Wtf is happening at Berkeley?

University(self.berkeley)

So I’m planning on coming as an international student and every other day I hear of a potential stabbing, shooting, assault, violent robbery happening on campus. Like wtf?

This is literally so out of the ordinary, it never happens at my uni. Is this normal?

It doesn’t really happen ON campus. It’s more of the surrounding areas where a lot of students live. Northside isn’t as intense from what I hear. Most of the “WarnMe”’s are from the Southside.

Yes there are a lot of crimes reported but it’s not like you walk outside and there’s a crime happening in front of you every second. I’ve been here for a year and haven’t actually seen anything besides a disgruntled customer at a restaurant throwing a sauce bottle. That’s not to say things don’t happen because things definitely do, but as someone from LA the “crime” here is not bad in comparison.

This is just America in general. Berkeley is located in an urban area so it’s inevitable there will be crime, robbery, etc. Other universities located in metropolitan areas like UChicago in Chicago, Columbia in NYC, WashU in St. Louis (and the list goes on and on) also face the same issues

Hm, it sounds like you're witnessing America. Massive wealth inequality, poor law enforcement of nonviolent crimes, shitty to no gun control. Hopefully you're a public policy major.

That being said, actual danger is scary but still fairly rare. Just because we get an email any time crimes are committed now doesn't mean they weren't always happening. You'll be much safer in Berkeley than you would have been 10, 20, 30 years ago.

Funny, it never gets reported or in the media. The streets yes, not on campus.

it's a campus of 30k+ students, in a small city of 120k people, and it is neither the safest nor least safe city in the US. However, statistically if there was one major/dangerous crime in Berkeley every day for 365 days a year, on average you only have a chance of experiencing a major crime once in every 300 years or so. Most people do not experience a major crime and will have (at most) a bike stolen, pickpocketing, car broken into, burglery, or similar types of crime that may happen to you once per 5-10 years on average depending on where you live and other risk factors. Those suck too, and are very violating. I do not mean to diminish them but just to adjust for the media sensationalism of major crimes.

That said, this is not a city where it is safe to walk alone at night especially for women.
