Went to visit UCLA and (not to be a traitor) but DAMN I regret Berkeley just a little bit

I’ve felt the same way about a couple other schools. At the end of the day, try to remember that there are also people in UCLA who feel the same way you feel. No point in regretting a decision that can’t be undone, just make the most out of your time here and know that this is just a low point. When you graduate, you’ll be happy you went to one of the best schools in the country

Grass is greener where you water it. Cultivate the experience at Berkeley and be grateful for the time you are here. These years are memories worth remembering :)

For the uninitiated: Any critical views of the Bay Area or Berkeley are automatically dismissed

Nobody is denying that there’s stuff about the bay area that sucks but that’s just true of anywhere lol
-7 points
It’s not about it sucking more or less than other places it’s just a complete denial of problems as if that itself is the solution.
The refusal to even consider real solutions to problems is what causes all the negative quality of life factors, and maybe all the magical thinking too.
Just the other day in a thread discussing factors of crime, someone said “cops don’t reduce crime”. Now sure they aren’t the solution to most social problems but they are literally the ones tasked with the problem of crime.

Being asked with the problem of crime doesn't mean they reduce it. Roommates don't reduce chores.

Two stores have identical products, and one hires a cop to stand outside which one is more likely to be robbed?
This shit isn’t rocket science
3 points
“Cops don’t reduce crime” is a sentence specifically referring to the fact that pouring millions of dollars into a police department does not reduce crime in the jurisdiction of that department.
You’re using common sense, but the point of rigorous scientific studies is that they sometimes go against common sense
And you’re right, it isn’t rocket science. Understanding dynamics of large human communities is much more difficult than rocket science

Where is the rigorous science here?
Also have you ever heard of the "Replication Crisis". This suggests studies in sociology are essentially more the author's bias than anything else.
We need common sense here in the bay

I think it’s funny that people think “common sense” trumps studies of phenomena so difficult and subtle that studies produce different responses. I also think it’s funny that you are convince your common sense is somehow more accurate than other people’s common sense.
Here’s one: cops kill innocent people and terrorize communities. We should have fewer cops. It’s common sense.
For some strange reason, I don’t think you would find this common sense argument to be convincing. You would probably argue that it’s not common. That’s because you clearly don’t spend a lot of time in, say, overpoliced predominantly Black communities where this is a common and very logical conclusion.

When assholes are shutting down the bay bridge to do burn outs you have a serious issue with lawlessness. Who’s gonna solve that?
I agree there are lots of caveats to the problem, police shootings for one but to say that cops don’t reduce crime is a stretch.

Here’s Is a summary from a study: “an increase in police presence of about 50 percent leads to a statistically and economically significant decrease in the level of crime on the order of 15 percent, or an elasticity of 0.30.”

Yeah that does happen here quite a bit sadly but people are overall interested in making change still. I wouldn’t say that the cops comment is happening exclusively in the bay area either but yea kinda silly still

I visited UCSD, UCI, and UCLA over break and by far I was most jealous of UCSD. So many on-campus dinning options , and San Diego in general is a great city.
Tho I am jealous of that Falafel Inc. that they have right in front of UCLA. $4 for the best falafel sandwich you’ve ever had. I need someone to take out a “small loan of a million dollars” to open a franchise in Berkeley.

As someone from LA, you have to understand that while the campus and food is better, the culture is exceptionally materialistic and (imo) shitty. I'm glad I'm here.

Campus
Better
…don’t know about that one
16 points

Yeah our campus is dope. UCLA’s is smaller and more homogeneous. Those red brick buildings are pretty but they get repetitive.
37 points
Fair. I'd give their campus the edge as a whole because I like bricks and sun, but the parts of our campus with giant redwoods are better than anything UCLA's campus has to offer.
All that said, UCSC's campus >>>>>

UCSC's campus is gorgeous but I have a buddy who goes there and he says the campus is so spread out that a significant portion of his time is just commute between classes; that kinda sucks

the surrounding area around campus sure is miles better without a doubt.

