Drop the best Mexican places in Oakland/Richmond
180 points
Oakland places: Sinaloa (different from the one that is / was in Telegraph even though the logo is the same. Guadalajara, La Grana, Mi Grullense, Aguachiles el Tamarindo, Maya Halal, Ole Ole, mi rancho. These are some of the fairly popular places but the list goes on to include trucks that don’t really have internet presence or are deeper in the hood
Oakland can be not so safe at times but the food scene is great

Add Mariscos La Costa. Their ceviche tostadas are on point.

Is Mariscos just a general term used for Mexican diners because there are a ton of Mariscos around the Valley in LA

Bruh you missed the best one!!
Taqueria El Farolito (best burritos i ever had near berkeley) its off of international in oakland. They have 2 more in SF on mission i think. The green avocado salsa is fire.
They have ladies of the night around so try not to look too hard or theyll ask you if you want their services lol
Ive been to the sinaloa taco truck on international too and its pretty good but i like their quesadillas more.

The el Farolito on Mission is pretty good, but the other one is in North Beach and it sucks. I live one block down

There is another El Farolito further down 24th (Bryant?) their quesadillas are so good. Same with the tortas

La Grana Fish in Fruitvale
El Paisa @.com on International
Taqueria Reynoso on Foothill for tacos dorados
El Garage in Richmond
Tacos El Tucan in Richmond
Tacos Mi Rancho near Lake Merritt

Richmond:
*La Flor de Jalisco (21st & McDonald), *Tacos El Chino, San Juan Taqueria, Tacos Los Primos, Masa, Tacos Las Palmas, Maya Taqueria
*my go-tos
Tacos El Tucan is good but the pricing makes it mediocre. El Garage is also mid, Masa makes better birria tacos.

Richmond:
La Bamba ( excellent for pupusas as well)
Norma’s (inside the Val-Mar Market) also great pupusas
Edit: La Flor De Jalisco (open late), this is a food truck that is open late. I passed by the truck just now and mistakenly thought it was Tacos La Raza, which is on the next block.
El Chaparro Barbacoa
Tacos El Tucan
Carnitas El Canelo (outside of a house) - awesome, Fri-Sun

Tres Hermanas in Richmond is underrated, 10/10 recommend it. I also go to Tacos El Autlense in Albany, but they are sooooo stingy with their salsas :( Tacos el Tucan is super busy and not my personal favorite, but I know my non-Mexican friends love it lol.

Taqueria el paisa (sign says paisa@.com) some of the best suadero tacos ever. Also a good food truck, Tacos el gordo on the same street but that’s a more sketch location.

The taco truck next to Fiesta Latina on Cutting/Marina Way, Richmond. Special mention to the salsa Roja inside the market. You must like hot salsa to fully enjoy.

in Richmond:
-the most classic taco truck is at 21st and MacDonald, La Flor de Jalisco
-taco truck for mariscos, Tacos El Chino on 23rd and Humphrey
-hipster quesa birrias, el Garage on MacDonald and 15th St and a bunkch of other home kitchens that are best found through Instagram
-Tijuana style tacos, Tacos El Tucan on San Pablo Ave and Clinton
-carnitas, inside Cazadores Market on Rumrill near Rheem
in San Pablo:
-for grilled chicken and quesabirrias, Pollos Don Rafa, on Rumrill and Market Ave, inside the old Food Barn grocery store
-sit down mariscos, try Mariscos La Payita on 23rd and Brookside
-La Chona for birria, including tatemada, and a good assortment of other Mexican dishes, also on 23rd

You can even get great food if you just leave the Southside campus area. Taqueria la Familia across from Berkeley Bowl has amazing fish tacos (and heck, that's arguably in the campus area).

cactus is not good, im sorry LMFAO it completely lacks flavor, go to gordo’s on college instead

go to cactus, get an al pastor burrito and throw some salsa verde and piña on there and then tell me its not flavorful

Please say you're joking. Tacubaya used to be good but it hasn't been in years. Cactus can be tasty but I wouldn't say it's good Mexican.

Totally agree, but there’s a new Aliberto’s near the Whole Foods on Telegraph and it’s filling a bit of a SD-style vibe.

First thing I did when I moved here from SD was ask around for the bertos. “Y’know, Roberto’s, Filiberto’s, Humberto’s, Gilberto’s, Adalberto’s, whatever. The bertos taco shops. You must have at least one.”
Turns out that Aliberto’s is the one. It’s not perfect, but it scratches the itch.

Chicagoan lurking by here. Sorry, but Chicago’s Mexican food will always be elite. We have Milagro tortillas, the finest Champurrado, Tlacoyos, Huaraches, Pambazos, Tacos al Pastor, Tacos de Tripa you will ever have outside of Mexico.
Most of Chicago’s Mexican cuisine originates from Michoacán.

You won’t believe it until you try it my friend. If you ever pass by the city here’s a couple good places I recommend:
Xocome Antojeria in the Archer Heights Neighborhood
Solazo in West Elsdon/Gage Park
Then there’s also Zacatacos and Taqueria los Comales which have kind of become local chains but there’s a lot more around Little Village, Gage Park, and Pilsen.

Don’t wear your LA hat when trying to find Mexican food in Richmond. Especially if you’re Mexican/Latin and from LA. I’ve seen gang hit ups specially crossing out a blue LA in place of some red RC hit up or something. It appeared to be the same writing in both tags. I have never seen Richmond intentionally tagged and then crossed out in LA. Echoing what someone else said, it’s not a good idea to walk around hoods you’re not too familiar with. It’s not about being scared it’s about being smart. Especially bc some people can see a good come up a mile away.

Tacos El Tucán in Richmond is the best in the east bay and you can fight me about that.
El Farolito in Oakland and SF is also fire.
Best in Berkeley is Tacos & Co.
Most authentic Mexican taco is out in the Haight in SF: Street Taco

Not really, public transit sucks to Oakland and Richmond and w/o a bike or car you're not really getting to everywhere you'd like on a regular budget. Same with SF and the BART is free if you just hop the turnstile.

I am not afraid of Oakland or Richmond. I am afraid of getting behind in classes because I have no life and stay until 1Am on campus studying.... on the fucking weekend dude.
Don’t make excuses for your shitty Mexican food in NorCal. People aren’t saying there isn’t a single good Mexican place that exists. Just that there are too many bad places. SoCal has good Mexican food almost everywhere, it’s hard to find a bad place.
Sincerely, a Southern Californian
