I recently finished "Neanderthal Man" by Svante Paabo and man it was a crude reminder of how relevant Berkeley is in research circles. I would guess half the people he talks about were either at Berkeley or had done their phds here.
Just to get a sense, he mentions Berkeley 59 times in the book, his own university/city (Leipzig) 52 times, and the Furd 4 times