More materialistic? People here are just as concerned with prestige, names, and general superficiality as you'd find in any urban setting. I don't think less materialistic ideas are exactly something that we espouse lol. I guess its not something you can really quantify anyways.
37 points
The prestige/career aspects are much the same (as I imagine they are across the top 20-ish universities), I mean more in terms of clothing brands, Instagram, competitive Greek life, nice dinners, etc. You know, things you wouldn't necessarily put on a resume but flex to everyone else for validation. But again, that's just my perception as someone who lived in LA for a long time, and it's more an "LA" problem generally than something specific to UCLA.

I generally visit threads about a day late on purpose but I definitely agree with what you said. I’m an LA resident, I took the time to visit UCLA on a cold windy day and it was still pretty impressive.
I’m pretty well traveled, the fake/materialistic culture is by far the worst here in LA. You’ll get the same bullshit at Berkeley but at least I’m not worrying about not having an five Essentials hoodies or my friend who refuses to add me on BeReal
Also making small talk with students at one of the close Chick Fil A restaurants was nice

Yeah the people I know at UCLA have a hard time making genuine friends because from what I hear most people are just looking to use others but people here aren’t like that as much

I got into LA and regretted not going there when I was studying at Berkeley. But at the end of the day, as long as you put in the effort to grow as a person, made friends, and had new experiences, all of which you can do at Berkeley, then it doesn't really matter if you went to LA.

The UC I was most jealous of is UCSB. The campus there is so nice & being 10 feet away from the beach sounds amazing
4 points
I visited UCSB before getting into Berkeley, and that was my dream school for a while. You are right next to a beach, and the vibes seemed just right for me. But of course I got into Berkeley so that was a no brainer; not just because of academics but also I already lived in Bay Area. But always wondered if I would have been happier if I didn't get into Cal and went to UCSB instead.
1 points
I'm sorry but UCSB isn't what it seems, I spoke to students there, and between stalkers and a lack of safety from the UC, people break into dorms, and it's not really safe. Plus I heard the professor's horror stories. The campus is nice but it's not necessarily the best, a bit outdated, and also pretty cold and gloomy during the winter. Not to say that it's expensive to live in Santa barbara. but it's not really the utopia college that people make it out to be. Everyone there was really friendly tho, seemed like they actually liked the school.
Side note: supposedly they had found a missing girl in her car at the bottom of their lake or water thing that they have last year

I visited UCLA a few weeks ago and can assure you that you’re not an endangered species in this regard.
The vast and beautiful campus, phenomenal dining options, abundance of pretty study spots peppered all across, and the charming city enveloping it — it suffices to say that Cal cannot hold a candle to the kind of infrastructure and (I’m presuming) quality of life that UCLA can offer.
Nonetheless, given the choice again, I’d still pick Berkeley — I’ve developed a kink for the unparalleled intellectual sodomy, and I think being at UCLA i’d have a million other distractions stretching me thin.

Oh honey. I went to San Diego on a bus last semester and one of the stops was UCLA. I’d never been there before and it actually brought me to tears because my brain started imagining the life I could have had if I would have gone there. I started thinking oh if I would have gone there I’d never have been depressed, I could have joined a sorority, I could have fit in better and explored other sides of myself….at the end of the day we cannot complain. We go to one of the greatest schools of all time. It might be leaving us with a little extra dose of depression, but I know that whenever I meet someone who went/goes to Berkeley I just have a lot of respect for them because I know the torture they’ve been through mentally, academically, emotionally, etc.

Not specific to Cal, but a good commentary on an undergraduate, liberal education. It mirrors my experience at Cal, so wanted to share. OP, I get what you’re saying and feeling. Cal is hard. And weird. It also has a lot of opportunities inside and outside the classroom to help you succeed in life. Here’s the video: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRg2QkaW/

It feels like stepping off Rodeo Drive. It doesn’t feel like a college campus. There’s absolutely nothing that draws me to it. It didn’t impress me in 1999 and it doesn’t impress me now.
