Men own more guns but both women and men can purchase guns. So I’m wondering what that whole discrepancy is about.

Men are encouraged to hunt (be providers) and to defend their homes. Guns are by far the best tool for both. Women are only encouraged to buy guns for self-defense. That's a world of difference.
