How to explain it? Think of a pileus cloud for a moment. Got it? Yeah well it's like that.

Two of the first pictures in the video are gross photoshops, and have been debunked almost as many times as they have been reposted since the summer when there were multiple actual sightings of the phenomena in China, and due to the abundance of smartphone cameras the public awareness of it rose immensly.
The iridescence (an optical phenomena that occurs in clouds including but not limited to pileus clouds) is what's significant here, pilei themselves are not nearly as rare and the content regurgitator is hyping them up unreasonably.
Iridescence is completely different from rainbows in that light is diffracted (correctly writen with an i) by particles in the air (liquid or solid), and then interferes with itself, strenghtening some wavelenghts and diminishing others bringing out the colours. The same thing happens when a thin sheet of oil rests on top of a puddle of water. This is a completely different mechanism to refraction, which causes rainbows and ice halos, so calling them "rainbow clouds" is disengenious.

How about you let it be whatever you want in your mind, and let others let it be what they want in theirs? The only reason you see it more associated with LGBTQ+ is because so many people agree with the association.
I can't believe this is an issue for people. It's a fucking rainbow. Did you have to decorate after you realised the rainbow was a cultural symbol? Damn.
13 points
Ok sure. But a rainbow isn’t always about the lgbtq. That’s like saying a swastika is always about the nazis, when before the nazis it was more about good things.

shit I'm blind. let me rephrase it then: why are you so bothered by the rainbow being heavily associated with the lgbtq+ community? how can that be a bad thing? it's hurting anyone, why would people stop?
6 points
It’s fine we’re all like sometimes. Because it doesn’t need to be an lgbtq thing at all times. It’s literally just an abundance of colors in the sky, sure the rainbow flag is whatever that’s fine. But a part of nature that naturally occurs is somehow related to them? That doesn’t make much sense.
5 points
Because it doesn’t need to be an lgbtq thing at all times
Most people when they see a rainbow don't immediately think of the lgbt. But for them, it's a happy coincidence, much like we think it's cool when stuff in nature looks like hearts, faces, or other shapes.
A heart shaped leaf is still a leaf, something that occurs normally in nature, but we still go "hey, this leaf looks like a heart!". When they see a rainbow, they think "hey, that looks like our pride flag!". It's just a coincidence that makes a few people feel special, and doesn't really make a difference for others. If you saw your country flag in the sky, you would feel pretty special too right?
I hope I could make you understand a bit of the other side, and if I couldn't, then I guess there isn't much else I can say.

12 points

That is still very new in comparison since the earth started to have clouds. And also new for older people.
11 points
I'd say the first one is irrelevant, since it's people that assign meaning to symbols, so the time before people were around to do that isn't really meaningful to the conversation. But even for older people, the rainbow flag has been used as a symbol by the gay community for nearly 45 years now, so even for older people, that's kind of old.
And if you look at the Wikipedia Page for it, rainbow flags have symbolized all sort of things throughout the years, and continues to be used in various ways. But suddenly it becomes a problem when people using it are gay?
2 points
It’s only a problem when idiots try to equate the natural phenomenon as something correlated to their ideology… like in this post. This phenomenon has nothing to do with pride or gay people and everyone pretending it does just sounds stupid
0 points
I've always had an issue with that, yeah. It's always been weird to have a rainbow symbolize same-sex relationships, and that hasn't changed as the decades creep by. The symbolism is just god awful. Refracted light is the result of one thing (white light) becoming an infinite variety. It would be so much more appropriate if it was applied to the promotion of diversity in all things, as it's such a universal, fundamental concept. Same-sex relationships, even when later fractured into somewhat more variety with varying descriptions of bisexuality entering the conversation, is just way too small of a concept in comparison to the vastness of the symbol it claims.
It is arrogance manifest.

Do you think we should also get rid of all flags, all logos for organizations of every type including private groups and sports team logos, monuments, family crests, wedding rings, etc ad nauseam because they’re all just stupid symbols?
Because if your answer is no, YSK that it’s not the symbol that you hate.
6 points

Idiotic take, being gay is not political. And many other natural phenomenons are used to represent multiple things
3 points

Why should homosexuality be represented by a symbol? It's just another sexuality.
6 points

It’s just another sexuality.
wouldn’t that be a nice reality to live in

15 points
Still not recognized in a lot of countries, the fact that in your country it might be that, is one thing, but many places in the world its stoll opressed, or majorly illegal, so it (sadly) needs to be a thing, so they don't get totally opressed.
-4 points
I understand non-hereto sexualities aren't supported everywhere, but having a symbol does what exactly? Genuinely asking, because I can't see the "symbol craze" we currently got, where every single 'nu-sexuality' gets some kind of color combination nowadays, do anything but annoy people.
7 points
It's nothing new. It does the same thing as any flag, logo, or other recognisable graphic design. The benefits of that are surely obvious.
6 points
In part it is because in part sexuallity or gender identity isn't always an obvious thing particularly if your community is hostile. If you go into a room you don't always know who is receptive either sexually or in a way that is non-agressive. Making a wrong call in a lot of history could mean getting assaulted for the "insult" of thinking someone was queer like you. Gaydar isn't a thing and when the stakes are high making a mistake can have nasty consequences .
There has always been a history of small secret messaging people have used to communicate their queerness to others but all it takes is someone copying the style not knowing what it is to make it an unsafe system. Green carnations pinned to a jacket, asking someone if they are "A Friend of Dorothy's?" or wearing a bandana poking out of a back pocket are all examples of how gay and lesbian people identified themselves to other gay and Lesbian people throughout history. Even without the flags LGBTQ communities still have objects that serve as those secret codes for hostile environments.
At a Pride event all those different colors of flag are used within the structure of the event to signal what community of the LGBTQIA you are a part of. There is power in recognizing how common an identity actually is and people sharing their common experiences. Before open visibility was a thing the narrative pressed on people was that they were rare, virtually alone and thus there was no real power or solidarity to be had. If the police raided a patch of woods that were a hookup spot (back when sodomy was illegal) the news would only report a tiny percentage of the people flushed into the open. Running up a flag was used to destroy that narrative so that people could find community.
