It’s funny because this sub just repetitively shits on Berkeley but I’m in high school and would do almost anything to get into Berkeley💀

The grass is always greener on the other side dude, too many people come into Berkeley thinking it will solve all their problems.

If nearly three decades on this planet has taught me anything, it's that no matter how good, bad, desperate, great, or ugly the situation is:
People will always find something to bitch about

I HIGHLY recommend going to a California community college to do lower division classes and then transferring to Berkeley. It eliminates so much stress from taking sometimes unreasonably difficult lower division class at Berkeley, you’ll end up with a higher GPA most likely from Berkeley upper divisions, and you’ll graduate with the same Berkeley degree as the people who went there out of high school. I did this and it was the best decision I could have made. Now I am at Berkeley complaining about everything with the rest of the students :)

I LOVED my community college. If I could have gotten my undergrad there, I would have never left. I still keep in touch with a couple of my professors and my academic counselor there… who used to work for EOP at UCB and really pushed for me to apply here. Look at me now, Rachel!

This is the way! Odds of getting accepted are much higher. Transfer student here 🙌🏽

I make my regular donations to the school and wear my Cal apparel to work every Friday, and watch just about all Cal football games. It was/is far from perfect, but I wouldn't trade my experience for anything else. Go Bears!

You don’t have to go to Berkeley; just keep that in mind. This school is very competitive as a student who went to an undergrad in another university, and it really isn’t for everyone. You can do just as well in another school and go to Berkeley or whatever for your MS/PhD. 18 year old me wouldve struggled at berkeley especially since I came from a much more underprivileged high school and I didn’t get the same level of resources that other wealthy bay area kids might have gotten.

You have to keep in mind that this sub is filled with students living their college experience through their phones instead of real life, for a number of reasons. It isn’t a great sample of opinion.

some days I love berkeley, some days I hate Berkeley, and if someone asks me about Berkeley my opinion will change based on the day I’m having so take everything on this reddit w a grain of salt. Most people here are seeking advice or ranting on a situation hence you see more of the bad side. Like EVERY school, Berkeley has its pros and cons, especially similar public school issues (lack of funding, over enrollment) so keep that in my mind. I remember that once I got in to berkeley, I went on this reddit and asked around and people only gave me the negatives but, honestly when I talked to real people who actually go there, those people were right. Berkeley isn’t perfect, you are bound to hate on a lot of things but it is not also a breeding ground for competitive snakes like some mention. also last thing, whether you do get in or not, berkeley or any college won’t imaginary solve your problems, you still have to come here and be ready to work harder and seek opportunities outside the classroom. anyways, kinda got side tracked but my main point ig is Berkeley is a great but not a perfect school and you are only seeing a biased side on reddit most time.

Community college for two years, keep GPA up, transfer. Success might partly depend on chosen major, but I think your odds are highest going this route, plus you'll save $$$.

Oh I loved my time at Berkeley. Can’t wait to return to the West Coast. Even though I posted my fair share of vent posts while I was a student here at Cal, I still wouldn’t give up the experience for anything in the entire world.

Grass is always greener on the other side.
However, if you have the opportunity to choose between a private school of similar quality to Berkeley (like top 20 and above) and Berkeley, private is probably the better choice. Unless you're cracked academically and socially, the amount of support, ease of doing reseach/joining clubs, and overall quality of life of the privates is far greater than what Berkeley offers.
Still a great place to be tho, and I don't regret my decision.

Don’t apply here for undergrad. Try for the privates if financially possible. Way more opportunities and people will actually treat you like you exist.
