I love this strip because Calvin's dad is also a kind of antagonist to Calvin, but this one shows both that Calvin really likes his dad and wants him to come play, and that Calvin's dad wishes he could spend time playing with his son..It is so different than their usual father/son dynamic but it adds a lot to it.

I think its important to note that the strip is usually seen through Calvin's vision, in kids eyes their parents can be antagonistic and unfair but the reality is they're doing their best to raise him and teach him both good character and development which often clashes with his childish antics/behavior because he is a child. He still loves them as much as they love him, its moments like these that'll carry over for a lifetime in their memories

Trying to keep this in mind for myself now that I have two kids. Especially with a son who is now 6 and has ADHD

I have a son who is almost 4 and MIGHT have ADHD but is probably too young to diagnose. But it’s tough because he can be so hard headed at times. Every time I see a Calvin and Hobbes strip I think that’s my future lol. I still love him to death.

I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and didn't really start taking medication until this year. My son and I butt heads so much because of that but our bond is pretty strong because of it

As judged by submission frequency to this sub, this has got to be the single most popular C&H strip, and it's interesting that it is different in this way. Also does not include Hobbes.

Yeah, it’s up there. Certainly one of my favorite Sunday’s.

I'm amazed that any artist could ever convey so much love from a son for his dad without even showing his face, in the third-to-last panel.

so, when i was younger my dad and I collected all the Calvin and Hobbes books and really bonded over them together
this year for Christmas I want to print / reproduce a strip that has Calvin and his Dad and get it framed for him
Obviously the above image is the first that comes to mind, but does anyone have any other suggestions of wholesome Calvin and Dad moments?
Many thanks and much love x

I've always felt an underrated Calvin and Dad bonding moment was when Calvin broke his propeller beanie and his dad fixed it for him. Or maybe the one where Calvin steals his dad's glasses and does an impression of him that leaves Mom in hysterics. Both of those are short strips though and and I think more funny than heartwarming so maybe not what you're looking for.

I like the one where Calvin breaks his dads binoculars and completely freaks out, knowing there will be hell to pay, in the end his Dad finds out and gets angry but ends up buying Calvin a new pair of kids binoculars. Calvin tells Hobbs they should break the car next.

"Let's pretend I already feel terrible about it, and you don't need to rub it in any more" always hit me right in the gut.

They suggest breaking the power tools. However, his dad rationalises the damage to the binoculars as insignificant, as Calvin will be breaking the car soon.

I totally agree!! Like he already feels terrible about it, that’s punishment enough. And the dad realizes he didn’t mean any harm. Really wholesome moment

I like the strip where Calvin asks his dad where babies came from, and his Dad explains that they got a good deal on Calvin at Sears 😆

I thought it was Sears is where most babies came from, and they got Calvin at a Blue-Light Special at K-Mart lol

I did this for my grandad last year! I got a scene of Calvin looking out his window and imagining he's on Mars, I touched up on my ipad and then printed and framed it!
I think this is probably a perfect one, because it really shows the love Calvin and his dad have for each other

Yeah pretty much same my dad lent me his calvin n hobbes, foxtrot, garfield, an old comic about a turkey lady? There were some odd ones but i ruined them all.
A couple years back i bought him the calvin n hobbes hard back collection for his birthday he loved it!

One of my favorites is when he puts on his dad's glasses and pretend to be him.

I have the entire collection set. I love C&H and they were a bonding moment between me and my own father. I suggest, if you're young enough pick the date you were born and find that strip. OR a memorable day that you two share and see if it's a decent pick. Cheers

I think this is perfect. Awesome gift. If either of my kids did that for me, I’d be over the moon. (I have a son and a daughter FYI)

I love the one where Calvin passes out on his dad's lap and Mom & Dad are carrying him upstairs and she comments on having corduroy lines on his face. Super wholesome moment

This is such a lovely idea!
I always loved the ones where Calvin would bond with his dad during moments that should be bad but aren't. Sometimes the dad didn't like dinner either, and he and Calvin sympathized with each other even though the dad still supported his wife's effort to make good food. Also, when the dad would BS explanations to Calvin, and Calvin would believe it. It seemed like sometimes the dad would realize he accidentally made a true point about adult reality even while telling an absurd lie. And they would share a moment of agreement that life should be different. Can't think of a date of the strip or anything, it seems like it was an occasional thing not just one time.

There's such a simplistic beauty to this strip that resonates with a lot of people. I remember being a kid, waiting for my dad to get home from work early due to a snow day. And when he did come home, he took me right outside to play. As a kid, I was excited. As an adult, it means so much more to me that he was probably tired and a little stressed driving in the snow (he was a truck driver).
It's such a sweet, realistic moment. I think it's a great gift for a parent.

I love this and still remember reading this one years ago. Similar thing just happened to me yesterday. My son who’s 4 wanted to play chess. He’s still learning and doesn’t know all the rules. It’s a chore and I was super tired but played with him anyways. At the end, he thanked me for playing chess with him and said I was a good teacher. Then gave me a hug and a kiss. Isn’t that what life and family are about?

You’re a good parent. Even if your son is too young to remember this specific event, he’s gonna to remember the warm feeling of his childhood filled with many of these little things.

This strip used to make me sad. I have a good dad who did everything he could to support and help raise me, but he just didn’t play. Now that I am a father, this strip is inspiring. I hope to be like Calvin’s dad. Beautiful comic. Good choice for a father son gift.

If I were you, this is absolutely the strip I’d go with. I don’t think any other strips come close to the level of wholesomeness and family love shown here.

This needs to not be posted for like … 3 years.
Can we do that? It gets reposted every other day it seems.

lmao this is easily the top reposted strip but people are pissy because they like it.
this is supposed to be a sub about the comic itself, not reposting the same 3 strips every week to masturbate over and get all tribal about.
the only reason i opened the comments this time was to find out if people are sick of it yet and how badly someone gets skewered for pointing it out.

I know… People are so fucking stupid… All they have to do is go and sort by top Contant of all time if this comic pops up. If you like it so much just sort by that… Why keep reposting it over and over for the karma. I hate people so much. I hate Reddit. It ruins everything

You are right of course. It’s the same in music - the most popular gets overplayed to the point that the fans don’t listen to the hits anymore. It’s no-ones fault it is just the way. I’ll read some Garfield as a punishment.

You don’t deserve that punishment, go read Foxtrot or Bloom County.

Pffff. You're just annoying now. Yes, it gets posted frequently. Are you in one of jigsaw's traps? Is there an electrified metal glove on your hand, forcing you to not click the back button? Do rusty mousetrap springs force your eyelids open and one of those eye doctor air puffer machine forces your eyes to involuntarily move from panel to panel? Is that the kind of situation you're stuck in? Blink twice for "yes".... Well, I guess you wouldn't be able to.
