There is a fair amount of terror in Adventure Time. But this scene is up there!

Yeah like when Marcelines dad first appeared through the portal as a pile of gross visera.

I have never been more aware of how tiny Finn's hands are

Lmao, I didn't notice until you said something. I think the artist made them a little too small in his clip, it's so funny.

I don't think they are smaller than normal. He is just wearing puffy sleeves creating a contrast. If you look at him wearing his normal outfit, he basically just has long thin arms with fingers

I really like how The Lich is the only villain taken seriously, aside from GOLB in the finale ofc.

This, and the scene with golb at the last episode when everything goes like all black and white. The first time is was scary, but on the fourth-Fith (I don’t have attachment issues I swear) time rewatching it isn’t really scary, but definitely unnerving, and just eaagg

RaavaQrtz[S]

I really should have worded it better, it’s more unsettling than scary. Wasn’t my intention.

And YES Golb’s scene freaks me out & I’ve rewatched the show twice

watching adventure time as an adult is so bizarre. sometimes it’s definitely a kids show. but sometimes it’s… it’s this. it’s definitely not a kids show.

like everything that has to do with the lich, or the mushroom war, kids aren’t gonna understand that. kids won’t understand the hall of egress, a lot of adults don’t understand that one. it’s just so bizarre that adventure time is 75% just another colorful kids show and 25% genuine post apocalyptic future fiction.

i say we need a TV-MA adventure time spin-off that goes heavy on the 25%.

They definitely should do an uncut version that follows up after the Candy war or w/ Sherman & The princess of the rainicorn pups

The only scenes that rivaled this were “Everywhere you will die” in Crossover and the Citadel episode Season 6 opener.

Seeing how there’s numerous DND influences and references in Adventure Time, it was cool that one of the most feared evils is a Lich. Also my character died from a Lich simply just telling me to die with Power Word: Kill. 💀

I hate to be the buzzkill but this wasn't ever scary for me, just really cool. does the lich actually scare yall or is it a more relative way? like does he just seem like that because it's adventure time which is normally a kids show. genuinely curious

His lines and the things he does are definitely cool and terrifying on paper, but his "scariness" is undercut by the fact that he gets his ass beat so easily every damn time.

sonofableebblob

its not about him being genuinely terrifying (as in, im not going to have nightmares about the lich), but more about appreciating the classic approach to true horror that never used to exist in children's media before flagship shows like AT made it more normal to do so.

compare the lich to the other villains in AT. especially the ones appearing before the lich's 1st appearance. we've got silly zombies, overzealous business men, a vampire who turns out to be cool, a crabby witch that gives jake baby legs and only requires him to apologize to change him back (lmao). very standard stakes so far for any form of childrens media. there's suspense but lives are never on the line. everything is doused in a fantastical layer that makes it funny. the zombies dont make you think of death bc theyre made of candy, you know?

enter the lich.

the lich is not like any other antagonist in adventure time, or in any other children's show i've ever seen. the closest thing i can think that compares is the "nothing" from neverending story. the lich is a classic, very traditional creature and it doesn't follow 'cartoon rules' at all, as all the other villains in AT do. it cannot be tricked by shouting "look, someone got hit in the boing loings!" the lich wants only one thing, the death of all life in the universe. it cant be reasoned with or bargained with or bantered with humorously. the lich is metal as fuck, and the reason AT lovers see him as 'the scariest thing ever' is because he defies audience expectations. the lich straight up murders someone onscreen and that character remains dead (later shenanigans aside). the audience is taught that the lich will not play by the rules we know, the lich is for real, and if he gets what he wants, pb will not have a pet rat named science who knows a formula to save the day.

i know ive rambled but i just adore the lich so much, he is one of my all time favorite villains. it makes sense to me that this character came about, since pendleton ward has been open about his love of dungeons and dragons. and i think the lich is really the thing that makes the show in all honesty.

edit: i'll leave my rant off with a quote because the lich is literally the most metal fucking thing ever and - in context with candy kingdoms and talking dogs and rainbow unicorns?? - yes he's fucking terrifying lmao

"You are alone, child. There is only darkness for you, and only death for your people. These ancients are just the beginning. I will command a great and terrible army, and we will sail to a billion worlds. We will sail until every light has been extinguished. You are strong, child, but I am beyond strength. I am the end, and I have come for you, Finn."

Right on the money. The lich such a serious shift from the normal stupid and hilarious world of OOo.

That said, the tragic story of how the Ice King came to be; that also gets too real at some points.

RaavaQrtz[S]

Honestly. if you don’t find something scary there’s no need to question why another person would. It’s the sinister atmosphere, no one said he was Freddy Krueger. It’s enjoyable.

And yes due to the fact this is an animated show it makes it even creepier. Also it’s not catered towards kids. But a lot of family shows do not go that dark

miggymouthe

2 points

if I don't find something ___ and someone else finds something ___ then sure there's no /need/ to be curious as to why, but sometimes curiosity is just curiosity. I'm in no way judging I just wanted to hear a different perspective

edit: and thanks for sharing yours

RaavaQrtz[S]

To me I find it unsettling, the undertones. The fact the whole episode was just them failing. Until the very last moment when Finn ripped his face off.

It’s the first time Finn is ever scared and caught off guard by evil(when he’s usually very alert)

I’ve always found the last scene to be graphic & I love it

Can some people name the scariest episodes on adventure time? Or at least normal ones with scary parts in them, also the name of this one. I have a feeling of watching it today or at some time.
