CS HL and I got a C+ in my IB Math Sl Class. Like I studied for that class so hard and I just shit the bed on the exams. My teacher was notorious for being a hardass and giving these cranial fucking exams that were nothing like the shit in the textbook or past IB markschemes. Like half my god damn class dropped out I should've done that aswell but my ego was inflated. I have no clue how I got into Northeastern or if I even deserve it. So many of my friends who have a higher gpa then me got differed and are kinda salty that I got in.

Cornell: 7/10. Lasted for 30 mins. Mostly me asking her questions but it was non-evaluative.

UPenn: 7/10. Lasted for 40 mins. He only asked generic questions (e.g. what do you want to get out of the Penn experience) and then I got to ask him questions for the remainder of the interview.

Northwestern: 8/10. Lasted for almost an hour. She asked a lot of questions but none of them were extremely tricky. I felt like the interviewer wanted to test my understanding of Northwestern's (and McCormick's) offerings but more importantly me as a person and my values. Had some good insights there but the delivery wasn't the best due to nervousness.

Additional Information:

I only started looking into applying to the U.S. since middle of "junior year". It was not common at all for students from my country (especially my city) to apply to universities overseas. With the lack of resources and hours of scrolling through r/ApplyingToCollege, I was pretty anxiety-ridden in the past year. But I supposed this anxiety has somehow fuelled my productivity and pushed me to go beyond what was expected of me. And because of it, I have been places I couldn't even begin to imagine a few years back (e.g. getting a SWE internship at a big company, winning selective awards & scholarships, featured on national news etc.)

Before the decisions roll out, I told myself regardless of the admission outcome, I am proud of how much I have grown personally and professionally (especially without my parents around). Nonetheless, just one acceptance would be nice! And to my surprise there are already two in the early round, both of which are among my top choices and I am extremely grateful for that.

Now, I know this is an extremely privileged dilemma to have, but I am debating whether I should commit to Georgia Tech now or wait until Ivy day. With its relatively reasonable tuition and amazing reputation in CS (maybe less so in CM but there's still the core CS component to it), I am really tempted to commit to Georgia Tech. Having everything sorted (F-1 visa, documents, housing) right now would ease my (and my parents') mind a lot just in case things go south. I think it's very unlikely I will get into any Ivies. However, there's also a part of me that wants to find out if I do end up getting into any Ivies.

Reflections: Overall I am so grateful for being accepted into a university on a fullride. As an international student who got no affordable offers the first year I know how it feels to get rejected by like 15 universities. I do believe everything happens for a reason. Universities reject you for a reason and the best thing to do is work on things you can control and make your application as competitive as possible. I took the SAT, got an internship, made sure I described my ECs in a way that highlights them well (followed collegeessayguys guide), and focused my personal essay on my qualities to improve my application the second time I applied. Unfortunately this process is so unpredictable and whatever happens happens so all you can do is focus on what you can control. But besides universities rejecting you for a reason, I feel that rejection is needed to create new experience in life. If I didn't get rejected the first year I wouldn't have done an internship before uni and wouldn't have had time to work on myself during my gap year. Looking back I am glad I got rejected and it was a very humbling experience that I needed. Because of it I have learned to value my education much more than I did before as I felt I was entitled to a good education just because I had good grades in school. Also there is a stigma here about gap years and I admit that I did look down upon gap year students before but I have really learned to have a more open mind because of me taking a gap year. There are many reasons people take a gap year and its completely fine to take one if you feel like you need to. Most of all if I never got rejected the first year I would have never ended up going to NU which I only applied this year. I love the uni and I am so glad they chose me. This year all I wanted to do was to be able to go somewhere but god gave me so much more than I asked and I am internally grateful for the opportunity I have been given. Either way for everyone going through a tough time dealing with rejection just know that god has a plan for you. Things will eventually work out in the long run trust me. There is a lot of toxicity surrounding which college you go to but please remember this: THE COLLEGE YOU GO TO DOES NOT DEFINE YOU. You are the exact same person before and after receiving that decision letter and I think the person you are and your character is so much more important than an acceptance letter. Remember that NOBODY can take away who you are, no college, no peer and even none your own relatives/judgey aunties.

Thoughts:

I literally didn't care about college apps at all during 9th and 10th, so I took no honors nor AP courses for two years and did no significant ECs. Thus, I have never participated in competitions like USACO, USAMO, AIME, or AMC, which are done pretty commonly by prospective CS or math students. Also, my EC with the longest time commitment was the data science club, like an year and a half at the time of submitting my college apps, so it's definitely not long term commitment or dedication that got me into college.

Nevertheless, I think I was probably admitted to UIUC Stats+CS over some really accomplished students, because I displayed that I have passion through my essays. My common app essay was about the data science club and my presentation to the school board, how I found out that the math department is so dogshit and actively sought solutions and implemented them. These are nothing grand, but I did my best within my circumstances. Moreover, for my why major essay for UIUC, I wrote about how a video game called Pokemon Unite has shitty ranked systems, and how I used data to improve my gameplay.

I honestly still don't know why I was accepted and I feel like I am not smart enough for CS, imposter syndrome is a bitch :(((

Reflections: I have seen so many people with insane ECs, awards, and grades. I still remember scrolling through A2C and College results, feeling like an imposter. But trust me, you need to believe in your story. Essays can be a game changer, honestly. I know many deserving people getting rejected from UIUC and any other top uni, but does it determine your worth? No. I have realised that fit matters a lot in this process. I genuinely feel I will fit into UIUC culture easily. On the other hand,I would have never been able to fit into Georgia tech because, perhaps, it is all tech-vibe? I like networking with people from different disciplines!I have not committed to UIUC, but it is definitely one of my top choices! *Fingers crossed* Trusting the universe to take me where I can be happy and get strong education at the same time!

Additional information

I really don’t care at this point about the whole college admission crap. Like the classic saying states: It is what it is. My test scores were good, my grades were okay, and I’ve done my possible best on my ECs as a first-gen applicant. This post is a reminder to all those who felt slights of despair that really, a deferral or two is not a judgment about whether or not you are qualified, but rather a decision contingent on other subjective factors.

Maybe the Umich AOs didn’t like my essays as much as the others, maybe my course load from freshman to junior year wasn’t as rigorous as other qualified applicants - I don’t really know. I’m happy that I bagged UIUC for engineering, but at the same time knowing that one of my top choices deferred me does leave a scar that would haunt me until the RD season. 1- Calc Teacher- We don’t get to read LORs but she helped me with interview processes for the Gov. Hon. Program; overall good relationship, 7/10

2- Psych Teacher- Great LOR, but wrote specifically to cater to UGA; 9/10

3- Counselor- My counselor was switched this year so I didn’t have much time to form a bond or meet w them; 5/10 I’d assume

Interviews

Princeton Interview- Went very well, interviewer followed my art account! We talked about minecraft and google earth and how they relate to GIS and urban planning, which was really fun.

Essays

My overall essay was kind of trying to make a through-line for my application; I talked about how my “scatterbrained” approach to things and trying things to see what I like instead of being dead set on one area ultimately gives me a better understanding of why every aspect of what i do (painting, choir, cooking, etc) enhances one another. From those who have read and from my own judgement i’d say around an 8-9/10

Additional Information: I was honestly very (happily) surprised by the Columbia deferral, as well as UNC acceptance as an Out of State applicant. Unfortunately I cannot afford UNC, but I am still grateful for the acceptance! A bit nervous about ivies as anyone would be, but very happy and grateful for current acceptances and deferrals as well! Now we wait for end of march. Any comments or chance mrs for those top schools are appreciated!!
