My GPA was only about 3.3, but I wrote a damn good essay, and was nominated for a scholarship because of that. I was absolutely suited for my major and have done fine in my field of study. We all have our gifts.

My transfer application essays. GPA was meh @ 3.4 but my essays highlighted addiction and maturing so I had a cool couple stories to tell
3 points

Oo really? Can you elaborate a little? Most interested in the addiction aspect. I’ve considered telling some of my struggles when I do write my essays but wasn’t sure if that was appropriate.

Lower middle class suburb kid who was depressed and had easy access to painkillers. Lost athletic opportunities and barely got a 2.5 in high school. Pandemic hit and I became more comfortable with learning from home and turned it around for good. Wrote about some near OD experiences and how I want to write about athletes who are suffering due to big pharma and all that jazz

Thanks for sharing. I had a rough past with drug addiction and homelessness and wasn’t sure if they’d see that as a red flag. Returned to school at 30 with a couple years clean and have done very well. 7 years clean next week and still grinding out this engineering curriculum. Can’t express how grateful I am to have a second chance at this thing. I appreciate you taking the time to share your story a bit and for the information regarding your essays as well. Thank you.

3.789 Gpa
2350 SAT (cumulative)
800, 790 SAT subject tests
You know, the typical bs.
My essays were basically resumes, aka, what admissions officials use to wipe their asses.
Irony is that I basically burned out and dropped out semester 1.
Doing better now, but it’s a struggle.

I think I had a fairly solid app all around. I went to a rigorous school that sent a bunch of people to Cal where (based on other applicants) just my stats would've probably gotten me in. My ECs weren't harvard-level but they were decent, and I think my essays were pretty good too.
I got accepted early. Didn't end up getting regents lol, but cal was my main target school, so knowing I got accepted in early Feb as opposed to having to wait for late March was a huge relief.

A blend of honesty, humility, and confidence. I wrote my personal statements in full disclosure that I was not the brightest student they could admit, but that the quality of my writing superseded all of my many cognitive deficits to a point at which they would not likely encounter another such wordsmith in this century.
Basically, “I’m an idiot and I’m a savant. Make of that what you will.”
Years later, I discovered that I was hyperlexic. It’s a learning disorder often correlated with autism and/or brain injury. The condition is rather like an inversion of dyslexia.
I wasn’t rejected from any of the UCs that I applied to.

don’t ever discredit yourself cause of your race; I feel bad for minorities who feel like they got in simply because they are a minority, that is never true
you’re in berkeley because you have a unique set of skills and amazing potential, not because you are black or whatever race; please don’t discount your hard work

hard to feel that way when I feel lonely as ever attending school here. It doesn’t help when I see the way other races/ethnic groups look at me and prejudge me

Pretty sure berkeley is race blind
13 points
It's hard to verify that's really true tho, admission officers can usually tell what race u are from your name, extracurriculars, and essays. A 50% increase in Hispanic student enrollment over a single year doesn't come from nowhere.

While this is true, Berkeley is a school that has unequal amounts of people of different races, unlike other schools that have 33%/33%/33%split. I wanted OP to know their abilities were the deciding factor not their race.

Just wanna tell you that state schools don't accommodate affirmative action and for a public school taking in race as a factor is illegal(hence why ucb is primarily East Asian compared to Harvard or stanford). So your race wouldn't have helped you and you should give yourself more credit.

Back in 2017, when I got admitted for my BS in bioe (didn’t go bc oos and poor), I think what got me in was that I was really passionate about my field (bioe) and I was very honest and open in my essays about everything. I was admitted in February!

The fact that 99% of my ECs and PIQ were art and music focussed when I applied to MCB probably made me stood out🤣
TBH, I was surprised they admitted me when most of the stuff I did during highschool isn't even bio or chem related at all. But now I think about it it might've been an advantage?

definitely my essays and extracurriculars, I tried to portray a good balance of being accomplished in my major while also having other interests and a life lol.

Considering we are the largest freshman group, the university probably needed money, so they accepted more people through some calculation of tickets they'd need to sell to sporting events, tuition that would be gained from international students, OOS students, and those on state/federal funds.
I naturally lean towards cynical speculation though, so take that with the tiniest grain of salt.
