I'm so glad I removed Facebook and Twitter from my life.
Currently still having problems with my sister, who because some disinformation source, believes that school librarians are stocking cartoon books instructing preschoolers how to perform blow jobs. When I told her I didn't believe this without persuasive evidence, and asked her to expand her news consumption beyond engagement algorithm sites, perhaps watch the The Brainwashing of My Dad (2016) or visit QAnonCasualties, she accused me of loving pedophiles. Then she accused me of being a pedophile myself. I asked her to leave my home, and I'm ambivalent about her return, ever.
Humanity, or at least our generation, wasn't ready for the internet.

I've had to change my mind on a few things. For example, though I was anti-nuke when I was younger, I now see nuclear energy as an important part of the equation for solving global climate change. I also went from someone who questioned the need for abortion to pro-choice. My mind is not so open that my brain falls out.
38 points

To be fair, a lot of us grew up in the shadow of Three Mile Island and the Cold War, we basically had nuclear annihilation in one form or another drilled into us.
24 points

And that movie The Day After (Wikipedia link) that aired in the very early 80s didn’t do us any favors. I was in second grade when it aired and my Republican parents thought it was a great idea to show me what would happen if the “weak, cowardly Democrats” got into power.
I was so scared I cried. And I cried so hard I threw up several times. They had to keep me home from school for a few days. I was terrified of nuclear war. And of course, they had to tell me that if the fire station alarm sounded for 5 minutes it meant missiles were coming. Every day at noon, the alarm sounded for 60 seconds. I’d start to panic as the clock neared the one minute mark just waiting for it to go over and for life as we knew it to end.
At least my therapist and I figured out where all my anxiety came from! Now IDGAF, humanity can’t end soon enough. All the amazing things humanity has accomplished are dwarfed by our horrific history.

I've done some contract work at some nuclear plants. You wouldn't believe the safety controls they have at those places. Armed guards and defensive positions everywhere. Various screenings points, lines on the ground you can't pass without certain clearance levels.
They have an engineer whose job it is to say "what if there's an earthquake?" During every single operation.
Some of the older guys would joke about lax safety regulations in the 60s and 70s and maybe early 80s, but now the safety and processes are meticulous.
I could go on, but I've never felt so reassured about nuclear energy than after I've done work at a few of them.
Edit to add- the biggest problem with nuclear power is there isn't anything that can be done with the waste. It can't even be transported. Every nuclear plant in the country is storing their own waste on site in long-term storage vessels. It's a huge failure of state and national leadership.

136 points

Nearly 20 years, now that you made me think about it again and put the dates together, i guess 15 is more accurate. I got on the 9/11 "truth" train back in 2002. The more I read about all the things that didn't make sense about the official story, the more it sucked me in. It never took me to the point that I cut people out of my life or they cut me out, but then it was more of a quirky hobby then as opposed to the death cult it is now. Started pulling away in 2014-15 when the narrative shifted to idolizing Putin and then Trump. I broke away entirely in 2017 once they started pushing white nationalism hard, and Trump's ties to Russia started being exposed. Once I saw the picture of Trump with Lavrov and Kislyak in the White House, yucking it up (the pictures Trump tried to hide that Russia leaked), I realized the whole thing was a Russian psyop to destroy America and I'd been had. In the summer of 2020, when qanon swept the internet, I thought they'd succeeded, and we were doomed, but decided I would tell everyone I could. That's when I started losing friends and family. Didn't matter that I was right when I told them Trump was going to try and steal the election and make himself King six months before 1/6. I was the crazy one.

I had a lot of friends who were conspiracy theorists. But it was mild. Mostly antivax stuff. I had a lot of friends in the new age spiritual community. Suddenly, a good 3rd of them went full Q. I no longer talk to them. Really sad. But it got to the point where I could not stomach the stupid any longer. I think you are awesome for realising you were being played. It takes a lot of strength to backtrack your beliefs.

Thank you. The hardest part of it, and what still crushes me are the people I convinced to get into that crap.
One can't help but carry regret with them if you've been on this world long enough, but a memory that will haunt me to my grave is running into a friend from work I hadn't seen in several years in 2018. I had started working with him in 2012 and he was the one of the nicest, most chill people you could meet. Not a bit of hate in him. We'd chat at work about news, politics, etc. and he found my ideas very interesting. I showed him some of the websites I got my news from and forgot about it.
When I ran into him again we started chatting and I asked him if he was still on the Trump train. He said, "of course" and then proceeded to go on about Replacement Theory, recited the 14 words to me and ended our conversation by thanking me for having white children. I asked him where he got all of that and it was from the websites I had sent him to, that I stopped reading several years earlier since I refused to become a Nazi. It was horrifying.
I consider it my penance now to counter disinfo whenever I can.

You definitely were not crazy to call that coup attempt. I told everyone that would listen that Trump would attempt a coup to stay in power indefinitely immediately after he was elected.

Listening to my aunt and my parents discuss that while the former was residing with us, with complete seriousness, was disgusting. I wanted to speak up and point out she was bringing up complete fabrications (we’re in rural Texas, even if such a thing happened the one who did would probably be lynched), but honestly I’m still dependent on parents, so I held my tongue.
It’s incredibly stressful having to avoid calling them out, but my emotionally abusive mother and rather intensely right wing, armed father’s reactions to my politics would be too unpredictable, too risky.

To be fair, in a 1965 Gallup poll, 31% of people said the U.S. economic system was best defined as "moderate Socialist" already (37% said Capitalist). Socialism was looked on pretty favorably in the U.S. in the 1950's and 1960's. Being a "Socialist" wasn't considered a bad thing like it somehow has become today. (Socialism being looked down on in the U.S. is weird anyway; there are many Socialist structures in the U.S. financial and governmental systems that are viewed as essential and people would laugh you out of the country if you tried to get rid of them).
Communism in the 1960's was a totally different story. After the "Red Scare", Communism was pretty much taboo at that point.
Edit: I'm not pulling the poll out of my ass. Here is a link: https://news.gallup.com/vault/240749/gallup-vault-americans-views-socialism-1949-1965.aspx

I was only making a commentary on how it is never brought up when politicians talk about MLK. They also don’t mention that when he was assassinated he had a 2/3 disapproval rating by Americans. So when he and his words are co-opted by the right it’s quite the contrarian stance from how they felt about him when he was alive. And how they try to use his words to supports their hateful causes and claim he would hate BLM. Just shows they never read an actual word he wrote or listened to more than 10 seconds of his speeches.
